Osprey Quantum -

The Osprey Quantum Pack is a daypack that makes me wonder if Osprey has some sort of pocket engineer sitting around thinking of awesome and functional pockets to add to their packs. Maybe engineer isn't the right word. Pocket Jedi Master might be more appropriate. This backpack features a laptop pocket, an internal document sleeve, an MP3 pocket, a front pocket with a mini-organizer, a front stretch mesh pocket, and plenty of extra room in the bag to spare. Everything has a spot without having excessive pockets: it's a flawless balance of pockets that only the most advanced Pocket Jedi Master could create but is for everyone to appreciate. Ideal for trekking across campus or for a quick overnight or daytrip, this bag is always ready to go and looks great carrying anything. And don't worry about being delicate with your daypack: use it and abuse it without worries thanks to it's durable ripstop nylon construction.

Positive Reviews:

I was looking to replace my old North Face Recon pack that I've had for about 10 years that's been slowly falling apart (it still works fine just starting to delaminate and get a little saggy). I actually replaced it with two separate Opsrey 24/7 packs since they fit my needs perfectly- a little outdoorsy without being too technical, a little techy without being too firm/rigid/heavy since I by and large don't commute with a laptop or heavy text books anymore but have the option of carrying them if I need to. Mainly using this bag as a gym/triathlon bag and occasional short tropical getaway luggage. There is one large main compartment that holds a good sized laptop, iPad, documents but also holds a towel, running shoes and cycling shoes without a struggle. There are also two zippered pockets on the outside of the bags next to the water bottle pockets that I keep swim stuff in but probably designed for peripherals and power bricks. They're not super accessible on the fly since they are located under the compression straps (as are the water bottle holders) but not a big deal by and large. Love the stash pocket in front which was my favorite feature on the North Face Recon. Not large enough to hold a bike helmet but will catch some of the stuff that you don't want to open the main pack for. It is a pretty large backpack which is why I am looking at a smaller pack as well (either the Flare or the Comet) for daily to day stuff. Although it actually looks much smaller than it actually is at 34L, not too overwhelming. Wish there was a larger separate pocket (see the Comet) for a wallet (like a girl clutch wallet, not a billfold) without having to put it in the main compartment. I got the Mango Yellow which is not for everyone but I really like it- it's really more of a Dijon Mustard. It's fun without being obnoxious and really, who needs another boring black business bag? Appears to be very solid construction although I have not used it long enough to really attest to this, we'll see if it holds up for 10 years like my TNF. Osprey also apparently has a killer guarantee that if anything breaks, they'll fix or replace it. Can't beat that!

Quality Pack

I purchased the Osprey Quantum as a commuter pack. Everything for work, school, and an evening workout fits well inside. The pack also appears to be well-made and makes a heavy load much more manageable. But although I am happy with this purchase overall, I am disappointed with a couple different features.

First, I was expecting the mango color to be brighter. It is definitely much more of a muddy gold than the picture lets on (at least on my computer), but it is striking nonetheless and a nice change from your standard black and navy blue backpack.

Second, the adjustable strap cords are very long on this pack. Makes for infinite adjustment possibilities I suppose, but even with a full pack I still feel like I am trailing ribbons everywhere I go...

Now, my most serious complaint regarding the design of this pack has to do with the POCKETS. The placement of the small front pocket, positioned near the top of the pack, is awkward. It should be noted that this pocket IS NOT DEEP AT ALL, and that if you overstuff it (as I like to do) it protrudes not outward but inward and can seriously obstruct your access to the lower region of the main compartment. If another handy pocket for small items needed on-demand was provided, I wouldn't have to overstuff this pocket. However, there is just no other option with this pack... As for the side pockets, they are neat and great for holding certain things like an umbrella or hairbrush, but they are neither easy nor comfortable to access as the adjustment straps run right across them and tend to get in the way.

I absolutely love this backpack. I had been looking for a new backpack for over a year and could never bring myself to spend the money on one in case I didn't like it. I finally stumbled across this one and talked to a very helpful person who told me all about it. My biggest concern was it being spacious enough for all of my books. I'm in nursing school and have to tote around anywhere from 1 binder to 4 textbooks and 2 binders. This backpack carries it all and stays comfortable while doing it. I have to say it is absolutely amazing for all of my needs. On another awesome note, the waterpack pouch doubles as an awesome laptop sleeve that fits my 13" macbook pro perfectly and even leaves space. Just when you think it can't fit any more stuff, there is an outside pouch that stretches to hold my planner, drug book (which is pretty thick), and even a snack. And the side pouches stretch big enough to hold a nalgene. All in all this backpack rocks and I would suggest it to anybody. One last thing, I am an avid hiker and this pack doubles as a great daypack. Most importantly besides it keeping your back comfortable, it has this awesome foam layer that doesn't make your back sweat like normal bags. Once again, can't praise this pack enough. And I'm 5'5" and about 135 lbs. and it isn't bulky on me at all!!

Almost the perfect bag

It is amazing what having a light back pack makes when commuting. I went from a Targus laptop bag to this bag and it was a real noticeable difference in the weight. It is very comfortable sits on my back well.

I really like the laptop compartment but it does not have very good padding. I recommend having a hard shell or a sleeve on your computer if you are not careful when putting your bag down. The plus side to the lack off padding is that is makes this a great day pack when the laptop compartment is empty.

I love the deep pockets and all the adjustable straps. The long straps can get in the way when not in use. The outer most pocket is a great pocket for keys but the zipper flap gets in the way and may not lend it self to one handed quick access.

Overall the bag is great, large capacity, and light weight. Fits better than any Ogio or Targus bag that I've ever had.

Osprey Quantum Pack

I use this as a every day carry bag, mostly to work and class, but because of its great build quality and comfort, I could definitely see this as a day pack as well. This bag is very well built, strong zippers and stitching all over it. The back pads provide good support and allow ventilation. I do wish the organization pocket was a little bigger. The only down side I've seen be it a small one, are the water bottle pockets don't hold in the bottles (Guyot Designs Hiker 32oz and Camelbak 25oz, though the camelbak stays a little better) I've used very well, the come lose after a day or so of it being thrown into the car or dropped on the floor. Also one of the biggest draws to me was Osprey's warranty, one of the best, if not the best among quality backpack brands (this plus the quality is why I own 3 Osprey bags) Overall I'd give this 4.5 stars out of 5, really great pack.

Great for commuting with 2 laptops

I purchased this pack when I started needing to carry two laptops for work. It replaced my Timbuk2 Classic Messenger of many years. I carry either two 13" or one 13" and one 15" laptop in the Osprey Quantum very comfortably. It travels with me to work every day and also goes nicely on the plane and train.

I like that even with two laptops in the main compartment, the bag rides flat and close to my back. The material is lightweight and feels durable. The suspension straps are nice and adjustable.

The bag isn't particularly water-resistant; I ended up treating it with Nikwax TX Direct. It would be better if it had more individual pockets overall. Also, the side pockets are difficult to access when the side straps are latched. Sometimes items in the side pockets interfere with loading larger items in the pack's main compartment. For users with less to carry, I think the Osprey Comet might be a better option.

Perfect for Travel

I spent a lot of time researching bags and I was very pleased with this selection.

I echo all the same 'Pros' as the other ratings. I'm an avid traveler and I was looking for something not only light & durable, but well-built. I needed something I could pack quickly and get going.

The pockets are well placed and eaasily accessible. I have a 15" laptop that stretches into the pocket just fine. I like the side pockets for smaller accessories like chargers and snacks.

Some of the straps seem too long, but not a big deal to me. I also haven't used it in an extreme wet enviornment yet, but it should be fine. I don't plan to take it swimming.

Lastly, it's a great airplane carry-on. Fits well in seat in front of you and easy to access items especially in the strecthable front pocket.

Very pleased!

Okay, honestly I was a little disappointed when I first got this pack in the mail. For the price I expected cushier, thicker shoulder straps compared to what is there, and other small amenities that other packs seem to have. After a few days, however, I found there are ways to customize how the pack rides on your back by adjusting certain straps, and this made it so cushier straps weren't necessary. After a week the pack grew on me even more, both in style and utility. I use it primarily for school and can fit a 15" laptop, four spiral notebooks, textbook, iPad, and there is room to spare. All in all I would say this is a great pack, would give it five stars if it wasn't quite as expensive.

Been around the world...

I absolutely love this backpack. I went to the store to buy a North Face Recon but liked the color of this (Mango)and tried it on. It was infinitely more comfortable. I've used the backpack all over Texas, the West Coast, and even in Japan. It always holds more than I think possible and carries nicely on my back. The laptop compartment doesn't have a lot of padding which as another reviewer points out makes it much more versatile. I have a sleeve for my laptop anyway so I just drop it in the slot in the pack and forget about it. It is the best backpack I've ever had and am very thankful for the lifetime warranty in case anything happens, although it is holding up very well so far.

Excellent tote around backpack for travel or in the field. The padded laptop pocket fits my 15" Macbook Pro perfectly an still has plenty of room for a full three day supply of clothes and electronic accessories. I took my brand new pack to Chicago and carried my life on my back traveling on the buses and trains with no hassles whatsoever. The pack has a narrow profile, so it fits all types of body types, male or female. My only critique is that the waistband is a little to thin and flimsy for my liking, it wouldn't be ideal if I were actually hiking, climbing, or running, but I understand most people wouldn't even use it, and in that case it is completely removable. Excellent backpack, I highly recommend it.

Not what I wold expect from osprey...

This pack is only for school or work. It has no place in the outdoors.

Fabric gets caught in the zipper

This is generally a good backpack - roomy enough and with enough different compartments, although I would prefer it to have two large compartments instead of just one. I've only had it for 4 months, but it seems to hold up well.

There is one frustration that keeps me from giving the pack 4 or 5 stars. There's a little edge of fabric meant to cover the zipper tracks when the pack is zipped closed, and more often than not the zipper gets caught on this fabric when I'm zipping up the pack. It takes me a little bit of finessing each time to get the zipper unstuck and close the pack.
