The Marmot Guide's Down Sweater is the epitome of the classic, essential down jacket - being the product that more or less launched Marmot into existence back in the 70s - and now it's available with a warm, insulated hood. Warmer and heavier than an ultralight sweater like the Marmot Zeus or Ares jackets, the Guides Down Hoody stands on its own just fine as temperatures head for the zero mark, and can withstand even more frigid temperatures if you're on the move rather than standing around. Marmot suggests that the Guides Down Hoody also works well under a shell, although it's a little thick for midlayer duty in our eyes; we don't doubt that it would work very well, as long as the fit of your shell is relaxed enough.

ABOUT MARMOT

In April 1971, University of California Santa Cruz students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley were in Alaska on the Juneau Icefields on a school project in Glaciology. It was here on the glacier, amongst these students, that the idea of a Marmot club began. To become a Marmot, you had to climb a glaciated peak with another Marmot. One of the rules of the club was that everyone was president. Most of the other rules dealt with the collegiate fascination with bodily functions.

Eric and Dave went on to found Marmot Mountain Works in 1974, and through the years the company made lots of innovations in down jackets, sleeping bags, Gore-Tex apparel, and beyond. Their modest enterprise is now one of the largest and most respected outdoor gear companies in the world, distributed in over 60 countries, and it is still all about the highest-quality, innovative performance products.

Keep warm in a classic, puffy goose down hoody the next time you head out on a frosty, cold-weather adventure by pulling on Marmot's Guides Down hoody. While 650-fill goose down insulates you from the cold, DWR-coated fabric sheds light precipitation and elastic cuffs and drawcord keep drafts out and your body heat in.

down hoodie

I ordered both xl and xxl. A xl usually fits me but didnt, so I think the sizing is off. I am 190 # and 5' 11". Also I have a Parbat (a similar jacket) by marmot made in the 1990's. The sleeves bind more when reaching in this modern design, also the sizing is totally different. The exterior is thin rip stop nylon, it makes the jacket very light and easily stuffed down in a pack. However the exterior fabric does not offer much protection from a 20 mph wind. The jacket as a whole offers really good coverage, is warm, packs down easily and is very light in weight. It would work really well in the harshest conditions in conjunction with a waterproof shell.
