"Classic lumbar -- what is better?"
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I've used a couple versions of this bag over the decades and dragged them all over the world. The Mountainsmith Day works great in the mountains, or in the airport. Over the years, fabrics have changed, zipper pulls have changed, straps have been moved and simplified, but this bag is the real deal -- bombproof and, now, even made from recycled materials. Use it as a backpack with the optional Strapettes. It carries very, very comfortably as a lumbar bag, a backpack (with excellent waist strap, of course), or as a shoulder bag with the included strap. It's not as light as some ultralight stuff, but I think the comfort makes up for the extra weight. | |

Comfortable, roomy, simple.

| I was looking for a pack for more extensive day hikes and with the addition of the Mountainsmith strapettes, I found a pack for multi day lightweight treks. I like the simplicity of the inside and the bright yellow interior. Many companies make a big deal out of all of the cool organization pockets inside their bags but in fact I almost never make much use of them so the simple open design is more useful. The weight distributes well and in my test hikes I determined you can use this pack to carry in the low 20 pound range at least for the beginning of the hike. | |

Becoming my number one pack

| I use this bag to carry extra layer to the ballpark and to carry ham radio gear for hilltopping. With the strapettes it can really carry a heavy load of 12 volt batteries for a long afternoon of playing radio. This may well replace my 25 year old EMS daypack that still works well after many many miles; this has more versatile tie down options. | |

"Amazing Pack for Absolutely Everything"
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I got this pack for doing my field work, and since then I've used it for absolutely everything from running errands to hiking the dunes. It's got a super comfortable strap and is big enough to hold textbooks. With the interior pocket in the main compartment, it's easy to keep small things organized, too. All in all, very well designed and fun to use! | |

Unique and useful bag | |

| I have used this bag to bring extra layers to the ballpark, for airline travel, day hikes and to carry ham radio gear. Worn on waist, with shoulder strap and with strapettes (a must for heavy batteries). Adjusts easily for light or heavy, small or bulky loads. Gives my 25 year old EMS daypack a run for its money. | |

"Awesome pack for just about any use."

| This pack is great to use for anything. You can throw books in it or put a towel and some reading material for the pool. Mountainsmith is great quality stuff and you can't go wrong with this purchase. | |

| Took this on our Thanksgiving vacation to Trinidad. It went with us everywhere. It was able to hold my laptop computer as well. It's great for taking just about anywhere! | |

| "I own one of the previous versions of this fanny pack and really find it useful both for hiking and around town for soccer games, etc. My back isnt the best and this moves weight from my back to my hips. My original bag is tough, looking almost new after years of use. My brother has almost worn a bag out, but that was after 5-10 years of daily use. These are quality bags that dont compare with your cheaper back and fanny packs. I wanted a second bag to prefill for specific activities. I havent used the new bag that often, but it seams to be of a similar durable contruction. My only complaint or dissappointment would be with the shoulder strap. On the older bags the pad was sewn into the strap. On the new bag the pad can slide on the strap. This might make the pad/strap a little more versatile and easier to adjust, but I think the pad will potentially tear or rip over time. Mountainsmith also moved the internal hanging pocket from the back of the pack to the side with the external zippered pocket. I keep batteries in the small pocket and the weight is sufficient to pull the bag closed. When accessing the internal pocket I now have to remember to hold the bag by the front handle instead of the back handle, as Im used to with my older bag. This is a great bag for day hikes if you need to move weight from your shoulders and its good for shopping trips, and around town use too." | |

| "Best thing about this bag is how comfortable it is for my back! Also there are 4 ways to wear it: Waistbelt, shoulder strap(comfy!), double carry handles, or the shoulder strapettes which can and must be purchased separately here on eBags. I use it both for work and rereation- carrying plenty of stuff: files, two thermoses, some clothing, lunchbox, iPhone, iPod, and a bunch of small personal items. For this use - the bag works best when I use the shoulder strap or carrying handles. Wearing it as a lumbar pack with that much weight makes the bag sag badly and swing around. There is an easy solution to that. When I need to stablize the bag beyond the waist belt - I put on strapettes which you must purchase separately which make it work perfectly as a backpack. Really glad to have the strapettes! Get them! THe bag cinches down perfectly streamliining it for cycling or carrying on the train/plane, love the Pinon Green color, and how well made it seems. Excellent zippers, pockets, straps etc. I might get the Tour style next (slightly smaller) for low key runniing around and day hiking with less stuff. These bags are made beautifully. Just beware that if you fill it heavy - you probably wont like wearing just the waistbelt. Get those strapettes! I get complements about the looks and practicality of the bag -and I enjoy telling folks that the fabric is recycled! Highly recommended!" | |

| "Lumbar packs large enough to hold textbooks, a laptop, or lunch and a change of clothes are hard to find, but for someone who develops shoulder problems wearing backpacks, they are a godsend. I used a pack by UphillDown for 10 years and loved it. I like the fit of this one even better. I use mine for bike-commuting and for walking to the library or stores with my family. Also for lots of other occasional trips. Other pros: Shoulder strap helps with putting on pack, and then falls out of the way easily. Its comfortable enough for carrying the bag loose. All straps are easily adjustable. Water bottle pockets hold large bottles. Waist straps and bag shape distribute weight well. Straps from bag to waistband are independently adjustable allowing the top of the bag to be pulled in close to the back no matter how full the bag is. This makes it much more stable during wear. Nice zippers and compression straps. Cons: no large lumbar pack is as stable as a backpack during active wear. The strapettes apparently solve this, but Ive been perfectly happy without them. When walking, the loose straps and water bottle pocket elastics can brush your arms. Ive been able to tuck them out of the way, but its a little annoying. I think it would be a problem with any large lumbar pack unless you have a very broad back. I have to cover the pack during rainstorms." | |

| "I love the pack. Ive used it on three hikes so far and it works great. I able to carry water and supplies comfortably. Also, I purchased the strapettes to use with the pack. I would recommend getting the strapettes for the Day Lumbar Pack." | |

| I got this bag to replace my old Mountainsmith Cairn i think it was that got stolen a while ago. It's close but not quite / The bag holds quite a bit- including a laptop if you like, but the shoulder strap placement is a little awkward - too close together. | |
