Merrell Maipo

Men's Footwear > Hunting & FishingRated: 5 by 27 reviews.

Rock/Creek Outfitters

The Waterpro Maipo Shoe by Merrell is like having suction cups on the bottom of your feet when canyoneering, portaging rapids or simply rafting the Chattooga.  Either way the Waterpro Maipo has a mesh upper that drains automatically through ports in a micro mesh upper keeping your feet from standing in pools of water.  With anything that gets wet, there is always the possibility that bacteria and molds can grow inside the shoe, but with the Maipo, it has an antibacterial footbed to help eliminate that problem.  The sole is heavily sipened to give you superb traction on wet surfaces and softened chevrons for land and dirt.
A great anywhere water shoe that gives you support while offering traction on slippery surfaces.

The comfort, light weight, and well-ventilated nature of these shoes led me to buy another pair after my first pair wore out in 2-3 years. My feet easily sweat and these are the best shoes I have found to mitigate that problem. I wear them practically every day for morning walks on pavement and graded surfaces, shopping, recreating, and relaxing or doing light chores around the house. When temperatures fall below freezing (only in the dead of winter in Raleigh), I usually opt for warmer walking shoes. One weakness in their construction are the retaining straps that hold the laces together at the top with the lower portion of the shoe. These are what wore out first in my first pair. They are likely to wear out more quickly if the shoes are used for hiking on rough trails. But for me the comfort of these shoes very much outweighed the wear and tear on the straps.

I'm typically a 10-1/2, but sometimes a 10 and I ordered both sizes based on previous reviews: I went with the 10-1/2. I used the shoes to tour through Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras and they were perfect. The darker color made them acceptable for walking through cities and better restaurants without screaming athletic shoe, and the sole provided the need traction for hiking shallow river beds and trails in the cloud forests of Nicaragua's volcanoes. When they got wet the removable footbed dried quickly and they drained water well. I tried jogging in them and wouldn't recommend it for more than a mile or two if you're used to running in a more supportive (and shock absorbing) running shoe. I also have the similar Salomon's and while they have the edge in styling, these have it in comfort. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Cool shoe - I am a nurse and wear these to work for my 13 hour shift. I got them because I thought if they were waterproof they might also be bodily fluid proof. They are very comfortable and easy to slip on. There is good traction. They are extremely AIRY; my feet stay cool and don't sweat in them. My only complaint is that they squeak A LOT. There is only man-made materials, no leather. This prevents water from ruining the shoe, but makes a horrible plastic/pleather rubbing noise when you walk. I've only had them a couple months but the noise is embarrassing already. Everyone has complimented how cool they look. I haven't worn them hiking so I can't comment on how they function as outdoor sport shoes, but for work they are great.

These are great casual summer shoes. They are lightweight and very comfortable. I wore them on a rugged 5-mile day hike in FDR State Park (central Georgia) and found them to be very stable on steep and rocky trails. I have not used them in water but they dry quickly after walking through dew soaked grass. As others have noted, they sometimes squeak when I walk but the squeak is not bad enough to cause a problem for me. Other reviewers have also commented that the lace retaining bands may wear through but I have not experienced this problem yet. My only complaint is that they are a little wide on my feet. I should have bought one size smaller.

Intense Comfort & Style

Rating:*****
Even though the intended purpose of these shoes is for water, I use them everyday. They didn't work great in the snow storm last week, but they are amazingly comfortable in hot weather, in water of course, and on any kind of rough terrain. I do a lot of handheld videography work, and these shoes are great for maintaining balance and good stature. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned, because they are light, stable, and grip well.

Worked great in the water, dries super quick, not the most durable, but this may have just been my pair. There is a strap that runs throughout the upper, looping back and forth that the lacing system is attached to. The mesh tore on mine where the strap is anchored near the ball of the foot. More traction and sturdier than a lot of water shoes, but still not solid I guess.

Merrell Maipos - These shoes are awesome. They hug my feet and are great for hot outdoor use. They do not dry particularly quickly as I had hoped, however, they are rugged and look even better in person. These run large, for the first time in years, I had to drop an entire shoe size from a 10 to a 9. Highly recommend these shoes.

My son loves these shoes! He goes to a boarding school with a dress code and he has to wear closed toe shoes with socks. He loves the olive/orange color (orange is a school color). They are very comfortable, and keep his feet warm and dry as he walks to class. We will buy more Merrells in the future from Zappos!

I recently purchased this shoe for my husband who is very hard to fit, size 15. The selection isn't always the best in his size, so he was happy to get a stylish sport shoe that fit and was very comfortable. The fit was true to size and the medium width was even roomy enough for his wide foot.

soft and comfy

Best thing I've found since my 15 year old Nike AGC's, the ones I wore out earlier this winter finally. For street walking, museum walking, everyday use, they are comfortable (I've a wide foot and tender soles) and good looking. I'm buying a second pair, just in case.

Major Design Flaws - I purchased these shoes about 6 months ago and they've already completely worn out. The webbing straps rub against the laces as well the cording that runs the length of the shoe, causing fraying. At first this rubbing made the shoe squeak with each step, which was mostly just annoying. Now the webbing has broken in the same spot on both shoes (where it crosses the cording at the arch.) Both times, it's happened while I was out someplace, and I had to tie the ends together in order to go about my day. I've had to keep wearing these because I can't afford to replace them, and now the strap and laces are starting to wear through where they cross. Looks like I'll have to find the money somewhere because now I can't afford NOT to replace them. I don't wear this shoe in the water nor would I want to. Every time I step on smooth, wet surface, I slip. I owned the previous version if this shoe, and it didn't have either of these problems. Changes to the design did NOT improve this item.

After owning two pairs of Merrell Waterpro Ultra Sport (no longer made) I went for the similar-looking and less expensive Maipo's. Mistake. They are not half the shoe the Waterpro Ultra Sports are. The various "rigged" laces fray and rip easily. But the biggest problem is the squeak or creak the lacing makes. Unbelievably embarrassing; impossible to wear indoors where others can hear you. The sound could be recorded and used as a special effect noise for an old, wooden sailing ship. I loved, loved the Waterpro Ultra Sports. I have stopped wearing them. Why, oh why, Merrell, did you stop making the far superior Ultra Sports?

I purchased two pair of these shoes, and absolutely loved them. For a month or so. Shortly afterwards, one of the shoes' lace retention straps broke, rendering it uncomfortable and non-supportive. I switched to my backup pair, and both of those shoes suffered failures. The nylon straps that hold the laces in place are a terrible design, and quickly make the shoes unwearable. It's a shame, given how comfortable they are!

Don't buy them - I had a prior model of this shoe that I liked very much, so I order another pair of the current model. However, after just 2 months of very light wear, the straps through which the laces run broke making the shoes unusable. I do not recommend them.

Designed as a water sports shoe - These shoes are sold in some specialty stores as watersports shoes, such as canyoning, wet hiking, etc. Well, 2 months into using these shoes on various and extreme conditions, gotta say my review is mixed. First, they are very comfy, provided good airflow during hot weather and look good overall. On light trail hikes, the cushioning is quite good, the grip acceptable with their Vibram soles. On the wet, I had two less than OK experiences. In river conditions, the shoe holds Ok, but has not provided lots of grip on rocks, large or small, when in action. On saltwater (used these to protect also my feet when fishing on reefs - with some light wading), they did not provide enough grip and tend to collect lots of sand and debris. After 15 mins, you'll start collecting open sores and scratches around the contact points. On the flipside, not sure if they are other shoes that can protect better for these kind of uses, but at least they provided my feet some level of protection...

Great Shoe with a Big Design Flaw - Let me start by saying I love this shoe. It is lightweight, comfortable and great in and out of the water. This shoe would be a home run except for one big design problem. The criss cross webbing frays at the spots where it rubs against the black nylon guidelines. Every step you take causes the webbing to rub against these lines particularly in the mid sole area. Both my brother and I experienced this fraying problem within one week of wearing the shoes. At various websites, I have seen others complain about this.

So here\'s the skinny on these shoes: they are super light, breathe well, and are fairly comfortable, but they REALLY could use some more padding. Another thing that I\'m not thrilled with is how much they squeek when I walk in them. I though this would go way as I wore them down a bit, but they are still squeeking strong after almost a month of everyday use. Good pair of shoes, but had I to do all over again, I think I would have chosen a little bit sturdier shoe.

I like the shoe but it was a full size larger than the label indicates...I was disappointed that the smallest mens size 7 was too big and the womens colors are pretty lame. Had to send it back.
