MSR Groundhog Stake Kit

Hiking & Camping > Tent AccessoriesRated: ***** by 32 reviews.

Mountains Plus Outdoor Gear

It's hard to believe that one tent stake can be so much better than another, but the Groundhog is a great example. It's 3-sided, so it has more surface area to 'grab' the ground, making it more resistant to those big winds that will rip up other tent stakes. They are 7.5 inches long, and weigh just over 1/2 an ounce each. Each stake includes a loop of reflective cord so they are easy to remove from the ground.

"The best stake you will find, MSR FTW!"

Rating:*****
Excellent quality as usual with MSR stuff - The stake cuts through hard pack dirt well, the little ties have a reflective coating on them which is fantastic for letting people see them rather than trip over your tie downs and doing the rain dance on top of your tent at 3am. It holds its position with a firm grasp - it can take much more pressure than a simple wire stake. Its really amazing how much more "holding power" they have, I can't recommend them enough. This is my 2nd order of em! (friends have a way of.....borrowing them)

MSR Groundhog Stakes

Rating:*****

I bought these stakes because someone had warned me that when I purchased my MSR Hubba Hubba it would only come with 7 instead of 8. Unlike the other reviewers, the tent I recevied had all 8 stakes but I was glad I bought these in the end. Even though they are the same company, these are a much higher quality stakes and I prefer using these to the ones that were included. They are MUCH beefier but still very lightweight. It never hurts to have extra stakes so buy these!

"Great replacement stakes"

Rating:*****
Brought these as a replacement set after I either lost or bent those that were provided with my tent. They proved to be worth their weight in gold when a storm with hail and wind gusts blew through. Our tent held tight while we watched others blow away. They are easy to put in at a well-used state park campsite with hard packed ground. The reflective ties/pull outs were also a welcomed addition. No more tripping over the guideline stakeouts in the dark. Buy these.

"Moosejaw and Ground Hog solved my problem!"

Rating:*****
Used my Ground Hog Tent Stakes for the first time this weekend and boy do I love them. I have arthritis in my fingers and have always had a problem with the shepherd's hook stakes. No problem with the Ground Hogs. Light, durable and easy to get out with the cord on the end. Also, super easy to spot in the leaves! My suggestion would be to buy this product and do not use the stakes that come with your tent.

Near Perfect

Rating:*****

A great tent; loaded with features. The quality is outstanding. Light but solid. Double vestibules handle "a ton" of gear. Goes up in a flash and is designed and built for a nice taut fit. Fits two with plenty of room to spare. If sleeping three, make sure they are friends who don't roll around.

The color is so-so, but then we don't camp on the red carpet so Glam is not really an issue.

Go ahead, use your boot

Rating:*****

Will not bend when common sense tells me to use my boot to get this stake into the ground. I will never use the titanium / aluminum pegs again. Buy one set and you should not have to replace them. Love the red color too, be smart, buy these, save yourself the headache.

"Great for keeping your tent from blowing away!"

Rating:*****
I've lost several of my stakes that came from my original tent set, so it was time for some replacements. Funny story....I lost one...well not "lost" so much as couldn't get it out of the ground because I hammered into a tree root. Yeah, those things don't like to give up tent stakes...jerks.

"Lightweight and strong"

Rating:****
Exactly what I needed lightweight but strong. My bag is full of bent metal that barely snakes through a stake loop. Now I'm relaxed and confident that my Ground Hogs will wrestle that tent into place and hold it there all windy night long. And ya' gotta love the color!!

Ground hog tent stakes

Rating:*****

I used these on Shasta, and they worked fine in the snow, however, I packed snow on top so they didn't pull out, and there were no high winds. They are slightly bigger than the stakes that came with my BD Firstlight tent.

Great tent stake

Rating:****

I can attest to the comments made regarding the overall strength of these stakes. Despite their light weight, they are solid - trust me. I've driven these into rock laden ground with a chunk of granite and they didn't bend.

Negative Reviews:

ouch!

Rating:**

While these are strong, ouch when I cut my bare feet on the VERY sharp tops. Wear shoes or, better yet, use a round-top stake (Easton/Mountain Hardwear). Happy Camping!
