Spiffy Looking Lightweight Hiking Boot
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Just tried on my new REI Montrails. [...] They are snug with my light but thick hiking socks on but I suspect that the 10's would be TOO big. They are almost like wearing high top sneakers. Very comfortable but protective. I am a 9.5 and I ordered a 9.5. I expect the boot to break in a bit or I will wear slightly less thicker light hiking socks or I will loosen the lacing a bit. I really like the look of the boot and they are light weight and comfortable. I really feel secure in them. I'd only change the lacing system to the new lock & load style rather than the old-fashioned tie system. But, maybe high tops are not made with the lock & load lacing? What do I know, I'm new to hiking? :-) Either way, the lacing system is cosmetic only and therefore not really an issue. I plan on trying them this Sunday in Upstate New York's Catskills. Highly recommend. | |

Better than the '08 version of the Hardrock Mid
| Rating: | ![]() |
I just got these after returning the '08 version of the Hardrock Mid. The '08 version began to come apart on the sides from normal trail abrasion after using about 4-5 times on long day hikes. The newer version seems like a much better light weight mid hiker. The materials seem tougher, the toe box is bigger, and it's lighter. Although the sole is thinner than previous versions (which I've seen people hate on for it's apparent lack of support), it seems to still be very supportive and offer great rock protection. I haven't put any miles on this pair yet, but if it dissapoints I'll be sure to update my review.

Excellent - but watch the sizing

| Just picked up these boots for use in colder climates in Europe this winter - for trail and town use; very comfortable and lightweight, and very well made. My feet have felt very comfortable in them so far and I'm not sure they will need much breaking in - I feel I could wear them on a long walk already. Plan to use them around the shopping malls and rainforest trails in Singapore for a while to see how they fair before taking them to Europe for the winter. I normally wear a UK 8.5 (US 9.5) and found that the Hardrock GTX need to be one full size larger to get the right fit in the toebox; funnily enough the extra size was just the right length too. Not yet tested in field conditions. | |

Good light weight hiker

These hiking shoes were pretty much what I was looking for - a fast lightweight water proof hiker. Only problem is I have a wide foot and after trying on two different sizes, I just couldn't make 'em work. Order at least a 1/2 size larger. If only Montrail would make a wider toe box like their old Continental Divide shoes.
