MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter

I've backpacked in the California mountains for the past 9 years, and this is the best filter ever. I have carried pumps with paper cartdidges (never again) and I have carried MSR water pumps that have made excellant water and were easy to clean, but this new Autoflow was fantastic. We had a group of 7 and we were able to fill all our water bottles and get tents setup and meals prepared. There was a one-time learning curve about not putting the cap on the nalgene too tight (the air has to escape for the water to go in) and the same thing when backflushing the filter. Everyone wanted a turn using it and it is now back in the wilderness with a local Scout Troop, so I'll see how hardy it really is.

This is an awsome water filter! You fill the bladder, hang it up, and let gravity do the rest. I have found that the flow is no quite as high as advertised, but it will filter 4 liters in under 4 minutes. I have had no trouble backflushing the filter element. I also like the fact you can fill the bladder and yo don't have to fliter the water right then... you can have water on demand! Everyone who has seen mine in action has wanted one for themselves. The bladder can hold up to 6 liters of water, but only has markings for 4 liters. It can take some creative thinking to fill the bladder under some circumstances, but I have always been able to fill it. I would recomend this filter to anyone.

Great improvement here!

| Four of us just got back from 10 days in the southern High Sierra and we all agreed that this system is great! We had a Miniworks for backup just in case and we did not use it at all. This system is very simple to use. We found that we could always find a branch or rock to hang the reservoir on but sometimes you have to get the air bubbles out of the hoses...also we found that it worked better if you left the adapter loose on the Nalgene bottle so air could escape...other than that it worked perfectly, no downside that we could see. | |

Wow..Great filter! | |

| Got this for a small cabin with a shallow well, just for safety. It filters at least as fast as the specs say if not faster. Even the filtered water tastes a little better, tho it doesn't have a flavor filter. It's exactly what's needed for large amounts of clean water. One tip...when backflushing, use an old nalgene bottle & drill a small hole in the base of the bottle (it's hung upside down like an IV) so the water can flow out without creating a vacuum, otherwise it'll take half a day just to backflush. With the hole, it's 15 min at the most. | |

| Drinkable water in camp is no longer a half-hour chore by the stream. Great product. One down side: MSR recommends the user backflow the filter after filtering each 8 liters of water. Problem is that when using a Nalgene bottle or a camelbak, a sucton is formed and no liquid will reverse flow through the filter. I sent the system back to Cascade Designs and they drilled a hole in the "Universal Cap." This should fix issue for me, but I don't think a design change is soon planned. | |

"Great filter, as long as it doesn't freeze."

| Title says it all. Works well, great flow and comes with a bottle adapter that will allow you to filter water directly into most available containers. (I have used a Camelbak, a MSR Dromedary bag and a Nalgene; flawless on all three.) One big downside is that the filter element will be destroyed if you allow it to freeze. I live in the arctic and this is problematic. My solution: Take the filter module off and keep it in your jacket inner pocket. Overall great filter. | |

| Used on float trip in Alaska. Started water as soon as we decided on campsite. Had water when we were ready never had to wait(after: wood, tent, rafts, gear, game taken care of). While we never had to wait - not for those who need immediate access to water. Overall should be in every kit bag because it works while you are busy with other chores. | |

I just came back from 7 days in the Pasayten Wilderness in north cascades, this filter was my favorite piece of gear. It worked flawlessly - and made something that is usually something of a cold chore into something that took no time and no effort - it just worked in the background and there was water when I needed it.

leaks | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The product has a great deal of potential. Filters quickly, packs down, is not that heavy, and is fairly easy to clean. I have always carried the msr miox, which I love, but you don't have instant water. A friend bought the autoflow gravity filter. I tested it for him on a short overnight trip in the ADK's. One flaw was that the seal around the water gauge came apart. Not just a small leak. After a lot of duct tape over the entire water gauge it worked nice but still leaked. Don't buy, wait for the design to get better. | |
