Great pants

This is my second pair of scree pants. The water repellence is reasonably short-lived (like most thinner soft-shell material), but that is my only real complaint about these pants. I broke my first pair in by wearing them on a week-long canoe trip across lakes and portages in Canada, and they were better than I could have expected. Many fabrics claim to be "flexible," but these pants are actually flexible enough that they move with you rather than sliding over you. There are elastic cords that can be tightened in the cuffs to keep them down over your boots as well. Usually this would just pull up and off the boot when walking or climbing, but the strechiness of the pant prevents this.

The most impressive aspect of these pants is the durability. On my initial trip we were faced with several portages through brush and heavily wooded areas. Given the light weight, breathability, and flexibility of the pants I did not expect them to offer much protection... These pants are nearly as effective as my jeans at protecting my legs. I don't know how, but they definitely get the job done.

Comfort zone is probably from 30-75 degrees F, and can be extended significantly below freezing with a base layer under them (they amazing breathable and warm at the same time with a good layer under them).

Overall, they look good, feel good, and perform extremely well. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a high performance pant, so long as they are not required to keep you dry through heavy or extended downpours.

Perfect! so far

I bought these to complement a pair of North Face convertible pants that I've used extensively for summer hiking. The TNF's are great for summer days that start cool and then warm up since the legs zip off. They're light and cool but not terribly weatherproof and don't have great range of motion (non-stretch nylon). I'm expecting these Marmot Scree's to be perfect for cooler days, variable weather and scrambling up peaks where the stretch fabric will provide great range of motion. Just received them today and they appear to be exactly what I wanted. I'm 6'4" 175 lbs, 33" waist 34-35" inseam so ordered the 34 Long. Fit is true to size and exactly what I expected. If anyone made a 33" waist I'd love them, but they usually don't so I have to go up to 34". Since the Scree's have an elasticized waist (plus belt loops) they accommodate 33" or 34" well. I may even try them for some spring alpine touring ski days even though they're not a ski pant and don't have scuff guards. I can't comment yet on whether they're durable or how well they breathe and shed wind/water, but based on the fabric I think they'll do great.

Great for Summer Climbing

I bought for summer climbing in the 35-65 degree range of temperature and it works great. I wore last week up Wedge Mt, B.C. It was 46 on the glacier as we roped up, and about 70 when we got back to camp, and it was neither too hot or cold. The waist was large. I bought a 36" and traded for 34. My pants are normally 36, and I haven't lost much weight. The 34 is still slightly loose, so I added a web belt, and it's perfect. I wear a belt with all my pants. The material is strong. We climbed 2,000' of rocks and I banged my shins and knees with no damage to the pants. They look good enough to wear around town casually too.

Proven performance

These pants arrived just as Hurricane Irene hit. I spent hours in horizontal wind driven rain wearing the Marmot Scree. I couldn't be happier on all accounts. The fabric is "waterproof" breathable and non restricting. I had great freedom of movement. Pants have well designed pockets. I like the belt loops to accommodate custom fit and to add belt accessories. These pants look great in black so I can wear shopping on foul days. I think these pants will be a great addition to my XC ski apparel.

Surprised

Love these pants. Bought them on sale because....well, they were on sale. Ended up loving them. They are my go to for ice climbing this winter, favored over a more expensive competitors brand. Breath nicely but block the wind also. Was climbing in high teens with just a mid weight thermal base and my legs did not get cold....not even sitting in snow. Nice and stretchy for high stepping. Will be used for rock climbing, winter hiking, snowshoeing, ice skating, break dancing, and pole vaulting.

An awesome lightweight pair of pants for almost any activity.

Marmot's done it again. From shoveling the driveway to high altitude climbs, these pants have held up. They provide an excellent range of motion while staying slim (not about baggy clothing) and let you move fast in any conditions. The waist fits well with or without a belt, and the new ankle zippers seem like a great addition to the product (I have an older design/pair).Probably the best you can do if you aren't looking for anything insulated or super-waterproof (these won't be).

Great Pants

Found these pants after trying Patagonia Guide pants which I couldn't get in my size. These are half the price and do fine as backcountry wear. They are windproof and also warm on cold & windy days.No need for long johns till the temp is below 25*.I even slept in them and they didn't wrinkle at all.Great price although I wouldn't pay full price for them. The size runs kinda strange you may want to order 2 pair and return the ones that don't fit.
Treeman51 at Campsaver.com on 03/03/2013

My new favorite pants!

These pants are slim fitting and just stretchy enough to be worn outdoors or around town. They've shed rain quite well and I'm eager to try them in the snow this winter. The gusseted knees make climbing over obstacles a cinch and the elastic around the waistband keeps them in place. I just wish the zippers on the front pockets opened the other direction. It would make them a little easier to get into in my opinion.
Tyler at SummitHut.com on 10/10/2010

Great 3 season pants

I ordered the 30 " inseam to match my usual dress pants and they fit well. Great for fall, winter hiking, snowshoeing and not bad for a ski tour either. No gaiters but with the calf zip and the elastic draw string they gibe a tight seal over my Scarpa Maestrales. For some fat boot cuffs you might want gaiters. A bit light for heavy storms, deep cold and high ridge top winds in mid winter.

The Best Pants I've Ever Owned

These pants rock. They're the perfect cool weather/winter outdoor pants. They're water resistant, very stretchy, which is nice for flexibility, and hold up to everything.

After several days of backpacking, hiking, climbing, and generally putting them through the ringer, they show absolutely no signs of wear.

My only (and I mean only!) complaint is that Marmot needs to make them in more colors- Tan/Coyote/Brown would be awesome.

Negative Reviews:

Poot fit

I purchased this product to use as a backcountry XC ski pant. Not knowing how these fit, I ordered a sz 32 and a sz 34. The 32 is undersized and extremely snug, more like a 30, and the 34 is oversized, baggy in the legs and seat, and has a too-long 34" inseam. The cost of tailoring and alterations was too high to justify the expense of keeping the pants.
Dave at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 02/02/2013

Surprisenly wide and long for size

I wear usually the size W35/L30, but bougt the size W34/L30. The pants are looking as W38 and two sizes longer! They are very wide in any place: in waist, in legs. Pant are also heavy and bulky... gonna return them.

Marmot Scree Pants

I planned to use these as a cold weather climbing and xcountry pants; however, I did not like the fit so I returned them. I am 6'1 170 and ordered a medium long- good length but much too snug in the hips and butt, too much like tights for me. Overall decent softshell pants for the price, nothing special though.
