The Marmot Men's Genesis Jacket is a completely waterproof softshell that can take on weather that sends other softshells to the bottom of your pack. This ability comes from Techtonic Bonded seams which create a waterproof seal where other softshells are defenseless. Pull on the ERG hood and you're ready for the worst weather. Not only is the Genesis completely waterproof, it also has the incredible breathability, mobility, and comfort that make softshells great. You can work hard trudging through the waist-deep snowdrifts in 35mph winds, and this jacket will keep you both warm and dry.

Amazing

Rating:*****

This was the first softshell jacket I have owned, opting instead for a light hardshell and a windstopper micro-fleece layer underneath. I did this in the past because I wanted complete wind-proof layers, but the option of breathability on the way up a long skin-track. Last weekends trip in this jacket was the first true test of what this jacket can do. I was out for 8 hours in this jacket, with sustained winds at 40 mph, gusting even higher. Riming conditions were encountered for the 1st half of the day, followed by calmer conditions in the second half. At no time did I feel this jacket was letting the wind in, and remarkably; never felt it was not breathing either. I've also taken it out in calmer, sunnier weather where I would have been clammy underneath on the skin-track/slog up slope....this jacket lived up to it's billing as a breathable, but windproof layer. I am a complete convert to the softshell jacket. My only 2 complaints are as follows: the pit zips seem a little small for my tastes, however I have yet to be in a situation where I would need more ventilation....if I were, I suppose that I would not need the jacket in the first place. The second complaint is that the velcro cuffs are built a bit large such that when I cinch them down, I'm almost running out of velcro. I will be modifying this area with more velcro to accommodate this problem. Bottom line, none of these gripes warrants demoting this to a 4-star.....Top notch all around.

top of the charts

Rating:*****

I just picked up a new genesis for 180 cad. I had a OR MITHRIL that was a decent Jacket pretty waterproof but was tight under the arms in a medium and a largewas to big. I also have an arcteryx gamma mx hoody that is super comfortable but kind of thin and does not offer the level of protection that my new genisis does this thing feels bombproof definitely a winter weight softshell. I love the attention to detail pitzips work one handed easily drawstrings are excellent hood is excellent the looks of this jacket are as amazing atheletic fit but room one middle layer all I need in Vancouver weather. My few minor complaints are velcro on sleeves and back of hood does not feel to sticky and may move when wet, jacket could be about an inch longer that would be great.but by no means are these minor issues deal breakers as all in all form fit and function as well as looks are great

A superb softshell

Rating:*****

Fantastic jacket that is a great combo of softshell and light insulation. The very thin lining does indeed allow you to ditch even your middle-layer on relatively cold days. Used it last week in the PNW in 15degree temps and only had a medium thickness first layer on underneath it. Huge pit zips too. A real all-season and into the spring jacket. The other great feature is that there is nothing to catch any of the zippers, ever. no more fumbling with stuck zippers with easy one hand action. no not that type of one hand action. the reflective seams and logo keep you illuminated while you stumble out of the snorting elk bar all f'd up on tequila and into the busy parking lot. why pay for arcteryx. save a few hundie and get in my opinion a better jacket. do it.

highly recommend this soft shell, A++

Rating:*****
Marmot really did it with this jacket. Welded construction rather than seemed should be very durable. If you like the roomy fit of the Sharp Point as well as the pit zips, but would like the addition of a hood then this one is for you. It doesn't have the winstopper membrane, but is still very wind resistant and most likely a tad more breathable because of that. M1 shell technology means it's very warm and made to wear over 1-2 layers. The fit is perfect - length of the sleeves as wells both the fit around the chest and waist and finally length at the torso. I'm 6'0" 185 pounds and I feel like the jacket was custom made for me.

Best Jacket I've ever purchased

Rating:*****
I work in law enforcment in Detroit, MI and this jacket is by far the absolute best jacket I've ever purchased. Possibly the best 3 or 4 season jacket I ever seen. I am warm blooded and don't like wearing bulky coats and this jacket is the perfect solution; light weight, extremely warm yet still breathable....perfect for our miserably long winters here in Michigan. It can also be used in the Fall or Spring as a nice windbreaker or rain coat. I am looking to purchase another as back-up before they are all gone. Hopefully marmot will bring this cut/style back.

Good Stuff

Rating:*****
This is almost a hard shell jacket in that the outside is fairly stiff and windproof. I have not had it in the rain but I would imagine it would be pretty waterproof as well. The fleece lining is very soft and warm. This is a warmer jacket than it feels based on its thickness. The sizing is a tiny bit smaller than most. I guess it could be termed athletic fit so it is not good for wearing over layers unless you buy a size up.

What Wind

Rating:*****

I wore this Jacket at Alta the first weekend they were open. At the top of the Collins lift it was windy and cold and Jacket worked great keeping the wind were it belonged; outside. I was able to dress with lighter base layers. This Jacket as well as my North Face Gore Tex shell. I will use this Jacket until the cold weather dictates otherwise.

Great coat!

Rating:****
I bought this soft shell for my husband, who normally wears a large- but the sleeves were sooo long! We returned it for a medium, which hasn't come yet, but hopefully it will fit. It seems like a great coat, we'll see after 08-09 ski season, as my hubby tends to wear things out pretty easily!

Reminds Me of My Old Yellow Slicker

Rating:****
I am a hiker and glorified hill walker so I was looking forward to a soft shell with a hood. The style and design are great for adventuring but it feels very rubbery and looks like a giant pumpkin. There are soft shells with much better feels while hiking and climbing.

Great product

Rating:****
just used it for a cold road bike ride -worked great; plan to use for climbing/mountaineering; like the features such as hard shell protection, hood, and Ipod pocket; slightly long in the arms and could use just a bit more velcro or other for attachment at sleeve ends

Negative Reviews:

Plastic Jacket Gone Bad.

Rating:*
This jacket shows me the downside of our generation of "Plastic" jackets. The hood visor is malformed, and you can't correct it. The cuffs are supposed to be flexible, but one is stiff as plastic and crooked, you can't get it to fit your wrist. I'm sorry to say Marmot design has gone downhill over the years. The anatomical designs they made 4+ years ago are gone .Angel wing movement replaced by tin-man movement....it just does not move -with- you . This jacket has no flex, no anatomical movement, malformed plastic cuffs and visor and is just no joy to wear.
