As winter turns into spring and the warm weather returns, we see lots of customers in our store who know that they need a tent for their backpacking adventures, but aren't sure exactly which one to get. Those customers leave with a Mountain Hardwear Drifter series tent in hand more often than any other model. The Drifter owes its popularity not to futuristic materials or crazy architecture - but rather to good, old-fashioned value. There are lots of dome tents in the world that take the same general shape of the Drifter, but its mix of quality craftsmanship, pleasing aesthetics, and essential features combine to make it the most popular tent in our inventory.

New for 2013, the Drifter 3 DP model features Mountain Hardwear's DryPitch ™ configuration, which allows the tent to be set up fly-first in the rain, keeping the interior of the tent dry. The included footprint allows you to set up the tent in three different configurations: rainfly only, tent body only, or the complete tent.

Great Couples Tent

I bought this tent to replace my original tent I had owned for a really long time. I was somewhat reluctant to buy a new one, the one I had worked fine the only downfall being it was EXTREMELY difficult to pitch in the dark. Being a weekend warrior I usually head out Friday night so wherever I go it's generally dark when I set up. This tent couldn't be easier to pitch. I got it in the mail Friday afternoon and headed out for a weekend trip, probably dumb not to set it up first but I was in a rush. I was so satisfied with how intuitive the set up is, and the reflective tabs are particularly helpful at night. I have now officially had this tent in all sorts of weather conditions. I have camped on beaches, tropical areas (actually had it IN a tropical storm), in colorado cold weather, fall, rain, and hot weather. It is extremely sturdy and durable and it does not leak a drop. We got stuck in tropical storm Beryl last year in South Carolina and did not feel worried about water coming in. I bought the footprint on sale and while it helps protect the floor it seems like it does a better job of keeping water trapped under the tent when it does rain. I woke up at three in the morning feeling as if I was in a water bed. The only con I have would be the size-it is a three man tent however I can't picture that being too comfortable for car camping or base camp. For backpacking I could see it to cut down on weight but for any other purpose it's really only good for two people, a dog, and a couple of packs. Although I have only tried it out with my boyfriend and dogs so I guess that's at your call. The dual vestibule feature is really handy, and it is also a good size for a dog if your dog farts in the middle of the night. It also has a couple of pockets on both sides, and a canopy for placing items in. I couldn't be happier with this tent! It probably could stand to be a little lighter for backpacking purposes, but I haven't done any solo trips so splitting up the tent doesn't make it so bad.

Fun tent!

I was on the search for tent I could head out with my friends to Tahoe for the weekend - camp and enjoy the outdoors. I really liked the price, amazed with the room, appreciated that there was two doors and most of all that it was easy to set-up!
