Montbell U.L. Down Jacket -

Warmer than a heavyweight technical fleece and lighter than a pair of expedition gloves, the Montbell Women's Ultralight Down Jacket means cold-weather protection without a weight penalty. Other down jackets eat up pack space, but this sub-seven-ounce goose-down layer packs down to the size of a water bottle, leaving plenty of room for your backcountry gear or other travel essentials. A trim fit flatters your fit physique and also makes it stunningly simple to slip a hardshell over this cozy piece.

Down insulation is the insulation gold-standard. Feathers and plumules intermingle, producing a lattice-like network of open spaces and solid bits. Air gets trapped in the open spaces and creates a stalwart barrier between cold outside air and warm air your body kicks out. So long as the down stays dry, you stay warm. Part of the reason down dominates the insulation world is that the warmth-to-weight ratio can't be beat; you get a whole lotta warm for very little weight. This is where you start paying attention to the number associated with the fill-power. Specifically, that number describes how much space a single ounce of down occupies. Since down works by trapping air, it follows that the more space a single ounce of down takes up, the more air it can trap, and the more warm you stay on a per-ounce basis. By using 800-fill power down in this jacket, you stay warm without schlepping a full flock on your back.

Sewn through construction means the down stays in place so you stay warm all over. This jacket shakes off spits of rain due its DWR coating, and ripstop nylon stops snags before they start. Two zippered hand-warmer pockets give your paws a protected place to park. A stuff stack comes with this jacket for easy and organized packing.

This family of products from Mont Bell continues to delicately balance the characteristics that define reliable ultra-light apparel. For example, the U.L. Down Jacket weighs less than most cotton T-shirts, blocks a deceptive amount of wind, while compressing to the size of a 32 ounce water bottle. Specifically designed as a replacement for the heavy and bulky fleece garments used by many backcountry enthusiasts, the U.L. Down Series is “what you need” when warmth is critical, minimal weight is paramount, and space in your pack is at a premium.

Crazy light

I wear this jacket around the house, and also as an outer layer on cool (but not cold) days. It's very compressable and very light, so it's great to throw in your pack when you might need an extra layer. It provides about the same warmth as a sweatshirt, and it's water repellant. Is is very, very light, with some of that being due to a lack of features. For example, the fit is a bit boxy, and there's no way to cinch the bottom closed so wind doesn't blow up it, which makes it a lot less warm. I wish it were a bit longer, a bit more fitted, and I wish the arms were a couple inches longer too. (I am 5'5" and 115, and I own the small.) Also, after a couple months of light wear, the stretch material on the inside of the forearms is starting to pill. In retrospect, I would have gotten the slightly warmer version with the hood, I think the extra warmth would make it a much more versatile piece for me.

Light Weight Warmth

I've used this product as a light weight jacket for backpacking (I'm trying to lighten my load). Wish it was a little warmer, had a hood, and was a little longer in length. Best for late winter and early fall seasons, and low level activities.

Great Jacket

I have been looking for a light weight jacket for hiking and just out and about. This jacket is perfect. Too bad they discontinued the color.

Just Doesnt Get Any Better

Product is simply fantastic. How they improve on this product is beyond me. The warmth generated wearing this extremely light weight jacket is tremendous.
