The Hardrock Trail Running shoe by Montrail is designed and constructed for running the toughest mountain races. Montrail, always producers of the top trail running shoes, has created a shoe with a full length TPU plate in the mid-sole of the shoe that gives you protection from rough terrain and provides support during long periods of running, hiking and walking. This midsole also provides pronation control and with its multidirectional lug design, you can get traction on all sorts of surfaces and directions. Updated for 2009, the Hardrock now has new materials that are even better for breathability, fit and comfort.
This shoe also comes in a Wide and fits D-EE feet.
The Montrail Hardrock, inspired by the Hardrock 100 ultra race, is built for the rough, rocky terrain of its namesake. Providing the utmost stability and traction, protection doesn't sacrifice agility, flexibility or weight. It's versatile enough for quick runs or long hikes thanks to its platform design. Aggressive lugs let you plow through dirt and mud with traction. With a wider midsole and molded protection plate—sculpted for flexibility during forward motion—it protects the bottom of your foot from bruising. The firm heel counter holds you steady. Designed with a metatarsal gel pad for cushion in the forefoot, and a high-density medial post, Hard Rock helps prevent pronation (and turned ankles). Webbing strips and synthetic overlays in the upper provide killer support. Using an IntegraFit™ last, these shoes feel like they're custom made. Montrail even used style cleverly with embossing that doubles as abrasion protection so they last longer.
Inspired by the Hardrock 100 ultra race, the Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe excels on the rough, rocky terrain of its namesake. The Hardrock also works well on rugged dayhikes or fastpacking adventures. The shoe's multi-directional lugs give you added stability on those extra rough sections. Montrail updated the Hardrock this year with a Gryptonite sole for maximum traction in wet and dry conditions. Montrail shaved weight and fabric from the Women’s Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe without sacrificing one speck of durability of support. A combination of hydrophobic synthetic leather, mesh, and rubber makes the upper incredibly tough and very breathable as well. Montrail even added Gryptonite rubber outsoles for added traction on everything from rocks to logs to steep, loose scree.

Montrail Hardrock trail-running shoes combine the breathability and lightness of mesh with the security and durability of a protection plate.

The proven Hardrock is the ultimate ultra-runner… lighter, faster and flexible without sacrificing protection, support and stability for putting in the long miles.
Minimize painful stumbles and dangerous mistakes wearing Montrail's lightweight Hardrock trail running shoes with grippy, flexible outsoles and form-fitting, breathable uppers.

nice trail runners/light hiking shoes.
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I used this shoe to train for the Imogene Pass Trail Race in CO last year and it worked out pretty well for me--I never had knee/foot pain during my training or the race (lots of ups and downs on uneven trails). I have also used the shoe to do class 3/4 scrambling in the mountains and it gripped the rock quite well. The shoelaces are not the best, as they often come untied, and the bottom of the shoe wore out medium-quickly (quicker than I thought the bottom of a trail shoe should); however, it did last through a hard summer of training and a winter of lighter jogging. | |

Great All Around Shoe! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
These shoes are amazing!! They are very sturdy and stable but do not feel bulky or heavy. They did not require any significant break in time and are versatile enough to accommodate my city runs and hiking/trail adventures. They are well ventilated so my feet do not get overly hot or sweaty. One negative I've noticed so far is that the lace construction is not that durable. The loops holding the upper laces started to fray almost right away and this does concern me for the life of the shoe but so far has not caused any problems and everything is still in tact. Overall, I highly recommend them!

Wanted vegan Montrails
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The three qualities I was looking for in the trail running show were 1) trail running shoe, 2) Montrail brand, 3) totally synthetic materials (I am vegan). This was one of only two Montrail trail running shoes that were synthetic, and the other one didn't come in my size. So, I was kind of limited and would have prefered a higher quality montrail shoe. however, this does seem to be working out fine. By the way, they fit fine b/c I ordered a 1/2 size larger than I normally wear, and I ordered a wider shoe than I normally wear. Make sure to do the same! | |

Love the Hardrock | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The Hardrock is my favorite all around trail shoe. It's very supportive and absorbs impact well on rocky trails. Feels great on fast smooth trails as well. I usually run road-to-trail from my house, and they do just fine for me on short road stretches. I overpronate a little, and used to run with an orthotic, but no need to with these. I got a lot of life out of my first pair of Hardrocks, and now that I have a new pair, I'm using the original ones for long day hikes. I'll stick with this shoe as long as Montrail keeps making it. | |

my new trail runners! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
Just got these a couple weeks ago and love them. Went for a nice long hike and they were perfect. It was all trail, some single track smooth dirt then some scrambling up some pretty steep terrain and they ruled it! I love that these are pretty stiff for how comfy they are. I feel really solid and stable in these shoes. The mesh keeps them a cool. I had to cross the river in 'em and it really didn't take long for them to dry out. I'll for sure buy these when the new ones wear out!

The best trail running shoe...
| Rating: | ![]() |
...I've ever owned. Period. Not only is this shoe supportive on the arch and ankles, but it is also super lightweight for its class and has great traction. I used to have problems with ankle-rolling, but with these shoes I'm able to run confidently over mud, gravel, water, even rocky downhill slopes. My only complaint was that I had to order a 1/2 size up from my normal shoe size. If you are like me and waver between a half size, order a half size up from your normal largest size.

These run 1/2 size small!
| Rating: | ![]() |
I do not size up a 1/2 size in my running shoes, so I just ordered these shoes in a 7.5 (where I usually wear a 7) & they fit great. Compared to 2 other pairs of 'trail runners' I have these have the beefiest sole-I can barely feel the sharp, pointy rocks we have here in UT when going downhill. (Since Montrail was purchased by Columbia these shoes haven't changed in the way they fit compared to some other Montrail models.)

| I've been dealing with plantar fasciatis and was looking for supportive shoes aside from my running shoes - these shoes helped ease my pain in about 3 days - no joke. much better than my running shoes. i wear them as daily shoes, but look forward to starting to jog again with them and doing some light hiking. so happy! they do run 1/2 size small - i'm an 8 ad the 8 1/2 fits great. | |

I do buy this product again and again
| Rating: | ![]() |
| These shoes are the best motion control running shoes for people like me, who have alot of feet problems. These shoes are the only reason I can still run 6 to 10 miles usually 5 times a week. The only part of the shoe that wears down is the inside ankle part..then its time for a new pair cause my feet start rolling in again. But thats alot of miles...so I get my moneys worth | |

Montrail Hardrock running shoes -good deal!
| Rating: | ![]() |
Your website is great, and I received my order fast. I bought these shoes on recommendation from a woman runner. This is the first pair of athletic shoes/boots I ever bought that fit my feet, read "no blisters and no pain", and I can walk through sand washes, dirt and gravel and never has one bit of sand gotten in my shoes! My feet are so happy I even wear them to work.

Sturdy but uncomfortable
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I planned to use the shoe for light trail walking (dirt/gravel/partially paved) four to five times per week, but it has turned out to be one of the most painful athletic shoes I have owned in recent memory. The sizing in terms of length and overall fit seemed to be good for both feet, although there is some pressure on top of the big toe of the right foot when I walk. My biggest complaint is that I experience a lot of strain and pain in the inner arches and up the inner ankles every time I walk in these shoes. After wearing the shoes a few dozen times, hoping to break them in, there is no change. This shoe just does something serious to my feet that I can't figure out. I have a heavy footfall, but I do not tend to over or under pronate. The cushioning seems to be adequate, the shoes lace up securely, and they seem to be a pretty rugged. They are showing virtually no signs of wear in the upper. But after an excruciating 2.5-mile walk today, I have decided to give these shoes away. Don't hang on to these shoes as long as I did with pain - if they hurt at first, return them right away!!! | |

Missing the old Hardrock model
| Rating: | ![]() |
Previously, I owned a pair of Montrail Hardrock bought in early 2007. I loved them. During two years I hiked volcanos in tropical rain forest, the Appalachians, ran on trails and asphalt. They fit perfectly my feet (a bit narrow and overpronated). Althugh I am a size 8, I used a 8.5.

I like the stability of this shoe for trails but my feet become incredibly sore shortly after I begin my exercise. I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is. Has anyone else had the same experience?

| These shoes are attractive, but are no where near close to true size. I ordered larger than usual, and had to send them back immediately. | |

good and bad. | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
I've only run a few times in them, so they are not "broken in", but I've found with my other running shoes that they don't really need much breaking in. I ordered a half-size up, which I tend to do with all my running shoes. They have nice tread for rocky trails. They feel stable and cushiony. But the balls of my feet get sore after running for say, 20-30 minutes. It's worse on my longer foot, which makes me wonder if I should have ordered a full size up instead. It almost feels like the shoe is too narrow for me, but I haven't quite pinned it down. I don't have wide feet that I am aware of. It's a little disappointing because these shoes are nice otherwise but I'll probably have to use them for short runs unless I can find a better insole that helps the situation or new lacing style that eases pressure.

Disappointed but an ok shoe
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I researched many shoes before deciding on the Hardrock based on the raving reviews online- I needed a trail runner that would put up with muddy trails during runs, and also a good walking, water-resistant shoe I can take with me when I travel. I have only ran in this shoe (not traveled with it yet)- and every 3 minutes on every run, I have to stop to re-tie the laces! I plan on buying different laces but given that I've had many running shoes in the past that have never had this issue, it is a bummer that I have to deal with the inconvenience of buying different laces! Besides that, an ok shoe so far. I am glad I read online to buy a half size bigger, as the bigger size fits good. | |

love/hate relationship

| I've been wearing Hardrocks as pretty much my sole running shoe since 2004 as they are one of the few high volume ~low arch shoe to fit my orthotics. As I used to be an ultrarunner, I've put hundreds of trail miles on these shoes. Unfortunately, I've seen the quality decline since Columbia took over Montrail and the fabric/foam inside tends to wear quickly. In talking to other runner/climbers I know I am not alone in this observation. That being said, they are grippy, comfortable, and high stability, perfect for long runs on technical trails. I also have a 2008 pair and they seem to be a bit more narrow that the old style. I am currently exploring other options. | |

beefy trail shoes | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| There seems to be a size difference in the 2007 to 2008. The 2007 toe box seemed somewhat cramped but the 2008 felt roomy, almost too big. The arch of the shoe seemed to start too proximal to the heel causing arch strain [...]. I have neither flat feet nor high arches. I'm sure these are great trail shoes for some--they received rave reviews in runners world. It is very difficult to get trail runners here in Florida so it's definately a gamble when trying a new brand especially via online purchasing. | |

Too SHORT | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| It's difficult to say if I'd like this shoe. It doesn't fit my foot. I hesitate to go a full size up in a shoe, somehow, it seems the fit is compromised at that point. I think it would be a great stable, comfortable, if a little heavy, shoe if the fit was right for you. | |

I tried these and have used them on a regular basis. I like the stability and weight. I probably wont buy again because my feet hurt in a way that they never have before. These shoes are not soft and never really "broke in" although I used them consistently.

| Not as good as their older hardrocks. These are much stiffer, not good for running. But good for hiking. Also, increased break in time, the old ones had no break in time - which is how a good shoe is supposed to be. | |
