Nikwax Tech Wash Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

The first order of business when I received my bottle of Nikwax Tech was to test was to read the back label to see if it was written in English instead of tech speak. I was happy to see that it's written in a very easy to understand and follow manner. If you've visited the Nikwax website you'll know it's filled with lots of great detailed, technical explanations and science, but it isn't always easy to understand. The awesome Nikwax team is currently creating easy to understand content, diagrams, drawings, explanations and videos, so be looking for those coming soon to the website.
Nikwax Tech Wash is gentle on everything, yet gets the job done. It's a non-detergent cleanser. It helps your outerwear last longer because it is so gentle. I invest in my gear; I take care of my gear. And I don't want a harsh wash wearing it down faster. I wash nearly all my clothes on "delicate" in "delicate" laundry wash, even if they are every day items. So I was stoked that Nikwax's wash would be gentle to my beloved outerwear.
The Tech Wash, unlike most soaps and detergents, doesn't gunk up or block the pores in the jacket, thus keeping breathable clothes breathable. It also take off grime, dirt, and any other substance on the clothes that would mask the DWR (if your jacket had DWR). Since the wash is detergent free, it helps keep your clothes water reppellent, if they are a shell or jacket.
I've been very pleased using this product. It lines up with my "be gentle to my gear" policy. It has de-mankified my outwear, leaving it clean, shiny and looking like new. It's easy to use and is water based, making it "environmentally friendly."
My love for the Tech Wash went as far this past weekend as washing my designer jeans in it while traveling for business. That's how gentle it is. Tech Wash again shined.
Nikwax also stands behind their product to the consumers benefit. If it jacket is damaged during a wash, call Nikwax and they'll replace the jacket. They believe in their product and want to give consumers the piece of mind when using it.
So the next time your outwear is getting all manky, check out a bottle of Tech Wash. It works great in tandom with the Tx Direct, the waterproofer for hardshells.

This stuff works!

I bought Tech Wash to clean out a sleeping bag that I probably haven't taken out of storage since 2006. Up until that point, I used it heavily for three years. It's a three part, modular sleeping bag system of a synthetic fill with a light bag (30f), heavy bag (0f) and gore-tex bivy sack. Previously, the bag had never been machine washed, just spot cleaned. It definitely smelled pretty rank. I put the light bag in my Top load, He washer (kind without an agitator) with a cap full of Tech Wash on gentle, warm with an extra spin. I drip dryed. The bag came out like brand new! It no longer smells, it's fluffy and ready to start on some new adventures!

Don’t wash your tech gear in regular detergent, ever!

I’ve been using tech wash for years. It is the only solution for washing your high tech, high dollar gear. It will actually help regain water repellency. Do not make the mistake of using your regular detergent. Nikwax makes specific products for all your different gear types. My advice, buy a small size and try it out (like I did at first), and see if you notice a difference. Then (after you do), come back and buy the Liter size (like I just did) so that you’ll always have some on hand. Then fill the first smaller bottle up, and use it as a travel size, or give it as a “gift” to the poor unknowing souls… Just get it!

Gets even my white snowsuit clean

I wash all of my snow clothes in Nikwax Techwash and you should, too. You do not want to wash waterproof clothing/gear in regular detergent or fabric softener because those products will degrade the waterproofing. I wash hats, gloves, snowsuit, etc all of it in Techwash. Since I have white gear that really needs to stay clean, I also use a scoop of Oxy Clean in the wash. The combo works well. I wouldn't wash my gear in anything else. The only drawback, if there is one, is that the Techwash only comes in a small bottle. I would like to buy a bigger container.

I was a little nervous about washing my expensive collection of gear, but I gave this a try anyway. Everything came out great! Got some small stains out of my hardshell jacket and softshell pants. I washed two hardshell jackets, one fleece, one synthetic down liner, and one softshell ski pant in the same load with the recommend about of Tech Wash. I put the load through an additional rinse cycle. Everything came out great! Very happy with this product.

I guess it works

Used on Kokatat Tropos drytop and dysuit. Recommended by nikwax prior to waterproofing treatment. Confirmed with Kokatat that this was OK for Tropos fabric. I had some stains on sleeves near gaskets I think from 303 use. Direct application was done as recommended but stains still remained. The following nikwax treatment went well for the drytop and water beads up well but did not go as well for drysuit. Nikwax customer service was great in replying to my e-mail questions

I am very impressed with how well these Nikwax products work. I used the TX Direct spray on in conjunction with the Tech Wash here and it literally transformed the material on my jacket. My 2 year old jacket has had it pretty rough. The material felt coarse and had some fuzziness to the fibers from being flogged so hard. After washing it the material felt smooth and supple again. Very impressed with this product.

I used this to wash my London Fog trench before using the Cotton Proof (see my review there). I had never proofed my trench so I figured it needed a good wash and proofing. The combination of the Tech Wash and Cotton Proof worked awesomely for me. So I am not sure how well this would have worked alone, but for my purposes, it did the trick.

Great!

If you're looking for a technical wash that will subsitute for your normal laundry soap...this is the ticket. This washes all your gear and takes the stink outta them without harming the gore-tex or "insert technical name here" material. Low suds and doesn't smell like it just came from a chemical factory. This stuff actually restores some of my clothes waterproofness! a+++++
S at Moosejaw on 12/20/2010

This did exactly what I needed it to do! It brought life back to my jacket!

Earlier this year, my waterproof jacket was no longer waterproof. In fact, it became a sponge. However, after I washed it with this stuff, it repelled water just as well as when I first bought it. This stuff works. It also cleaned up my non-waterproof jackets really well. I use it instead of regular detergent for all of my north face jackets.

Negative Reviews:

Great product, awful cap design...

Basically, once you use the cap to measure the detergent, and you replace the cap, the residual detergent in the cap has nowhere to go, and thus spills everywhere. It's not like normal laundry detergent where it will funnel back down into the container through the lid.

So the product worked great, but they could do better with the design of the cap and spout.
Dave at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 08/08/2008

didn't do much

washed 3 jackets with this stuff and have yet to see the difference. maybe we just waited too long and they were too dirty to save?
