Marmot PreCip Jacket -

We haven't seen the numbers to confirm it, but we are pretty sure that the Marmot Precip Jacket is the best-selling raincoat in all of history. Its popularity is well-founded; it's light enough to take on a hike, waterproof enough to shield you from a thunderstorm, and affordable enough to not break the bank. The 2.5-layer PreCip technology that gives the jacket its name is based on a bi-component waterproof coating, comprising both monolithic (solid) and microporous (full of tiny holes) layers, finished off with a dry-touch inner treatment. As for how well it works, the popularity of the jacket should tell you everything you need to know.

Feature list from Marmot:

ABOUT MARMOT

In April 1971, University of California Santa Cruz students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley were in Alaska on the Juneau Icefields on a school project in Glaciology. It was here on the glacier, amongst these students, that the idea of a Marmot club began. To become a Marmot, you had to climb a glaciated peak with another Marmot. One of the rules of the club was that everyone was president. Most of the other rules dealt with the collegiate fascination with bodily functions.

Eric and Dave went on to found Marmot Mountain Works in 1974, and through the years the company made lots of innovations in down jackets, sleeping bags, Gore-Tex apparel, and beyond. Their modest enterprise is now one of the largest and most respected outdoor gear companies in the world, distributed in over 60 countries, and it is still all about the highest-quality, innovative performance products.

Moosejaw

The Marmot Men’s PreCip Jacket is so legit for those dull, rainy days. Well, you could make them un-dull by putting on the PreCip and going out and having fun outdoors still. This Marmot jacket is 100 percent seam taped, and is made from waterproof PreCip Dy Touch technology. So fancy. An elastic draw cord hem makes it easy to find the perfect fit, and this thing has a roll-up hood. Dang. You’ll probably want it to rain when you get this baby. Maybe not, but rainy days won’t be as bad.

Rock/Creek Outfitters

The Marmot PreCip Jacket is an extremely lightweight waterproof/breathable shell. The PreCip is fully featured with pitzips, core venting and everything else you'd expect from a $400 piece, yet it weighs half as much and costs only a fraction.
Made with a microporous polyurethane that is impregnated with silicon dioxide particles. These particles create small, numerous, very consistent holes that allow the barrier to pass small water vapor molecules but not the bigger liquid ones. This keeps the rain out while letting your sweat vapor work its way outside, away from your body, to keep you dry from the inside as well as from the outside.
Also, the PreCip Jacket is highly compressible - perfect for those outings when you don't expect it to rain but going without rain gear would be too risky.

Marmot PreCip Jacket Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Great jacket, even in summer

First off, the Mars Orange is BRIGHT! I know when I was looking at the jackets, I was finding it difficult to decide between the cayenne and the Mars Orange. If this orange was any brighter, it would be a bit obnoxious, so I'm glad I went with the mars orange, as the cayenne looks much lighter.

Secondly, for those trying to find what size they should buy: I'd recommend at least trying one on in a store even if you still order it online (what I did), but I am 6'1", 175 pounds, "aspiring" runners build (and by that I mean I don't look like a college cross-country runner, more like a soccer build), but have some size to me still. I bought a large because the medium was a little short on my build. The sleeves are just about right on my arms, but I also have a wingspan of someone who is 6'3 1/2", so keep that in mind. Really, if there was a medium-large, that would be my size. The medium would have been a little short, but this large is a bit long, also a lot more room in the chest/back area than I would prefer, and I'm really not that small of a guy there. I guess that's just room for layering. I know that's thorough, but I know it was a chore deciding online whether to go medium or large for me.

Besides aesthetics, this jacket is awesome. great breathability - in fact, in some conditions the material almost made me feel cooler than if I took it off. Hard to explain. Definitely protects against normal rainstorms: we've had 4 solid weeks of rain in Southern Indiana. Can't say I've been able to take it out backpacking or camping yet, but I have no doubt that it would hold up to any rainstorm that the sky could throw at it. It's super lightweight, which was a huge reason I purchased this jacket. I mean, if you're looking for a summer rain jacket for hiking and outdoor trips, this is it. It doesn't make you hot like other jackets I've worn. Really, it's probably perfect for layering in the cooler months too.

All around, I'd label this as the best of the rain jackets of it's kind out of the big names. I love it, feels great, and I'm so glad I payed the extra 20 bucks than other comparable jackets.
Joel at Campsaver.com on 05/05/2011
I have always wanted a light, waterproof jacket for the summer, but the quality names (Marmot being high on that list) were a little too expensive to justify. I got a gift card from work and figured I'd bite the bullet on the rest, but Zappos had the exact jacket I've coveted on sale! Short version of the rest of the story is that it's exactly what I expected. The second day after I received it, the weather took a typical Fall turn. In fact, I found myself in a situation where it was raining pretty hard and I needed to walk to a restaurant for lunch. My pants got wet, but my upper body was completely dry. I also tend to overheat pretty easily, so I didn't want a typical rain coat; I needed something that breathed. I could tell in this one trek that I'd never have a heat problem in this jacket. With the hood up and the cuffs tight, I could barely tell it was on, aside from the fact that I wasn't getting wet. My only issue is that one of the velcro tabs on the front flap was only partially sewn, but I should be able to stitch that myself without compromising the integrity of the jacket. All told, I can see why these are at the retail price. It's a technical garment that does exactly what it advertises. Getting it shipped to me for almost half that price was an unavoidable deal. On top of that, I had a question about how to use my gift card, so I tried the Zappos online chat option. I got top-tier service (as usual) and more. In summary, if you're researching lightweight, waterproof jackets suitable for warmer, inclement weather, the Marmot Precip will show up in most lists of top options. Having worn it for nearly a month in a number of different weather conditions, I'd put it at the top of my list.

Superb Lightweight Raingear

In 2005 I did a significant amount of research before choosing a lightweight raingear outfit for my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Based on the many positive reviews and on my hands-on comparisons, I settled on the Marmot Precip. And I was not disappointed. This outfit kept me dry and warm during snow blizzards and in torrential rain downpours. I can safely say that it prevented hypothermia on several occasions. I still have that orignal set, repaired by tape where I punctured and abraded it. It now serves as my emergncy kit in my truck; it also often rides in my daypack when I anticipate bad weather. I was so fond of my original Marmot Precip outfit that I bought an identical one to replace. But the old set just keeps on working so I have hardly ever used my new replacement kit. Take care of it, wash it with appropriate detergent and then waterproof it after washing and it will serve you very well for a long time. I unequivocally recommend Marmot Precip.

Worthwhile, warm-weather rain protection

I coach, so I got this specifically to wear on rainy days at practices and games. When I took the jacket out of the package, it had a strange, crinkling sound and feel. Either that's worn off after several times wearing the jacket or I'm used to it. Performance is outstanding - rain beads up and runs off the jacket.
The zippers are fairly sturdy. The snap at the bottom of the zipper is very firm. I do not really care for Velcro, and there are about three small strips that hold the storm flap closed over the zipper; a small strip on each pocket to cover the zippers; and a small strip on the hood to roll and secure it. The jacket is very light weight and packable. I bought a size medium, and it is big enough to wear a sweatshirt or a fleece vest under it. (The jacket has no insulation.)
Despite the Velcro, I like this jacket very much and would purchase another in the future.

Waterproof, Lightweight Jacket

Great buy for this type of garment. Used for rainy out-and-about, jogging, and backpacking.
A couple of annoyances are the pit zips and the hood. The pit zips are nearly impossible to zip up while wearing - if it's chilly and I want to close them, the last thing I want to do is take off my jacket. However, unzipping is a cinch. The hood could use work. When loose, you lose peripheral vision and when tightened up, the front bill folds over your eyes. The hood has a velcro strap on the back of it which you can use to pull it back and out of eyesight, but with any activity the velcro doesn't hold.
Other than the 2 things listed, it's a really good deal.

Great Waterproof Shell

I’m a tall, lean (6’ 7” – 220 lbs) rower that was looking for a waterproof jacket that I can use when I go out rowing. Typically jackets either have sleeves that are too short, or the sleeves are long enough, but the chest size is enormous. This jacket fits me perfectly, and is very good for putting on base layer clothing for cold days. If it’s a hot day, the jacket is light and breaths well so that I can stay dry in a Florida-like climate. I guess the only flaw I can find is that the pockets sit a little high, which may be a result of my size. I definitely recommend this jacket to any athlete looking to keep out the rain.
Eric at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 12/12/2008

This is perhaps the most versatile piece of running gear I own. I have used it in 100 mile ultra races, hiking in the backcountry of NC and even while deep sea fishing. The great thing about the jacket is it can keep you warm and keep moisture out makig it great for races where you are moving through various altitudes. When I was looking for a good versatile jacket, a running friend suggested it since he uses it at Hardrock every year. That sold me and I have now bought three of these. The zippers under the arms are great for venting when you start to warm up but need to keep out rain or snow. Defintely worth the money.

Bedford Boyce at Backcountry.com on 06/13/2012

good quality for the price

I bought this to replace a Marmot Precip jacket that I had for 6 years that the waterproofing wore out. I had attempted re-waterproofing with very limited success. The previous jacket had accompanied me on trips to many countries (including Costa Rica in the rainy season), camping trips, and boating in some pretty miserable weather keeping me dry to (almost) the end. I love the extension on the hood that helps to keep the rain off my face and the pit zips that help me stay cool in humid weather. FYI: I am a woman, but prefer the men's rain jackets as they are longer, and keep the rain from dripping down my butt.

Fabulous Price Performer

Marmot willingly - awesome customer service - replaced a 7 year old jacket that was delaminating around the upper shoulders. The new XL was a trimmer fit than my first. The replacement was stolen and I ordered an XXL replacement. I ordered another PreCip simply because it's a great, light, around town, packable jacket that sheds water like a duck! I tried a Patagonia Shadow once but it wasn't tailored like the PreCip - a jacket, with a comfortable collar. I'm sure the fancy $350 jackets "breathe" better and may be more waterproof for extended back country wear, but you simply cannot beat this jacket for the features and price.
Tom at Campmor on 06/06/2012

Good rain/windy gear

I use the Precip as a waterproof/windproof shell over a Marmot Reactor Hoody middle layer over a Nike Combat Dry-Fit baselayer when nordic walking for 12-16 miles at about 3.0-3.4 mph on overcast/likely to rain and moderately cool days (38F-50F). I regulate the heat and also the vapor buildup inside the Precip shell by opening the Pit-Zips just so. The just described base/middlelayer/shell combo is just perfect: not too hot, not too cold, no stickiness from sweat, and most importantly, no interference with the arm movements. I do notice that a fair amount of water droplets clinging to the inside the Precip shell, probably due to its waterproof nature.

Negative Reviews:

I hate this jacket! I took it on a weeklong backpacking trip this past summer. It rained for two days on the trip, so I really put this jacket to the test. Epic fail. First of all, the jacket soaked all the way through. Also, it took forever to dry out! We stayed in shelter one of the nights it rained and I was able to hang my wet gear over night. Everything dried out, but this jacket. Even my boots were dry in the morning, but not this stupid jacket. I have other stuff from Marmot, and have no complaints. So maybe I got a lemon with the Precip Jacket. But, I haven't really depended on any of it as much I did this jacket. So my experience with this jacket has ruined the Marmot for me as a whole. My advice, pass on Marmot gear.

Epic Fail

I don't usually write product reviews but I am so unhappy with this jacket that I felt like I needed to write one as a public service. I love Marmot and I have many items that I am happy with but this jacket just doesn't hold water, literally. We own 3 of them as I bought one each for my wife, my son and myself. I have, at some point, worn each of them. I have never once stayed dry. My most recent experience was this weekend on a 3 day hike of the Catskill Escarpment Trail. It was raining to start, but after 5 miles I removed the jacket and was soaked through all layers with water running straight down my chest! Not at all a waterproof shell!
DANIEL at Moosejaw on 09/30/2012

Not as large as advertised

This product was advertised as a "generous fit to go over a fleece." I ordered a large instead of an extra large because of this. It is actually too small. The hood was advertised as "roll up with an integral collar." To me, that means that the hood will store in the collar. It does not. Not at all happy with my purchase.
Bill at Campmor on 04/04/2012

have one over a year, went with it to 5-6 daily over 10K \ twice up to 5 days / 85K , hikings. dissapointed. not very comfort. does not stop wind in hard desert cold windy weather- u feel as if wind gets through. waterfroof yet u still get soaked. not very good desigh. does not worth baying.

tzup301904 at Backcountry.com on 12/25/2012

Not waterproof

This jacket is not waterproof at all! Seams are poor at sleeves and are soaked all the way through in a light rain. I used it about six times in light rain and waterproofing was gone. I would waterproof except I paid to much and claim was completely false!! Will not buy marmot again.
Will at Mountain Gear on 10/10/2012

Defective out of the bag

When I tried to put the jacket on, I couldn't get my arm through the right arm opening. Upon further inspection I noticed the sleeve was glued/attached to itself. So when I tried to put it on, the inner waterproof membrane tore holes where it was glued together.

Used this jacket once and after about an hour in the rain the shoulders were damp and wetting through. Returned it immediately after that trip. Avoid this one guys.

Neutral Reviews:

For the money, the Precip does the job but it's the kind of jacket you keep in your trunk as an emergency piece or in a golf bag or in your boat etc. You get the picture. Yes it will keep you relatively dry from the elements but you're going to be soaked from the condensation. It doesn't breath very well. Bottom line is if you want rain gear that will work during any kind of physical activity ... spend the money and get Gortex or perhaps some of the higher end DWR finishes offered by top brands like Marmot, Mountain Hardware, The North Face ETC. You get what you pay for when it comes to rain gear.

Good but not great...

Like the fit and waterproof qualities, but there are a few things that made me return it.1. The primary reason is that the hood is not a true 2-way adjustable hood. Every time I turned my head I found myself staring at the inside of my hood. Thought the velcro strap on the back would do the trick but it didn't.2. The cords that adjust the sides of the hood make it difficult to close the velcro storm flap over the top of them.3. I couldn't stand the velcro on the pockets! It would catch on my sleeve every time I put my hands in the pockets. You know, it's the little things in life...

As mentioned, a good scenario for using this jacket would be a "just in case" scenario where even light precipitation is expected. Summer backpacking?
I use this on rainy days to get from the car to the front door.
I wore it on a hike in the rain once (Humboldt County rain) and after about 3 hours it was beginning to leak through. I value this as a learning experience, and for my more exposed adventures such as multi-day backpacking I will be purchasing gore-tex.

Worked well until it wore out

I like the light weight. It was waterproof and breathes adequately. The only problem was that after a year or so the inner lining delaminated in some places, especially the seams and around the neck. I have a friend that is happy with his. So durability perhaps is the only issue. I get out 60 days a year and live in the rainy Pacific NW.

This jacket is great for the first 1-2 years but then the inside starts peeling and its all downhill from there. I work outdoors so good rain jackets are rare. The fit is nice however and for the price, I'm ok with having to replace it every couple years.

bought a new precip jacket to replace the old one and fount out that the sleeve of new jacket is longer than the older version. Unfortunately the previous one fits me better.
