Cute, warm sweater from a fine brand

Rating:****
This isn't like my hiking and mountaineering gear from Mountain Hardwear. Indeed, it isn't even much like its zip-style cousin sweater with the same name, also offered by Mountain Hardwear/STP. That said, it's a great sweater for kicking around town or taking on your next hike or trip to a stormy beach. The sweater fits fairly well, but the fabric doesn't feel like any other fabric blend I've ever worn. Kind of thin, but with good stretch and a trim profile. The cut isn't much like the zip-front cardigan (also called the Sarafin), and I was hoping for something that called attention to my waist a bit like the other Sarafin does. It also hits me at my widest point of my hips, but perhaps others with longer torsos won't have that problem :-). So, not perfect, but definitely a keeper. This garment is great for what it is: a pullover sweater in a fantastic color that will keep me toasty on drab, rainy days here in the PNW. The thumb holes (that's why the sleeves are as long as they are) are a neat nod to performance running gear. A solid purchase that probably keeps me looking more cute than vamp. I can live with that!

love this sweater!

Rating:*****

I've already bought two different colors, and it's only an extreme exercise in restraint that's preventing me from buying a third. i can wear it at work (it's that non-gear looking) or out on the weekend...it's very warm, but not so much so that it's oppressive for indoor wear. i probably won't use it as a technical layer, though...it seems a little bulky for that. i do think it runs a bit large (unlike most Mountain Hardwear gear)...i usually wear a small in most MH, but i got a better fit when i exchanged my small sarafin for an x-small. i have really sensitive skin and sometimes find this sweater a tad itchy, but it's nothing a light camisole doesn't solve. highly recommend the sarafin!

Perfect fall sweater!

Rating:*****
This sweater is sized better than some MH tops (for me); I find some of MH's tops to be boxy through the waist and hip. I am totally perplexed about the negative reviews of this item; it is neither itchy (in fact, it's soft and fuzzy inside), and sized particularly well. The other thing I love is that it has the warmth of a turtleneck without feeling so constrictive. I bought this in 2 colors, and plan to buy the 3rd. This is going to be a favorite sweater for fall/winter weekends, when I want to be warm yet look nice. And, of course, the thumb loops make bundling up easy and quick!

A soft feeling Sarafin sweater!

Rating:****
I loved how the wool did not feel scratchy nor itchy. The only "not-so-great" things about it were how the collar was a bit too high in that the edge reaches my chin and the sleeves were too long that i needed to roll up the end two times. Maybe the sweater is ideal for someone with a taller neck and longer arms, but these are small downfalls to this sweater as i really love it overall! It doesn't make you feel bulky and it fits just right with just a little room to feel loose in the chest and tummy area, which is exactly what i had hoped for.

Mountain Hardware Sarafin Sweater warm, comfortable

Rating:*****

The Mountain Hardware Sarafin Sweater is warmer than it looks. You can wear it to replace a jacket if the air is still, but it won't stop a breeze. It is soft but occasionally feels slightly itchy, so if you have sensitive skin you might want to wear it over a light bottom layer. I typically wear a 6-8 petite so the arms are a little long on me but would likely be perfect for anyone who wears regular sizes. The sizing on this sweater is slightly larger through the shoulders and mid-section than the Mountain Hardware Sarafin Cardigan, which is another great choice in this category.

Sarafin review

Rating:****
I can't wear most wool because of the itch factor. My favorite thing about this sweater is that while the outside is itchy-ish (not bad), the inside is felted or smoothed so that it does not itch, even up against my neck. My one con for this sweater is that the thumbholes are on the seam, which means they are positioned on the outside of the sleeve, and the sleeve must be twisted to use the thumbhole. But, the tall collar and the thumbholes make this a warm sweater to wear, especially when you spend all day typing on a computer.

Functional and Attractive

Rating:*****
Awesome sweater. The look of a wool sweater with the feel of a fleece on the inside. Tight knit with medium thickness, Picante is a really nice pumpkin color. This sweater isn't as fitted as other Mountain Hardwear tops in the torso, so size down or it will be a bit loose. The thumb holes make this sweater super functional, but the holes aren't big enough to look funny if you don't wear it that way. The collar might be a bit loose if you have a smaller neck, so take that into consideration. As usual, another great MH product.

LOVE IT!!!

Rating:*****
I LOVE this sweater. I am a stay @ home mom of 2 and this totally works for me. I bought the blue color and it the thumb holes are right up my alley. I walk the dogs, walk to the bus stop, shop, eat, breathe and almost sleep in this sweater. I used to dress GAP/JCREW (sale items) but hated the fact that the sweaters from those stores would be out of style or not wear/wash well but THIS sweater, I BELIEVE, is worth the money and will stand the test of time.

comfy and cute

Rating:****
Usually need a medium or large for Mtn Hardware to fit my bust, but this sweater has room for curves. It's fitted (but not tight) in a small and the sweater gets that sort of 'webbed' look under the arms when oversized. The sleeves are too long to wear without using the thumb holes, but perfect if you like that sort of fit. Ordered it in June, so it'll be a while until it's cold enought for me to wear and wash it. Looking forward to it -- very cute sweater.

My favorite sweater

Rating:*****
I just love these sweaters. I've had two since last year (last season's green and brown, respectively) and I'm ordering more. They're warm and comfortable, and they look great in any setting. The tailored fit and structured collar give them a look that's more refined than an ordinary crew neck, and works very well with a button-down shirt, yet they look perfectly right on the road or in the woods too. The material is good quality and seems very durable. I look forward to Fall just to wear these again!

Negative Reviews:

Contains wool.

Rating:**
Returned it immediately. My fault - I didn't read the product description as carefully as I should have. The sweater contains wool and to me it felt itchy, itchy, itchy. I don't remember how it fit, all I cared about was that it was itchy, itchy, itchy - but then again: I'm very sensitive to wool. Someone else may love the sweater.
Kaye at Sierra Trading Post on 07/13/2009

itchy

Rating:**
I was disppointed to see that the wool is very scratchy and itchy. Love the thumb holes, but I much prefer Icebreaker shirts with thumb holes. Merino wool isn't itchy at all.

love the fit but very itchy!!!!

Great if you have really long arms

Rating:***
This sweater is warm and a nice design - I like it, but the sleeves are WAY too long. I have normal length arms and the sleeves on the large are about 5" too long for me. I think it is meant for mountaineering where you pull the sweater down to your knuckles and insert your thumb into the hole at the end of the sleeve. I had to tuck the end of the sleeve under just so I could wear the sweater.
NAUT at Sierra Trading Post on 12/19/2007

Interesting sweater

Rating:***
I loved the color, details, and thumb loops. Unfortunately, if was a little short for my long torso, the sleeves were strangely wide (which I can see now in the picture) around the bicep, and the material stood away from the body, sort of like wearing a bell. I wanted so badly to like this sweater, but couldn't quite justify the odd fit.

Sarafin Mountain Hardwear sweater - titanium

Rating:***
I have the orange sweater and brown sarafin sweaters and love them both. I also ordered the titanium (gray) one.. which i really wasn't as happy with due to the bluish color with it. I wish there were more color choices
Anonymous at Altrec on 10/22/2009

Cute but small

Rating:***
Order a bigger size than normal. The medium fit okay, but you would need to put a tshirt under the wool sweater, which would make it too tight, and that doesn't even factor in washing it!
Social services at Sierra Trading Post on 07/25/2009

Attractive, but returned

Rating:***

The sweater is quite attractive and roomy, but I returned it due to extra long sleeves that I didn't want to turn cuffs on and the sweater is a bit scratchy.

This is a nice sweater, just more casual than I was looking for. The shape and fit were good and the material is nice.
