Moosejaw (Spring 2010)

The Earlylight 2P by Marmot is an excellent two person tent with DAC FeatherLight poles that provide an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and make this tent easy to carry on longer hikes to site. This two-person tent provides an array of features to keep you happy as a clam when you’re out in the wild. If you're asleep in your Earlylight 2P and wake up from the pitter-patter of rain hitting your tent, the Catenary cut floor is fully waterproof to ensure the rain remains on the exterior of the tent. Your new Marmot tent also features a full coverage fly and adjustable fly vent for ventilation, and a snag-free zipper flap to zip and unzip without getting the fabrics caught. The only thing keeping you up at night will be your tent-mate snoring, or the bears eating your hot dogs.

Good Value

Rating:*****
I bought this on sale in November 2007 for about $150 including footprint. It is fairly lightweight for the size. There are lighter offerings out there, but not at this price point. The setup is quick, the only problem I have when setting up is figuring out which way the fly goes. I've clipped the fly in and staked it out only to realize it is backward several times. Ventilation is so so. I usually sleep with the vestibules zipped open just a tad to let the condensation out and close them up if is starts to rain. It is nice for one person, and snug with two, but not unbearably so. The dual vestibules help out with the crowding issue so both sleepers can keep packs and boots outside the tent. The two doors are nice as well so there is no crawling over each other for midnight cathole visits. I use this mostly solo and it fits into my lightweight backpacking scheme of keeping pack weight under 15 lbs without water. I've been using the heck out of it and I am very pleased. Would I take it mountaineering in the winter? No, I have a bomber Mountain Hardwear tent for that (which weighs over 8 pounds!). But this one is a good weight, good price (catch it on sale!) and holding up well.

First Tent, First Kiss

Rating:*****
My very first tent purchase! I bought this tent 3 years ago and was extremely excited to set it up for a test run. However, it was January in South Dakota. I was bound and determined to set her up even if it was a 3 season tent and I was wearing my down jacket and wool socks. I solicited the help of my boyfriend and we trekked off to the nearest city park. In the blistering cold of a winter afternoon, we set her up. There was no threading of the poles, and nearly no thought involved. Just the way I like it. A very straight forward design. Before we knew it, she was set up and ready for a test run. We hopped in and delighted in the effortless set-up and .... well, that's the end of the tent-talk because I just received my very FIRST KISS... in my very first tent.

End of the story. I've since dumped the boy, but not the tent. I've used this tent many times and am currently still a satisfied customer. By morning, yes, there is usually a bit of condensation, nothing I can't live with. Above all, this tent is easy to set up, comfortable construction and long enough for me (I'm 6'1"). Thanks Marmot.

Footprint included!

Rating:****
I've only spent two nights in the tent while car camping. The weather was nice without much wind and no precipitation. I bought the tent with single overnight backpacking in mind - to fish remote alpine lakes but haven't done this yet. The price was good considering that the footprint came with it and didn't require extra expense. Set up was quick and easy. I think the fly is a neat design but it did flap a bit when it got breezy. Having a door on both sides of the tent is a plus as is the fact that there is a vestibule for each side. I think it would be fairly cozy for two people but is fine for one. The tent walls sagged inward somewhat giving it a slightly cramped feeling and with objects in the gear loft I would bump my head on the loft when sitting (and I'm only five eight). This contributed to the mildly cramped feeling. Taped seams are another plus. Ventilation is very good but I wonder how well the rain will be kept out if windy and raining. In general, I feel this tent is going to meet my needs and I think it is a good value.

Great tent for big guy, looking at wrong tent for little guy.

Thanks and all praise due to Randy (My personal Allah) at the Rochester Store. All of my EXP. comes from 12 years of being in the army. So I know little to nothing of creature comfort in the field. Randy got me hooked up with what I thought I needed. A one person Sierra Design. He had it brought in to the store and called me when it came in. At the store we set it up and threw in a ruck and saw that it was to small for me. 6'0 240lbs. Randy and I went at all the light weight 2 person tents. Summing it up, he didn't push me into anything I didn't want or what was in the store already. It just so happen that after all the checking this tent was in the store....set it up, loved it, bought it.

GREAT little tent. You won't be disappointed!

Rating:*****
This is a GREAT 2-person tent that actually comes with the rain cover and footprint. It's cozy with 2 people inside, but it's long, so there's room for your packs (my bf is 5'8" and he fits with room to spare.) It's easy to set up, and the screen is only on the top, so you can get changed inside without putting on a show for your neighbors. Plus, the screen on the top is nice for stargazing. There's a handy gear loft inside and some pockets, but if the gear loft is up, it's hard to sit up fully. The tent survived some gnarly wind and rain without a hitch. This is definitely my favorite 2-person tent yet. Also, my favorite color is orange so that didn't hurt either. Get this tent!

Awesome backpacking tent for the price

Rating:*****
This tent has served me for two years of downpours, hail, snow, and wind (with some mild days mixed in). It has yet to leak in any storm that nature's thrown at it. Its relatively lightweight and sturdy when staked correctly. In terms of size, it sleeps two very comfortably for a backpacking tent. I've slept three in here but that was definitely tight. One of the best features this tent has going is the HUGE double vestibule. With two people, each individual has his/her own door with a spacious vestibule. It's perfect for de-layering in a storm and storing your gear. Overall, this is one of the better backpacking tents for the price.

Easy to set up and take down.

Rating:*****
This tent is the easiest tent to set up and take down. When I first got it in the mail I went to the living room to check out the set up so I would know how to do it in a hurry if needed. From the time I took everything out of the provided water-proof bag, it took me a mere 5 minutes to completely set up, and that included reading the instructions! This tent will comfortably sleep 2 normal sized people, 1 huge person, 3 small people, or 5 midgets! Great buy, and something you will definitely be pleased with!

Wicked Awesome!

Rating:*****
I love this tent! got this tent to replace an old Kelty. Even though this tent was at the same price point as the Kelty, by far the Marmot is superior in every way. Quality components, material and detail. This is primarily used by us for float trips. I'd agree that you want to be close with whoever you share this tent with as it's a typical 2-person backpacking tent (smallish). I'd recommend this tent and was so impressed with Marmot quality that I just purchased 2 new Marmot sleeping bags from Moosejaw this week.

Great Tent

Rating:*****
This tent is awesome! sets up very easy, and is plenty roomy. Other reviewers say it is difficult to fit in 2 people? Must be 2 HUGE people because this tent is giant. Granted, I am 5'10" 150 pounds, but I'd say you could fit 3 people in here pretty easy. Vestibules are huge and the bare-bones setup option is super nice. (You basically just thread the poles through nothing but the rain-fly and footprint to make a lightweight but waterproof shelter.)

When I bought this I was so excited I set it up in my living room.

Rating:****
Great little lightweight tent and in an awesome, bright color too! The only thing that might be a problem is that while it says it's a two person tent it really is more of a 'one person plus your stuff' kind of tent, unless you want to be really cozy with whoever your sharing a tent with (and I'm not judging). Otherwise this a great tent to cart around the woods.

You only save money in the store......

Rating:***
I like to solo backpack and bough this for when I want some extra comfort...other than single person or bivy. Pros: It's easy to set up because of the clips and plenty roomy for one. It also kept the rain out fairly well. Cons: It was sometimes difficult to figure out which way the fly goes and the zippers are flimsy and kept getting stuck. Last month I spent three nights in it on Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota and it blew down on me in a storm while I was lying there thinking about how much money I saved. Nice tent for casual camping but not the trail.
