Small, light and well made
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I'm well known for having tents for all seasons and liking cool kit. My first reaction when the Micronight Bivy arrived on the doorstep was that there had been some sort of mistake. The shipping box was way too small and light. When I opened the box and sure enough the Bivy was in there. I showed the packed Bivy to a friend his reaction was "that's it?". I already own an OR Advanced Bivy and I always had trouble putting it away after use. The Micronight comes in a bag that is not a tight fit for once. That said you can fit the whole thing inside my 1 liter cooking pot. The Micronight has no poles so there is nothing to lose. The Bivy is made out of two fabrics. The coated nylon floor looks waterproof but is shiny so you tend to slide a bit. I added some stick-on Velcro to hold my pad in place. I am six foot tall and the Bivy was a snug fit when inside the sleeping bag on top of a pad. This isn't for sheltering all day, just sleeping. The Bivy is a top loader so you slide in your pad and bag then slide yourself into the bag via the top and close the Bivy from there. I bought it for bug protection since there are all sorts of things that love to feast on me all night long. The bug netting over the opening works fine but I wish the bug netting zipper pulls were larger. I added some string to fix this. In theory you can sleep with the outer lid mostly closed but I tended to feel a little panicky and claustrophobic so I just pulled it up like a jacket hood and left the zipper wide open. The Bivy is supposed to be waterproof and I had no leaks when I used it. Due to my issues with claustrophobia I mainly used a Sil-tarp as a primary shelter and the Bivy to keep the pad and bag dry. One disadvantage with a Bivy is that you need to get out of your clothes to sleep and you can't change inside because of the tight space. In wet weather with nothing but a Bivy this can be a problem as can't get undressed outside because of the rain. The light weight tarp solves this problem and gives you somewhere to cook too. Of course you could just use a tarp alone but around here the bugs would eat you and rain splash would soak your bag. I don't know why I didn't think of this to start with but I realized after the first use that I can leave the pad and bag inside the Bivy and roll it up. With the zipper closed it keeps the bag dry and can be strapped to the outside of my pack. Pros: Light, small and very versatile. Cons: A snug fit for someone my size (6 ft, 200+ pounds). Fiddly zippers on bug net. Slippery interior surface. Tarp a must in wet weather. Conclusion: It does exactly what I wanted it to do. It keeps the bugs off me, keeps bag and pad off damp ground and I can sleep without worrying about the random overnight shower. If I suspect it's going to rain hard I have tents to chose from but who want's to haul a tent just because they're worried about the odd shower? | |

Best combination of weight, features, and price

| This bivy sack is the most inexpensive model I could find with a breathable material. It also meets my goal of weighing around a pound, where most other breathable bivy sacks weigh around 2 pounds. Unlike some other lightweight sacks, it has bug netting over your face *and* can be closed up for rain. Unfortunately, the zipper does not extend down the side of the sack (it only opens at the top), but that is acceptable for weight savings. All in all, it is the closed sack to what I wanted I could find. In actual use, it's construction is of high quality, and it functions as it should. It kept the dew off my sleeping bag, and I had no significant accumulation of condensation. I would not expect it to keep me completely dry in a heavy rain, but I carry a lightweight tarp for that purpose. | |

Good size, light, nice features

I have tried several other bivys, and had problems with too snug fit, xs condensation, and seam leakage. The OR has worked well on a 5 day ridge running trip in Glacier Nat Park end of September. It improved my sleeping bag warmth by 10-15 degrees F, and kept me dry in a light rain. Plenty of room inside (I'm 6'1", 175 lbs), and the loops on the front are great to keep the netting off my face when suspended from hiking poles or branches. Easy to enter and exit. Folds up small for packing, very light for it's features, very happy with my purchase. Very useful for light, fast, high mountaineering.

Excellent Bivy | |

| Love my MicroNight Bivy. I use it in Austin Texas on my Catalina 25 Sailboat, at home in the backyard near Lake Austin. It works great with a cotton sleeping bag liner on warm nights, a fleece bag on cool nights, and a regular sleeping bag on cold nights. Great fabric and bug screen. My Coleman inflatable mattress with the MicroNight always provides a great nights sleep. I am 56, 5'11", 200lbs and share it with my dog Goldie (chihuahua). The MicroNight bivy should be issued to all Homeless people. You can sleep anywhere in comfort with one of these. | |

great bivy | |

The bivy was great. The bivy is perfect for what I want it for. It is very light weight. The bug net is great, because at night there are tons of bugs and zipping that up allows me to stay cool without bugs. I would recommend it because of the relatively cheap price. The only bad thing about it that there is a little condensation, which you can expect from almost any bivy.

Great bivy for almost any conditions

I have used this in freezing temps, light rain, snow, and even blistering hot weather. This bivy performs in all of it! The condensation stays on the outside of the bag and thanks to the pertex liner it is pretty waterproof and extremely packable and lightweight. I highly suggest this bivy and using the loops to guyout the top to stay out of your face or wear a cap.

| Has kept the mossies away from me and the rain out as well. A little hot for the summer though. It could use a pole or something to keep the insect net off your face. Otherwise its saved me from a ton of itching. | |
