Osprey Aether 85

Hiking & Camping > BackpacksRated: ***** by 42 reviews.

Altrec

Great for multi-day climbing trips laden with hardware or for backpackers who believe going light means sacrificing too many comforts of home, the redesigned Osprey Aether 85 backpack offers plenty of volume and a high performance suspension system for all sorts of load toting. For short excursions from camp the IsoForm hipbelt can be threaded through the lumbar pad sewn on the bottom of the detachable top pocket to form a hip pack. But for big loads of camping equipment, Osprey has designed the next best thing to a custom built backpack. The AirScape suspension system not only serves as a rock-solid foundation for evenly transferring the weight to the hips, lumbar, and shoulders, but it also offers superior breathability. The Osprey Aether 85 backpack now offers the IsoForm custom moldable hipbelt technology to match the user's unique shape over this important load-bearing surface. The dual density shoulder harness offers a smooth, contoured fit, interchangeable sizes, and no sewn seams against the shoulders (as is true of all surfaces on the pack that contact the body). The Osprey Aether 85 backpack can also be considered a hydration pack on steroids. An internal backpanel hydration sleeve with twin exit ports provides customized plumbing and the external dual entry side pockets accommodate one liter bottles for easy access. The Osprey Aether 85 backpack is designed to comfortably carry loads of 45 to 55 lbs. For smaller loads be sure to check out the Osprey Aether 70 and Aether 60 backpacks.

Great pack, but ...

Rating:****

Great Pack, but could be better.

This pack carries very well up to 40 lbs; I haven't tested it above that. While I really appreciate the empty weight of this pack, from examining the sturdiness of its frame - I am of the opinion that I'd move up to the Argon when packing above 40 lbs.

The Aether 85 just has an amazing amount of room in it! I'm currently a 3 to 4 night packer and I never fill the pack but the straps allow me to cinch up all that extra material just fine. (The Aether 70 only weighs 3 or 4 ounces less than the 85.)

The "Could be better' part:
Q. The side water bottle pockets are terrible to retrieve a bottle from. I have to take the pack OFF to get the bottles in and out. I solved this by ditching the bottles and carrying two 2L Outdoor reservoirs (good old Walmart); one in each side about 3/4 full on long dry hauls. (If you a bottle man/woman this is a Major Problem.)
R. NO pockets for your camera or GPS. Again, you have to stop and doff your pack to get at snacks, camera, Gps unit, etc.. That's just plain dumb. (Major)
S. I'd move the key keeper a little closer to the opening in the top pack. (Minor)
T. The Aether 85 has a reservoir sleeve in the main body of the pack. This was difficult to use. The 100oz res. that I stuffed into it really didn't fit well when it was full. Unless you fill using the tube leading to the res. it's a problem to remove and reinsert it into a loaded pack. I don't use it anymore. It would give you one more location for a 2L res. though. (Minor or Major?)

I recommend this pack to anyone contemplating outings lasting more than 3 nights. It is a very comfortable pack and will haul loads of bulky gear!

Greatest Pack Ever!

Rating:*****
I have used this amazing pack on only a couple short backpacking trips so far, but am extremely confident about its ability to last me through my upcoming summer in the Sierra Nevada's when I will be doing quite a few longer backpacking trips.

Everything about this pack is the highest quality. The zippers and buckles are both durable enough to last decades of abuse. The zipper pulls for the bottom compartment are large rings that are much handier than I thought they would be, especially when you have mittens/gloves on in the winter. There is also a sleeve inside the main compartment for your water bladder. The drawstring cinch at the top of the pack is also much better than your standard poorly made plastic cinch -- it opens and cinches shut very smoothly and easily. While the pack is designed for minimalists, Osprey sure did a great job at the details of this backpack.

On top of its extremely high quality design and components, it is the most comfortable pack I have ever had on my back. The back padding and hip belt are second to none in comfort. It can easily support heavier loads into the 50-60lbs. range.

My only complaints about the pack are minimal quibbles: no hip belt pocket and no *zipper* compartments on the outside of the pack for water bottles or other small items. However, this cuts the pack weight down, making it a light pack for its expedition-length backpacking trip ability.

I really think this is a great pack and worth every penny. You won't be disappointed by its comfort, weight, or design.

Won't Quit

Rating:*****
This is my favorite pack I've ever put on. I've brought on countless trips throughout the Whites and recently on a 12 day in Alaska. You could find a place to put almost anything in or on this pack. I've carried about 65 pounds in this pack easily. Don't think you'll be able to put that much weight in here and immediately be comfortable, you need to train your back to do that. This pack helps though and distributes the weight appropriately.

If you're going for a day hike or a shorter trip, this pack is light enough for you and adjustable enough to strap down so it's not a nuisance.

Pretty much, if you're going to buy one pack to feed all your needs, this pack won't disappoint.

It's top loading with a zipper on the bottom for a sleeping bag/tent/anything really. Some people don't really know how to operate with a single compartment top loader. I suggest getting a few waterproof stuff sacks (or even just trash bags) to help organize your stuff. If it rains, then you won't need a pack cover to keep your stuff dry.

If I were to pin something on this pack as a con, the back doesn't vent perfectly. You'll get a bit of sweat buildup on your back where the pack meets. However, the backing won't absorb moisture so it doesn't collect. This is a problem with any pack that you put anything more than 10 pounds in.

I've compared it against some "better", more expensive packs, this one is worth every cent.
AlexT at REI on 10/09/2008

"Very Good". I wouldn't say "Perfect".

Rating:****

There are things that this pack does well. And then there are things it does just "okay".

First the good. Its well-built and the zippers don't fail. The zippers come with easy access rings, and the teeth are large and sturdy. Everyone keeps harping on how large it is, but for my 4 day trip on Rainier, it was just enough. I routinely carried 60 lbs in it, no problems.

I'm 5'6" and 136lbs. I got the Medium and that fit me comfortably. I have to admit, it wasn't as comfortable as others I've tried, but its amongst the top 3. I think few will disagree, its a comfortable pack. My only gripe on the size and fit is that it does shift a little too much for my personal taste. But maybe if I got the small, that would be different.

Now, my major gripe with the bag is that it doesn't have any side access. With a large bag, its very useful to include a side zipper so you can retrieve things from the middle of the pack. That would have given this 5 Stars in my book. Additionally, it doesn't organize very well. It would have been nice to be able to get some exterior pockets and additional organization.

Still, it did the job in fine style. And I love the color. For anyone who's interested, this is a link to my Rainier Trip video:

great pack

Rating:*****
I bought an aether 85 in sunburst yellow. I have only 1 trip with this pack so far, but it was a 14 mile overnight thru hike with 6000 vertical feet in alaska's kenai mountains packed with about 45 lbs of gear. I was initially impressed by the build quality, and specs. it is indeed light for a pack of this size. the hip belt and suspension are very nice and fully adjustable / interchangable, I have the large pack size with a medium hip belt. no sore spots or rub spots on my hips or shoulders. My tall size sleeping bag fit in the sleeping bag compartment easily. the hydration pouch and slots / straps for the tube worked very well, my long 3 liter camelback did not fit all the way in the pouch due to sleeping bag at the bottom, but a 2 liter probably would and the 3 liter worked ok. all the compression straps and general compression strap layout worked very well, the bag did not shift on a trip that had some steep 3 point climbs and long ridgline traverse. if your looking for a large volume lightweight pack i highly recomend this one, it has a lot potential. could be a good winter bag, skis (up to mid-fat) could be carried a-frame style in ice axe loops, shovel could fit well in front pocket.

Great Pack!

Rating:*****

I can't say enough nice things about this pack. I became so familiar with heavy cumbersome packs that I didn't realize there were other options. I went from a very old school pack to a Gregory, which had great suspension, but it was entirely too heavy for its only function to be to hold the rest of my stuff. After a LOT of research, and coming to the reality that many backpacks aren't designed to fit someone my size (6'6"/265), I ended up with the Osprey. At 5 pounds, it was slightly heavier then I wanted, but it was much lighter then most others. The most noteworthy thing about this backpack is the fact that after using it for a solid 10 hours on day one, by day two, I was ready to go and my body didn't hurt at all because the pack is designed to put nearly the entire load on your hips (where it should be). I can say confidently that this was the most comfortable pack I've worn to date to carry...and that should say a lot to everyone. Like most Osprey products, the pack is made very well, it is very durable, and has just enough bells and whistles to keep the typical backpacker happy. If it fit me, it will fit you. Buy it.

Large volume, light weight, excellent quality and design

Rating:*****
Re-entering backpacking after 20-some years. Trying to go lightweight, but switched to this higher volume pack, to have sufficient room for a bulky synthetic 0F sleeping bag and warm synthetic clothes, for high altitudes and shoulder seasons. Took it on a 3-night trip in the Pecos Wilderness to 12,000 ft. Load-carrying system was comfortable even when 5 quarts water loaded me to perhaps 50 lb. for a hike to a dry camp. Floating top pocket sometimes a bit awkward, but works well. In combination with lower 'sleeping bag' pocket, and outer mesh pockets, provides enough pocket storage to keep smaller items organized and accessible. However, the simplified design still keeps the weight 1-3 pounds below quality packs of comparable volume. Various cinch straps keep the load close to your back even when all the volume is not being used. However, I had to cinch the 'large' hip belt all the way closed to get a reasonable fit on my 33-34-inch waist, so some people may need to select hip belt sizes that differ from the usual ones supplied with the various pack sizes.

Best pack...period!

Rating:*****

After extensive research and using a Kelty pack for years I made the decision to buy the Osprey, Aether 85 and couldn't have made a better decision. It carries a tremendous amount of gear with tremendous comfort becausue of the hip belt which is custom molded to fit your waist based on circumference and the air compression support for your back.

Positives: after the first day of an 8 day expedition trip the 60+ lbs I was carrying was vertually weightless which was amazing. In fact, I let others in our party try on the pack and they couldn't belive how light the pack felt considering the weight load. In addition, it's built very well and takes the abuse of canoeing, portaging and winter camping in fridgid temperatures.

Negatives: the pack doesn't have all the bells and whistles of pockets for organization and its not all that easy to get a Nalgene bottle from the side pockets.

Overall Grade: A and is a must have weather your a novice or serious backpacker.

Excellent Expedition Pack

Rating:*****

I bought this in February of 2007 for use on a 10-12 day backpacking trip at the Philmont High Adventure Base in New Mexico. We hiked at elevations from 6500 to 11,700 feet with loads from 40 to 50 pounds. I carried anywhere from 35 to 45 ponds in this pack. When I had the pack on it felt like it was part of your body. When you were hiking it felt like you were carrying a lot less. I have had and tried quite a few packs and in my opinion this was probably the best fitting one that I have ever had. The price was excellent compared to other packs of this capacity and the pack weight was just about 5 pounds. This pack in my opinion is a keeper for the serious backpacker.

"Best pack ever."

Rating:*****
I bought this pack after my old one died. I did a a ton of research on all of the best packs out there. I decided on this one because of all it's amazing features. I took this pack backpacking with my two dogs on a 23.5Km hiking trip in Frontenac Provincial Park as a test run after I bought it. It held up amazing well. I love the material, the contoured hip belt, the zipper openings, side straps. I had to order a different sized hip belt to match up with the proper sized torso pack that fit me. But they sell them separately for people who are odd shaped like me. But now the fit is perfect and I love how nicely the pack fits even when it's filled to the brim.

Negative Reviews:

Aether improve the pack or take it off the market

Rating:**

So very disappointed. I returned this pack after 1 trip in the Grand Canyon. Granted the Canyon eats gear alive, but I was really expecting more from a company with Osprey's exalted reputation(not to mention price tag). The belt is basically worthless, barely padded, and inadequately suited for comfortably supporting a heavy load. At the time I bought the pack, the heat moulding was not available at BCDC outlet,I am skeptical that it would have made any difference, a skinny, unpadded belt is what it is(I have since noted that there is a moulding machine available at the outlet). The fabric was pummeled by an endless variety of vicious rock surfaces, and the afore mentioned belt began to basically unravel. My partner pack, years older than mine, but also an Osprey, seemed to perform admirably, his model sported a much beefier belt, and a tougher fabric. It seems to me that the "big bird" is running on fumes and reputation. I hate to harsh, but the Royal Arch Loop is the last place you want feeble gear. For those that say, I should have tried the pack out under gentler circumstances, I accept your censure.

"Huge, supportive, and bombproof."

This pack will take any load you can stuff in it. I've carried more than 50 pounds and it is very supportive. Much better than my North Face pack. The hip belt is surprisingly thin but comfy and the mesh/foam back panel is great for keeping your back from getting sweaty. I thought I would really love the ergonomically curved shoulder straps but they seem to dig into my collar bone at times which can get pretty painful on long trips. You really have to play around with the suspension to get it dialed in just right but once you do, it barely feels like you are carrying anything.

"fine unless you want more than 1 pocket"

Bought this pack for my husband to serve as luggage while traveling abroad. Well built pack but lacks enough pockets to keep your stuff organized and easily accessible - he likes it but, but we should've gone with the Kelty RedCloud instead
