Marmot Minimalist Jacket Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

What a shell!

I've been looking for a rain jacket for quiet some time and found that the Marmot Minimalist Jacket is the, somewhat affordable, and right match for my needs. I must say that this jacket blocks wind perfectly, and if layered right underneath you will stay warm in gusty cold times between 20°F and low sub zero temperatures - Seriously! Especially if you are moving a lot this jackets, will not disappoint you. Long arm pit vents allow for great breathability, and although it wasn't designed for biking in - I found it to be quiet nice and comfortable. It isn't extra long in the back, but I'm not a fan of that any wayways. The chest pocket is quiet large, my Samsung Note 2 fits inside with even more room to spare and since the zipper is taped, this pocket stays truly dry; whereas, the two hand pockets are not and will not stay 100% dry in downpour-uses for over an hour. Sadly, the main zipper is not taped either and only protected by a flap with a few velcro parts. This really is the only complaint I have, since small amounts of water seep through in an extended time in the wet. The jacket will ceep you dry, comfortable, and warm if needed. In my opinion, if you plan on being outside for the entire day or even longer you should expect to get a little wet anyways. Water will not come through if you're out walking for 1-2 hours. When cycling, water might come through even after 30 min, depending on wind and amount of rain.
With a base and mid layer underneath, I felt nice, warm, and stayed dry going dh-skiing all day long. The lower drawcord help a lot to keep the heat in, and most snow out. With just a baselayer underneath, the jacket felt comfortable while riding 100miles to the coast in a, wet, late-fall tour - on climbs and when it didn't rain I could easily open or close the arm pit vents with one hand, allowing me fast and comfortable control of my temperature. What else can I say? It looks great! Several people complimented me on this rain jacket. It packs down to a size of ~a half loaf of bread. I'm wearing size L, am 5'11", 210lb, athletic built and the jacket fits well, not bulky, with enough room for layering. Also, the hood is large enough to go over my bike and mountaineering helmet and is adjustable for comfortable use without a helmet. Had the jacket for 10 months now, no signs of wear, although I have put it through a lot of bushwhacking. Enjoy!

highly recomended

I bought this jacket when it first came out(when it was named the Minima) years ago and it has never failed to keep me dry. I needed a jacket that was lite, compressible, and wouldn't make me sweat to death on a hot rainy summer day. This jacket fits the bill and after years of rough wear is still in my bag ready to fend off the next downpour. If you need a jacket with lots of pockets and its just going to hang on a hook until you need it,,, get a differant jacket! But if you need a reliable waterproof jacket that you can carry without the burden of bulk and weight , or a big hole in your wallet, this is my first choice. also I can say that I've always had good experience with all the marmot products I've owned and with any problems I've had being rectified to my satisfaction.

Best Goretex Jacket for the Money

Best jacket for the money. Here is why:

1) Zipper flaps: Regardless of what manufactors say, "water tight" zips are not waterproof. They will leak over time. This jacekt has a flap but also has a seam that runs vertically along the inner flap that keep water from getting to you.

2) Pockets are sealed and taped with goretex from the inside. You could fill your pockets with water and it would not reach you.

3) Minimal seams: There are only a few seams so the jacket ends up being more breathable.

This is the best goretex jacket on the market for the money. If you are looking to keep totally dry and want to breath in temps at 70 degrees or below (no goretex jacket breaths above about 70 degrees as it requires a temperture differential to breath) then this is the jacket for you.

Versatile Gore-Tex Shell

I have owned this jacket for 2 years and I find it is thicker than other rain shells. This allows the jacket to be used in more weather conditions than just rain. It has pit zips for ventilation when you're hot. I have sailed to the Bahamas Ft. Lauderdale and it worked flawlessly in the rough sea conditions. I recently took it to New Zealand on the Routeburn Great Walk and it was money. I also used this as a ski jacket at Loveland, CO and Mt. Rose, Lake Tahoe in Jan/Feb. As long as you have the proper layers underneath, I find this shell to be awesome all year round. I’m 6’4â€\x9D 190lbs and own the XL, it is a regular fit, not slim/athletic. Adjustable hood is crap, the Velcro is weak. 4.5/5.

Great Jacket

I just purchased this jacket so I have not been able to get out and use it in the rain and snow just yet. But I did want to mention the size and fit of this jacket. It fits a bit slimmer then I had anticipated, which might make layering in the winter snugger then I would like it to be. Otherwise I think this is the best deal on the market for a Gore-Tex Paclite rain jacket. The hood is a good size for a casual around-town jacket. The construction of the jacket is very solid, Marmot makes a beautiful product. If you want a gore-tex paclite jacket but dont want to spend close to 300 bucks on an Arcteryx or 250 on a patagonia, this is the way to go.

Great year round jacket. Highly waterproof and breaths well.

I purchased this jacket last fall for all the rain we were having and ended up working great in a layering system for winter. The material is made with Gore-tex which produces a highly waterproof yet breathable jacket. The pit zips allow you to stay cool while shedding summer rain on the trail. It also works well blocking cold winter winds when layered over a fleece. It actually block wind so well I use it as a motorcycle jacket. It can be compressed small enough to fit in the chest pocket, which makes it great for carrying in a backpack. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a year round rain jacket. Plus Marmot has a lifetime guarantee!

Great jacket for this price range

An amazing product all around. If you want to put on a rain jacket and forget you are wearing anything, then this is the jacket you are looking for. Although I can not speak towards its durability, I can say this is a extremely waterproof, windproof, and breathable jacket. Marmot always produces exceptional products, and this jacket is not exception. Not to mention what a price.

Great product!

I initially bought a large but realized that I really needed a XL so I could do layering underneath. Sunny Sports was very helpful with the return process. I had to get a different color but that was not a big issue with me. The product is great. It is well designed and light weight enough to take hiking. I recommend this product to anyone.
Relunsfo at SunnySports on 08/08/2012

Keeps the water out and heat in

Works great in the rain! I used it for hiking Rainier and pressure washing on a rainy day. Stayed completely dry! Gets a little warm though, even with the pit zips. Just make sure you layer properly when you have it on, don't underestimate it's heat. Also, gore-tex has a certain smell to it, which can resemble an odd B.O. smell, so just be aware.
Timothy at Moosejaw on 07/09/2012

Lightweight and comfortable

I like this jacket. The sizing was a bit off since XL was too small and XXL is a bit too big (around chest/stomach) for me. In any case, the jacket is really comfortable and lightweight and holds rain well. The only thing I don't like in this jacket is the left-handed zipper.
TheMightyFinn at REI on 05/05/2012

Negative Reviews:

Fit seems different now (smaller)

My current jacket is a replacement for a lost Minimalist Jacket XXL. It is a handy, compact and fairly rainproof shell for most purposes. The fit however, on this new one, seems different (smaller). I am the same size but this jacket seems smaller all around. The sleeve length seems the same but the chest fit is tighter, it seems shorter and the hood is definitely smaller. The current XXL does not fit well over my parka, does not have room enough for a helmet and covers my mouth when fully zipped. Also, the material wears poorly and becomes shiny, especially at the cuffs.
