warm

amazingly warm for a light wieght hat. if used actively you may expetience sweating. inside is soft and comfortable. a pull out front flap covers your face if needed and stuffs in the side ear flap and zippers shut. the front top flap stays put with a magnet sewn inside. some images iv seen appear to have snaps but mine has a magnet and it works fine. this is my second OR hat. my other one is a Rando. both are very nice hats. iv read reviews of sizing issues. my head measures 23 inches around and I ordered the Frostline in L/XL and it fits perfect. my Rando is also a L/XL and its a bit snug but not uncomfotable. OR makes very nice products.

The perfect winter hat?

Fits very well (sizing chart accurate), warm, very light, water resistant, windproof, breathable. Works well in heavy snow, heavy rain (it fits very well under a hood). The peak blocks rain, snow and the sun when lowered. It also blocks the reflections from snow because of the dark colour of the peak's underside. I would recommend that if you will be in extremely cold temperatures (minus 20 and lower), that you size up to allow for a balaclava and/or thin beanie to go underneath to add even more warmth. The drawcord at the back can then be pulled tight in the warmer months. The hat also looks pretty cool so can be worn in the city no problem.

Works for me

This hat is what I use at my job when I work in winter conditions. Took snowshoeing and it is almost too warm for that unless you are shoeing with minimal elevation gain. It doesn't look half bad either, I wore it around a bunch of teamsters and only heard one joke about it, so i've got that going for me....which is nice.

Good hat for the extreme cold.

Outdoor Research makes quality equipment. This is a good cap for the severe cold and high winds. I spend a good deal of time outside and the Frostline cap is great protection. It's well made and does not shrink with washing. Wash it in luke warm water with Woolite. Dry by compressing it between two towels and walking on them with bare feet.

Everything I expected !

I use this hat for blowing snow. I wear it 6-7 hours at a time. Very warm and comfortable. Wicks moisture well. Doesnot get wet easy in wet snow conditions. This hat is a bit pricey, but the best I could find for my needs at any price. Sizes run a bit small, buy a size larger than your normal.

All-purpose, high-tech head cover

Worked well in single-digit windy temperatures and easily adjustable with face mask. Nicely folds into small pockets. Wicking was surprising useful in 5-7 mile hikes in subfreezing temps. Magnetic brim snap worked better than expected while using insulated mitts. Hook/loop was the only shortfall lacking in a strong adhesion although it prevented any skin abrasion or sticking to other clothing.

practical and warm

I bought the cap for wearing in the sub-Arctic, so I bought a size larger to fit a polarfleece liner under it. The visor is small, but kept rain/snow off of my glasses. The chin strap is tolerable but needs a re-design. Overall the cap is very warm and functional in very cold weather.

Warm and functional

Very nice hat. Very warm and good build quality. Haven't had mine for very long, but I expect it will prove to be quite durable. I especially like the stowaway face mask. I find it fits rather small. I have a 7 3/4 hat size and the XL is small on me.
Court Jester at Mountain Gear on 01/01/2011

runs small

I've got a pretty small head so I figured that the medium would fit fine. It would be a good child's medium to my way of thinking. I couldn't really get the velcro to connect under my chin because it ran so small.
DogWalker at Campmor on 12/12/2010

Great

My son really enjoys his new hat and has gone hiking with it several times already. He especially likes the face cover that un-tucks to keep him warmer.

Negative Reviews:

Nice design, way too small

Have been trying for a while to find a good hat for my very bald husband - especially for skiing - liked the chin strap on this, and the face mask portion - but this one is quite expensive, and runs really, really small, and with the limited selection, we weren't able to make it work.
Susan at Campmor on 02/02/2011

Fair

Should return it, but will probably not go to the trouble. I expected better from Frostline. My bad. Would it have been better if sized correctly? Probably. A rather expensive mistake. Can't blame Campmor.
Lazarus at Campmor on 12/12/2011

Great Hat if it Worked

There are great features on the hat but the most important feature is useless. The chin strap will not hold worth anything. This was a very expensive mistake.

Neutral Reviews:

Just ok, average

This hat is just thinner and less substantial than I expected for a bomber type hat, that is all. It may serve well for people who want lightweight, packable windproof coverage.
Fred at Campmor on 01/01/2011

Warn Hat

Hat runs a bit big but overall its a good choice. Purchased mainly to use next season while attending Football games, gets cold up here in Dec
