More winter choices? While intended for winter and cold weather mountaineering, The Batura really looks like something a '80's rock star or Star War's Jedi Master might latch onto. Last/fit is supposed to be the same as the Trango series. Felt bigger than my Trangos. A bit bigger internally than the Spantik. I went down a 1/2 size from a 46 to a 45.5 in the Batura. Still had plenty of room to add a better insole. The outer volume is way down from its big brother the Spantik as is the sole outline. The Batura is more easily compared to the Nepal top. Think of the Batura as a Fabric version of the Nepal top with a fixed Supergaitor. The actual inner boot is made of cordura like material and is flexible in every direction. More so than the Nepal more like the recent Trango Extremes. The Batura *might* well be a bit warmer than the Nepals, but it is also going to allow better circulation just by being so flexible in the ankle. They will stay drier than the Nepals which will help. Sole is rigid with a slight rocker as expected. Zipper and attached gaitor are a bit funky. Gaiter is a bit tight getting to the lock lace on the ankle hinge which you'll need to do. Bottom lace loops are all nylon fabric. Past the lock lace at the ankle there are two metal speed laces. To get in and out of the boot you have to unlock the ankle and then thread in some slack. Laces aren't intended to be removed from the last two speed laces. It is annoying. Zipper? Well it is a zipper on a mountain boot, bring the duct tape, enough said. In my size they were a full pound lighter than the Spantik about the same as a Trango a bit lighter than the Nepals. Certainly not as warm as the Spantik on a cold day in the Rockies, but then I didn't get cold feet in either boot. But the lower temps were felt in the Batura, just not uncomfortable on short term adventures. A few days out and I'd want the insurance of a warmer boot. I've owned a pair of almost every model of Sportive alpine boots. Some styles have been better than others. Sportiva is always innovative. Just wish they would be a little more practical in the execution. Light, bright cosmetics and they climb well if you don't need any ankle support. Still undecided is if this is Sportiva's best high Mtn alpine boot or just another disposable specialist tool. You'd think that would be clearer at the asking price.

Sportiva promised a lot and delivered more than expected! After a month of use here is a follow up report on my Batura’s. The boot meets and exceeds its physical statement. Easier to use the lock lace and lace than first expected. The flexible ankle makes easy approaches so much more pleasurable than say, a Nepal Evo. Snug them down using the lock lace and you gain 95% of the support of the Nepal Evo and even better flexibility. In my size 45s I really like this boot on waterfall ice and mixed. Lacing system allows me to target warmth, flexibility or support depending on what I am doing for the moment. And it is easy enough to adjust that performance with the lace system if required. It is a warm boot but the limitation of being a single boot makes drying them out after a really wet day problematic. Everything I owned took several days to dry out after one exceptionally wet day on the ice locally. The Batura did get wet inside but was the first piece of gear that was usable again. In short term, (2 or 3 days max) and in cold, dry conditions I doubt it would be an issue worth noting. Long term stints out would be an issue. Most importantly for me is the Batura climbs steep ice very well. They are warmer than any single boot I am aware of without using a super gaiter. The stubby gaiter is actually useful! I just tuck my pants into the gaiter snug them tight and off we go. The gaiter works great breaking trail in this year's bottomless cascade cement. From that I'd say the gaiter is to go anywhere. It is a specialist boot. I still wonder about durability on the gaiter. But so far it is a darn good boot for my own needs and best of all it fits well and is comfortable. For my feet, more comfortable than any other model of Sportiva alpine boots. I had just about given up on comfort with a Sportiva last. Sportiva says the Batura is built on a Nepal last. I have both in a 45 and the Batura fit is at least a half size bigger with more room in the toe box than the current Nepal Evo. With narrow heels and a big foot the Batura is my best fit to date in a Sportiva mnt boot.

Batura, good low volume winter boot - I tried on at least 10 pairs of boots looking for something that would fit a low volume foot that still needs a good sized toe box. This was the only boot that could do both. I have to wear custom insoles to help with my flat feet, and they fit in these boots as well. First impressions: they stay warm when walking in snow all day, my friend was able to get water in his pair when stepping through an ankle plus high puddle of water... so the zipper on the gaiter can definitely let water in, I found the gaiter held out snow well all day, the foam layers inside need a little break in time right at the front of the top of the ankle, but still very comfortable for a rigid boot.

great winter boot

Rating:*****
great fitting boot, little extra room in the toes but the rest of the boot is a fairly technical fit. perrty warm, ive got bad circ. but i can use these down to 0 give or take a few degrees. climbs hard ice as good as any boot ive used and rock as good as any single boot. comfy for a full shank boot to hike in, did a 18 mile aproch to one climb no blisters. in the end id say... best ice climbing boot on the market, good alpine rock boot, good alpine big wall boot. only bad part is for multi-day climbs use a vb sock, the boot soaks up sweat and insilation is degraded, not really a problem if its going to be 15 degrees or above

"Another step forward for Sportiva"

Rating:*****
A lot of hype behind this boot. Nice that Sportiva generally delivers. The Batura is warm, climbs WI5 just fine even in the bigger sizes 46 and is easy on your feet for the walk in. Not my first choice for multiday outings in really cold weather but it will do anything a decent single boot and supergaiter will and may be even a bit more. The shorty gaiter really does work well with a pair of Schoeller pants tucked into them. Zip works just fine and seems indeed water proof. Surprizingly the gaiter and zip aren't the gimmics I had first thought. Most importantly the boot climbs technical ground ice and rock very well. Fit is a bit bigger 1/2 size than the Nepal Evo, for me more c

"Totally awesome mountaineering boot, but not for vertical ice"

Rating:****
I tried this boot indoors only, but tested as thoroughly as possible. Bought 1/2 size down as the boot fits large. Seems to be very warm. It's light and very comfy to walk in. Fantastic for mountaineering, but TOO SOFT for sustained vertical ice. I think your calves will get burned out with the lack of ankle support needed for that. The laces are impossible to reach under the outer layer when wearing gloves. Due to the overall softer construction, my heel wasn't held in place as well as with the Nepal Evo GTX or my Kayland Super Ice, but that's only a problem on vertical stuff. The looks are extremely flashy, which might attract too much attention in developing countries.

"Light, comfortable, warm"

Rating:*****
I took the Baturas ice climbing in Adirondack park and on a Presidential Traverse (White Mountains). They were great at both. I was hoping that the built-in gaiter thing would allow me to tuck in several layers so that I could avoid bringing gaiters, but no such luck. One thin layer, maybe. So I still needed gaiters. I decided that they weren't quite warm enough for a Denali trip (in May-09) so I'll have to rely on the Scarpa Invernos again, but the weight of the Baturas is so amazing I'll be taking them everywhere else. Unlike my plastic boots, the Baturas do not have an inner-boot, but I didn't have any problems keeping them dry on a four-day trip.

Extremely satisfied with these boots!

Rating:*****
...have used them eight days now on ice. In over 30 years of ice climbing, these are far and away the BEST ice climbing boots I've ever used! They protect the ankle and yet let it move almost freely in all directions. The heel cup keeps the heel in place better than any boot I've ever owned, yet the toe box is roomy. They climb well and walk well, and are quite warm. Since they are for the most part synthetic and have an integrated zipper, I still have my concerns as to whether they will hold up to continued abuse....

I'm glad I spent the doe on these boots!

I've had eight days of ice climbing in these boots now. They climb better by far than any other boots I've ever used for ice climbing! They are extremely comfortable! The heel cup really hangs on to the heel, yet the toe box is roomy. The ankle is allowed to move in all directions and yet has some support. They are pretty warm. I am extremely happy with these boots!

"Everything that the nepal evo is, but somehow better I love technology!"

Rating:*****
Waited for these for a while. They cost a pretty penny, but when your feet are on the line they are well worth the dollar. These boots are lighter than the awesome nepal evo and are warmer and are easier to lace up.
