Outdoor Products Campmor Essential Carry-On Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Best Value, Great Quality, Fantastic!

I found out about this bag (formerly called the OPEC "Outdoor Products Essential Carry-on") and was both suspicious and tempted. Turns out to be completely wonderful I just returned from a 9 day trip to Greece and took only the OPEC. It fit on board everywhere...island hoppers, shuttles, buses, small convertibles. And, I carried a good bit of stuff;three pairs of pantsfive t-shirtsone collared shirttwo pairs of shortspair of shoesdop kitcomputer and accessoriespoint and shoot camerawindbreakerfive pairs of underwearone pair of socks.Didn't even have to do laundry! Also brought home some gifts, including three Greek fisherman caps, a Greek cream pastry, and two flight DOP kits for the kids. Covered up the monstrous logo with some photographer's gaffing tape. Fabric is tough, zippers good. My only real worry is that the stitching for the back pack straps seems a little light. Not sure how it will hold up in the long run, but worked fine on this trip and can easily be beefed up with a trip to the shoe repair shop if needed. At [$] it blows away other more prestigious bags made in US. Sorry to say. Had one for comparison and sent the US darling, beautiful though it was, back. Five stars if logo was more subtle and stitching a bit beefier on the straps.

Great Value

I have travelled with this bag on two 3-week trips to Europe and countless trips of 2 to 10 days in the states. I carry between 10-lb and 23-lbs in the bag. The bag is as close to perfect for carrying my clothing/gear in a lightweight and small-enough bag size as I have found. ... certatinly for the price. When i received the bag it was missing one attachment for the shoulder strap (which I never use anyway). I have walked some 3-miles with the the loaded bag on several occasions; the shoulder straps are fine -- not as nice as an expensive backpack, but they are acceptable. I tried to powerwash the logo off, use acetone to remove it -- no way. I finally replaced the piece of material with a very similar material (I do not recommend unless you are comfortable sewing). That was two years ago and still going. You can stuff it beyond the size and weight limits of RyanAir or AirBerlin; however because the bag is soft you can also only pack it to the appropriate size. IReally great bag and value overall.

Easy fix to logo problem, for great bag

A lot has already been said about how great yet ugly the bag is, and I second all of those thoughts. What I thought might be useful to all of you trying to figure out the logo problem is to offer an easy solution. All craft stores (and even box stores) sell iron-on patches for a dollar or two. As soon as I received the bag, I just bought a large black iron-on patch and covered up the logo. The patch is thin fabric so it doesn't add any weight and it's far better than using a black marker. The logo still shows through very slightly but it is black on black so only if you look closely. Just make sure that you place a cotton towel in the pocket under the logo before you iron the patch on, to ensure that you don't iron the two layers of the bag together! Also, watch the heat on the iron (medium only, no steam) because nylon melts easily. The problem was fixed in less than 10 minutes and I have a bag I can use globally without embarrassment.

great travel bag

We bought two of these a couple of years ago for a trip to Denmark, and loved them - we managed to pack all of our clothing for a 10-day trip in these bags. Easy to carry, and love the backpack straps which can be tucked inside and out of the way. When it came time to make another big trip, we bought two more so our kids would have them too. Had no problem using them as carry-ons except on the return trip from Thailand where we had them stuffed full with souveniers - the airline made us check two of them.

Love the variety of strap configurations (backpack, shoulder, handle) and the outer pockets. We use packing cubes to organize clothing inside this bag, since there's no internal structure.

The bags are well-constructed and have held up beautifully to being stuffed, tossed around, and traveled with. Really pleased with them.

The big Campmor logo on the newer ones is kindof distracting...our kids covered the logos with electrical tape.

Great Value!

Made by Outdoor Products (at least according to the tags). Many reviews out there on it, I bought it and plan to use to more for second bag when I travel than solo bags. I plan to cover up the HUGE 4 X 10 Campmor with either duct tape (black on black) or a nice big velcro patch.

The bag will swallow the Eagle Creek Packing Folder (18), and is probable best suited to have something inside of it giving it some shape, less than full it doesn't hold shape well. I found that a couple of partially full half cubes on top max out the space.

If I was elected Product Development Emperor for Campmor, I would downsize the Campmor label to something maybe half the size, I would also add someway to put compression straps on the bag, which would make it easier to use partially filled. I would delete the backpack shoulder straps as well.

Good travel bag

I was looking for convertible bag (hand luggage) that will allow me to carry the items I need, be lightweight sturdy and reasonable priced. The bag must fit under the airline seat as I did not want to use the overhead cabin space.

I actually ordered a similar item (unfortunately Campmor will not show the name) from overseas (UK) before discovering the OPEC.
Both are lightweight and about the same size. What I like about Campmor is it's a bit smaller in size which is a plus for my small frame. The other bag however offers external compress straps, a plus.

The Campmor Essential Carryon is a great buy and I'm considering getting another.

A few con's: I think external compression straps will make the contents hold the shape better as oppose to the internal compression straps and the logo is too large. Overall a good bag.

Excellent

I bought this after a search for clever carry on bags. For the price, I had to give it a try. I was not disappointed! I was able to fit a full week's worth of business clothes, a workout outfit, a suit jacket, plus some small exercise equipment it is without difficulty. I even had pants for every day stuffed in there. After all that, it fit easily into every overhead compartment I used, including one the attendants apologized for as being small. I'm 6'2" 215lbs, so these aren't tiny clothes.

I will treasure this bag until it dies and get another when it does. There was not a single sign of damage following my seven day trip on four planes and a few cabs.

As a side note, it now has compression straps inside!

Really 4.75 stars :)

Great bag, especially for the price! Very roomy and I like how it opens like a suitcase. I think the logo looks cool and retro (why does everyone hate it?? Some people seem upset - especially those traveling in Europe - what's the big deal? I live in London and travel all over Europe.). I suppose the only downsides are that it only comes in black and the compression straps don't do much. The outer pockets show a good awareness of what's useful to a traveler - things are easy to find. If this bag also had a separate padded laptop comparment along with the other suggestions it would be absolutely PERFECT.

In case you're wondering, it's a bit too big to use as a day bag, but it seems to fit most airlines' carry-on size limits.

Completely and Totally Awesome

Bag is unbelievably well made and useful at any price, let lone [$]. Holds more than I thought. I can get about a week's worth of travels out of it, including shoes and jackets. Fits an over head bin quite nicely, unless the outside pockets are jam packed, which doesn't really work any way. The pen organizer is a little useless, but who cares. I use it almost exclusively with the backpack straps, usually just one, because it is the easiest and most comfortable way to get around. Also, this is the exact same bag as the Outdoor Products Essential Carry-On, for all you one baggers out there who have been lamenting the loss the budget friendly bag. It even comes with the OP tags on it.

Perfect for upcoming trip to Italy

My husband and I are taking a trip to Italy and our flight has a weight restriction of only 13 pounds. I didn't think we would be able to get our luggage down to that weight, but these bags make our goal much more attainable without having to sacrifice on what we're taking. In addition, we will be traveling part of the time on a train and will have to carry the bag around with us for one day. We won't have to worry about any problems because this bag is perfect for our trip. Also, I know some have complained about the large logo, but when I received the bag I didn't think it looked as bad as some made it sound.

Negative Reviews:

Nice bag but not very durable

Aside from the ugly logo that everyone elese has gone over, I have found these bags not to be very durable. I purchased a couple of these bags about a year ago, and have used them maybe 10 times. Unfortunately one of them has already failed. The stitching on one of the backpack straps came undone, and the strap is no longer attached on one end.

Campmor only guarantees these for a year, and Outdoor Products says these cannot be replaced as they have been discontinued. While these are nice sized, lightweight bags, do not expect them to last very long. I guess at this price point, they are intended to be disposable.

Neutral Reviews:

Simple one-bag carryon

This is the old OPEC bag, a max-carryon-size bag without bells and whistles that works as a duffle or a backpack. Versatile enough for city travel and some trekking. It's not super high quality and wouldn't stand up to serious backpacking. There is no internal structure, which makes good packing a necessity. And yeah, the logo is way ugly.
KLB at Campmor on 05/05/2011

Nice looking bag, but ......

....that huge Campmor logo just kills the whole deal. We're traveling through Europe this fall, and I would buy this bag for family members if the logo were smaller, but no way. We'll probably go with something from instead. I cannot recommend this bag when the logo is this blatant and obtrusive.
