| Lowa Renegade GTX Mid - excellent light hiker - I ordered several boots in several sizes from Zappos in order to have a light to medium hiker for a three-week trip through southwest parks. This Lowa was the winner. I was able to order a narrow width, but had to go to 11-1/2 for enough room wearing SmartWool Hiking socks (I typically wear 10-1/2 or 11). In the local store where I first tried these, the footbed/sole felt too thin. But when other brands/styles weren't working, I went back to the Renegade, and found narrow width at Zappos. I'm really pleased with these boots: fit is excellent, comfort is very good, weight/balance is outstanding, durability seems outstanding so far, no problems with moisture (external or internal), traction was overall excellent. And I like the way they look too. Not problems with cushion (as I'd initially thought), and I hit some seriously rough terrain. I wore these without breaking them in on a three-week trip through national parks in the southwest. Some reviews had noted no need, but I would have preferred to wear them a little before heading out. Regardless, I had no problems with blisters, and very little with pressure points. Trip was varied terrain, day hikes only, some limited (no add'l equip) climbing, from 116 degrees at -282 feet below sea level in Death Valley to mid-30's at 11,000+ in Bryce Canyon and Tioga Pass of Yosemite. The boots breathed much better than I expected, never feeling too hot or moist. Just the right amount of lateral ankle support for me in these activities. Very light boots. I'm going to experiment with some other insoles for additional arch support. But that wasn't a real problem on this trip. When seated and crossing feet at ankles, got the lace hooks locked, and needed to disentangle them a few times. I will definitely look at Lowa when it comes time to purchase heavier boots! And--as always--Zappos is a pleasure to deal with. | |

Dayhiking Nirvana for the Feet

I hike mostly in the Great Smoky Mtn's area where many trails are either rocky, wet or both and often the routes involve multiple unbridged stream crossings. Lowa Renegades are great boots for those conditions.

| Lightweight, great ankle support. The first thing I thought when I opened the box was that Zappos must have sent me the wrong size, the boots looked way smaller than I expected. But in fact, they fit perfectly. The Renegade is just somehow magically trimmed down. The boots are certainly incredibly light. They feet almost sneaker-like on the feet, and offer the best kind of ankle support, your stride isn't affected, you can bend forward and backward quite easily, but side bending is supportively constrained from many angles. I was a little worried about how the asphalt/blue would look in real life, but it's pretty subtle and can pass for black on a casual glance. The only problems were: I ordered an EE, I'm pretty sure I got an EE, but the boot feels narrower than EE. It's interesting that the people with narrow feet say the narrow boot is too wide and the people with wide feet say the wide boot is too narrow. Something to keep in mind if your feet are especially wide or narrow. I find that the ball of the foot is not well cushioned and felt pain under the joint of my big toe wearing these after the first mile, at first. While the leather is still stiff, these had a tendency, at least on my foot, to fold sharply and bite into the tops of the feet at the toe joint, across the whole foot. If this has never happened to you before, it probably has something to do with my stride, e.g. I found that the Vasque Sundowners would bite into the top of my big toe at first. | |

First 3 pairs were great, the 4th no

| I have had 4 pairs of these boots going back 8 years and 2 or 3 changes in design. The first 3 pairs lasted me 2 years each. The 4th and final pair I just returned because they have ended up to narrow and I had some pain in my right little toe after a long days use. I have a wide foot and am not easy to fit a boot too. I actually wore the 4th pair for quite a few months before deciding to return them [...]. With all that said my wife and are avid day hikers in the Northern Sierra regions and these boots up to the 4th pair have been nothing short of awesome. If they fit my foot I'd still be using them. I loved them so much I started to call them my life assault shoe. Which basically meant if there was any question about any activity I was doing this was my go to shoe. I have traveled the world with them and never been let down. From Disneyland to wet and dry hiking in the Sierra's this was my shoe of choice. Unfortunately either my foot got wider (which I do not doubt) or Lowa narrowed the fit a little becuase I cannot use them any longer. Again I typically have to buy EEEE widths in dress shoes and running shoes so I'm used to these problems. If they fit buy them. | |

| I was primarily looking for a relatively lighter weight boot for longer hikes and these seemed on first look to work for me, and still do after several weeks. Will have to see about winter. Despite what Lowa says on their site, these are really not stiff enough for light to moderate-weight backpacking and take caution of reviews based on that or heavier use. The soles on these flex, which is helpful on uphills but the lack of a stiff sole will not be to many people's liking (esp. with a backpack!). Also, the Lowa insoles are of low quality and something with better cushioning is suggested. As for foot fit, I have Taylor's bunions and have been able to make these work with a little spot stretching, tho breakin takes a while. I prefer a boot that is snug on my relatively thin lower legs/ankles, so that my leg/foot work as one, and these do fairly well, though need retieing occasionally. The middle tongue loop is poorly placed and probably best ignored. The plastic upper hooks do worry me. Most worrisome tho is that the boot uppers are unusually designed for a hiking boot, with a few separate pieces of leather held together with lots of exposed stitching. I've got my fingers crossed about that. | |

| I have an A width foot and typically have to buy shoes as short as possible to get something narrow enough, since most supply a B width for a narrow. I also use an orthotic, which helps some. I buy a US size 12 low top walking shoe so that is what I bought in the Lowa GTX. Fit was perfect for me. I walked 30 miles on concrete/pavement before going on an Alaskan vacation, shoes were perfect from first step. I have now spent a week in Alaska and never wore anything else the whole time. Only went on very short hikes, however. These shoes are very comfortable and very light for a lace up medium height shoe. Not as much cushioning as a casual walking shoe, but much more stable and good on normal hiking terrain in national parks. Enough cushioning for me, and I have back problems so I need as much cushioning as possible without trying to hike in slippery low top walking shoes. I havent checked the weatherproofing, as it has been unusually dry and sunny here most of the time. Overall, very happy that I spent the extra bucks for a narrow width, light, high quality, hiking shoe. | |

| Yippie Skippie - O.K. Here's my take on this outstanding boot. I usually wear a size 9 in a dress/casual shoe & a size 9.5-10(narrow) in a running shoe. After reading the comments below, I ordered a size 8.5 (narrow)...PERFECT! Plenty of toe room with a medium weight wool hiking sock & sock liner. I did replace the insole with a berry colored "Superfeet" insole (also available on this site) as I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. Now, it's the perfect boot. My first hiking boot, back in 1980 was a Lowa. I've owned many other brands since. My foot has always slid around and I've had to wear multiple pairs of socks & put extra insoles in them to fill up the space due to my Narrow feet, then they would sweat. I work 8 hours a day on concrete floors PLUS hike around 1500 miles a year (just over 100 miles each month in the Western United States). These boots seem pretty much perfect. Not too light, definitely not to heavy, not too hot & not too stiff but give great support... I may buy a second pair I LOVE THESE BOOTS! | |

Comfortable -/w ankle support-Waterproof

| Bought these because I have the Renegade GTX shoe equivalent and I LOVE them. I did not need to break these boots in. They were quite comfortable right out of the box just like the Renegade shoe. Very lightweight compared to my other backpacking boots by almost a full pound. The GTX version with Gortex will keep your feet dry, as long as you don't let water seep in over the top and the ankle support is superior for a boot of this weight. Cons: my first overnight backcountry trip in these was in the Mount Rogers NRA and I found the soles did not have the traction I needed and I did feel the terrain through the soles (mostly rocks). I would recommend these to a fellow hiker altough not for long trips in more rocky terrian and where a sole with more bite might be required. Perfect for moist day hikes, and overnights where weight, comfort and ankle support are a must!! | |

Lowas Are The Bomb! | |

I've owned at least 4 pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Boots over the past 6 years and have put countless miles on them. In one case, I wore the same pair virtually every day through a Scottish Fall & Winter, with side trips to Bavaria, The Czeck Republic & Poland- all in very cold & wet weather. During this time, I easily averaged 6 miles per day. Never once have I found the minutest flaw or failure. The quality is outstanding, as is the comfort. You simply will not find, regardless of cost, a better hiking boot for average terrain and/or the urban jungles.

Great Hikers | |

These are great boots for fast and light hiking on any trail. They grip well to any surface wet or dry. Comfort also comes in big with these even though a little help comes from "superfeet" greens. I was somewhat worried about the breathability of these boots because they are "waterproof" but I have yet to have any hotspots, so they breathe very well. The Renegades are not at all for packing any weight over 15 pounds, and thats pushing it, the support is just not there in the ankle or sole stability. Overall I use these for daily hikes and even a boots and utes run once in a while. True to size and somewhat for narrow feet.

Not rugged enough for off-trail

| I bought these Lowas because I needed lightweight boots for frequent int'l travel. They are lightweight, reasonably comfortable initially, and very water-resistant (to the point that feet stay dry even when boots are immersed in shallow water or mud). However the boot is poorly designed: stitching is positioned at the widest part of the boot exterior, so it is very prone to abrasion, and doesn't hold up. I've needed to have mine re-sewn 3X in 2 yrs, so now the leather won't hold stitching. Also, the soles are very soft (easily gouged) & flexible, and ankle support isn't great, so the boots aren't suitable for sidehilling or scrambling in talus or scree. They're probably best for day hikes on trails, but if you're considering any use more demanding than that, I would look for something other than these Lowas. | |

| Warning! Stay away from these boots if you do any extensive urban trekking! These boots - despite what the Lowa website says about all of their hiking/trekking - can NOT be resoled! I had shelled out the money believing that they could be resoled, when their own authorized cobbler said they could not. I was lucky to get a full winter season out of them before the sole wore away. So if you do a lot of urban trekking save your money and get a cheaper disposable boot like Merrell, which are just as comfortable and water resistant. | |

| These boots feel fantastic straight out of box. No breaking required. But after the second hike, one lace hook (2nd from top) broke. It simply came off. On closer inspection, it looks like a poor design, so instead of replacing, I will get a different brand. Too bad, these were the comfiest boots I ever owned. | |

Bought these "lightweight" hiking boots after 2 years of having the shoe version. Like the shoe version, these Nubuck Beauties achieve comfort right out of the box. Please note: These hikers are not full backpacking boots, rather a lightweight, day-hiking mid. I took them on a 12 mile, 1.5 day/night trek with 25 lbs. on my back in the Mt. Rogers National Rec' Area. Although they had great ankle support, the soles are not meaty enough for rocky or rooty trails. I had several "I can feel the rock come right through the sole" moments. I also found it difficult to tighten the lower laces on descents to avoid my toes hitting the front of the boot. I suspect as I break them in, over time they may soften enough to tighten the instep laces. Also, I liked the slightly wider feel which allowed ample space for a liner and medium wool sock. Great day hiker, not recommended for multi-day backpacking trips.

| Boots are very comfortable right out of the box. This is my second pair...well, actually 3rd pair due to poor stitching on the latest version. My first pair that I bought a few years ago held up great! The nice looking brown boots. My recently purchased boots started to rip at the seam on the outside of the boot. I had no wear on the stitches...they just started to come undone after 6 months or so. On a good note for REI, they took my boots back and gave me a new replacement pair! THAT is customer service. Hopefully Lowa will create better stitching, and hopefully the curent pair I have do not encounter the same problems. | |

| I used this boot for day hikes and a couple of 150 milers. Have owned them for a couple of years then BAM...the seam on one of the boots just began to unravel. From having read others review I see this is not that uncommon for this boot. Other than that they are/were the perfect boot as I was able to put mega-mileage on them right out of the box which was my dominant buying motive. Am presently looking at other Lowas in preparation for 2 months on the AT next winter. | |
