Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 Reviews:

Reviews:

This is a great sleeping bag!

I have the long version (84 inches by 31 inches) and it weighs in at 2 pounds, 7.1 ounces. It has 22 ounces of 800 fill down, which both allows it to be warm and compress to a small package for backpacking. The bag I have may be an earlier version as the zipper is only 49 inches long, and the bottom 36 inches of the bag has no zipper. I believe the zipper on the current version of the bag goes just about all the way to the bottom. The bag packs down to about 7 inches across, and 9 or 10 inches tall when put in a 10 liter compression sack, and then lofts up quickly and nicely when taken out.

After only previously owning synthetic bags, I find this down bag to be tremendously versatile, handling a wide range of temperatures. I have stayed warm with the temperature below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and also been able to use it when the overnight low was above 60 degrees F. I wore base layers when it was cold, and turned the bag upside down (so the thicker down was underneath me and the thinner down was on top) and left it unzipped for warmer nights. Packing is so much easier when I only need one bag to be comfortable regardless of what the weather serves up.

I greatly appreciate the baffles that insulate the shoulders, as they really help to keep me warm when it is cold out. The zipper baffle also does a good job preventing heat loss. The hood is well designed, and I am able to use it when it is cold out. With other bags I find that when I am asleep I pull my head out of the hood and tuck it into the bag. That hasn't happened with the Phantom 15. The zipper has functioned well, with no issues regarding snagging or getting stuck.

Unless you have concerns that you will get your sleeping bag wet, I would recommend this bag. I have used it for both car camping and backpacking and it has done a great job for me.

Great Bag

Great bag. Perfect for higher-altitude 3-season backpacking. I've spent about 20 nights in this bag from spring to fall, and have never been cold. Minimal down leakage and I really like the draft collar. Had to wash it due to a cat pee incident (somehow they know to find your most prized possessions and pee on them) and I can personally attest to how difficult it is to saturate this bag with water, even in a bathtub. However, once it gets soaked through, it will stay that way for a long time.

All the materials are extremely lightweight, so you won't want to be dragging this bag across sticks and stones, but your back will be thanking you the next time you are slogging up a hill. It's very light and packs down very small.

Almost took a star off due to the price being out-of-market but that's not really the bag's fault. One other quibble: the zipper does stick, like with all sleeping bags. This can make it a little claustrophobic if you have it zipped up all the way.

If you can deal with the price tag, or you get it at a discount like I did, buy with confidence. Especially if you are trying to reduce your weight and bulk.

nice warm bag

normally i would wait a while to put a product to good use before reviewing but since there are no reviews out on this bag i thought i'd write one up.

i just bought this bag and took it on a ski mountaineering trip in the Deltas (a sub-range of the Alaska Range) the first weekend in April. it packs very small (about 7x10 inches) and could have been compressed even smaller if i had really wanted to yank on the compression straps.

i slept in the bag on a z-lite pad in a igloo that we built. the night's low temperature was in the high teens. wearing all my clothes including a down jacket and down boots i was plenty warm sleeping in the bag.

the bag is easy to zip/unzip with a well designed collar and hood. there is sufficient room inside the bag to fit my water bottle, boot liners, gloves etc. i'm 6'4 and the long bag was perfect for me.

so far i am very pleased with it. i only gave it 4/5 stars since it is expensive and it hasn't yet stood the test of time.

The warmth to weight ratio on this bag is downright ridiculous! It lofts up really well, and is very comfy. Gripes: The zipper track is annoying. On the down pull it constantly snags the nylon guard. On the up pull it munches on the baffles! The only way I've got it to work is to pull the zipper track tight with one hand while pulling the toggle with the other. Not bad when you're out of it but tricky when you're in! (or it's dark.... or you need to pee....) The cut is narrow tapering in at the neck. Good for reducing weight/air volume, but makes it even harder to work the snaggy zip.

This is a great sleeping bag! It's warmth to weight ratio is unsurpassed, and all without cutting down on the needed stuff to make this work. It's loft is amazing, and the foot box is ultra comfy. Along with the collar and hood! The only growing concern I have is that a see a down feather almost every time I use it come out. There aren't any tears so it comes from the seams. Nothing too alarming though, as there is plenty of it to go around!
