Patagonia Alpine Wind Jacket

Men's Clothing > Jackets & VestsRated: **** by 36 reviews. Also available for: Women

Altrec

On high ridges, steep ice and anything alpine, Patagonia's new Alpine Wind Jacket serves as a true "best of all worlds" staple. It excels as a stand-alone shell for blustery rock climbs, cool-weather trail runs and high-output ski tours. And then, when conditions have you ice and alpine climbing, it functions as a lightly insulated windshirt on the approach that doubles as a frictionless mid-layer when it’s time to bundle up and tie-in. The polyester ripstop shell, with Deluge® DWR treatment, sheds snow and blocks wind, while the smooth, lightly brushed hanging mesh liner wicks moisture, dries fast and doesn’t bind to your baselayers. Superlight stretch-woven underarm panels enhance breathability and allow for unimpaired arm motion, and zippers close the three pockets (two hand, one chest). A drawcord hem, elastic cuffs, a heat-transfer reflective logo and regular coil, center-front zipper with DWR finish round out the features. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Features:

  • A super lightweight, lined windshirt for alpine pursuits; designed for use as a layering piece or an outer layer
  • DWR-coated center-front zipper
  • Drawcord hem
  • Elastic cuffs
  • Ideal Uses: Cold Trails, Ski Touring, High Ridges, Ice Climbing, Alpine Climbing

Simple Performance

Rating:*****
Sometimes old ideas work the best. I wore this jacket for a week this February of rock, ice, and alpine climbing in Colorado. Temps ranged from a sunny 60 F on the Flat Irons in Bolder, to 15 F at 4 am in the wind at the base of Flattop Mountain, before factoring in wind chill from the 30 - 50 mph winds off Glacier lake. By simply blocking the wind, this layer allows a wool base layer and an R1 Flash Pullover to provide all the warmth you need. Despite constant driving snow, no moisture got past the DWR finish. For the sunny days at Eldorado canyon and on the Flat Irons, I replaced my wool base layer with silkweight capilene boxers and t-shirt. When it got really cold, I needed to put a belay parka on over the Alpine Wind Jacket, especially when we stopped moving or got higher on the mountain. When things get active, nothing breathes as well as untreated nylon. When hiking hard in 30 F with a pack, I wore just my base layer and the Alpine Wind Jacket once I got warmed up. My 3-layer Gore-tex jacket stayed in the bottom of my pack for the entire week. The jacket survived a week of hard use and still looks brand new. My only complaint is that the sleeves are a bit long for me on a large, and I am trapped between medium and large sizes in Patagonia's model. I opted for large because I like the idea of layering a thicker R2 piece, and prefer the range of motion this gives me.

Perfect fit compared to competition!

Rating:*****
I really needed a wind shirt and I've been looking for the right one for a while...this jacket sealed the deal and saved me another $60! The DriClime was too tight in Large and too lose in XL. The Arcteryx Solano was expensive and just a tad too trim. This jacket fits like it was tailored just for me! I'm not in "peak" shape at 6'1" and 202 lbs, but a Large fits just right, with just enough room to use a lighter layer underneath. If anything, I will be layering over the top, being in the Northwest. Blocks the wind just fine and works as it should, while looking fantastic at the same time. I went with black, which is blue-black in the sunlight, but the green was mighty tempting!

Great Jacket

Rating:*****
I bought this jacket with the idea that it would be both a great wind jacket on its own and a great layering piece. The weather in Nebraska being what it is (87 degrees one day and 47 the next, and that's for highs), I have had the chance to try it in both cases and I couldn't be more pleased. On its own it does a great job of blocking the prairie breezes with veryy little weight. A real plus is the very soft hand of the outer layer, which is also very quiet (no swishing!). As a layering piece, I don't have to worry so much about my outer layer being wind-resistent and outer layers really do glide on over this jacket.

One for all Seasons

Rating:*****
Although I never have intentions of making random purchases, I felt an irresistible urge to purchase this jacket the second I saw it. The one thing not mentioned in previous reviews was a key selling point for me. This piece is buttery soft. Incredibly soft. Picking it up prompts plans for morning runs, late afternoon lounges and high ridge walks. It's ideal for all seasons. The sleeves do run long, and I spent several minutes deciding between a large and slightly more snug medium (5'10", 170). Went with the Men's medium. Probably the correct choice. This is one of the few garments I purchased in season at full price and have zero reservations about. Excellent build quality.
Nawanda at Patagonia on 05/25/2009

Love This Jacket

Rating:*****
OK so this light weight jacket is so so perfect, can take it anywhere and pull it out if the weather turns a little cold or windy. For hikes all I have to do is bring a long sleeved shirt and I’m set. Live in SF where the weather can always be windy so it really put this wind blocker to the test. I love this jacket so much I’m going to buy a second one to keep in the car. But what i'd really like to see is some wild beautiful design on the back, I say don't hold back designers, what about a Tibeten Flag design on it and make it HUGE...

Phenomenal piece

Rating:*****
I've bought this lightweight, packable jacket before going for my ususl three weeks mountain trip to the Italian Dolomites this past July. It was still cold when approaching climbs early in the morning, as well as on all pitches when in the shade. I would not want to get out of this jacket, regardless if I was wearing just a t-shirt or a fleece under it. At this point, I could not make it without it, the fit is great (with slightly longer sleeves you can reach high without the cuffs pulling up your arm), fantastic insulation, and sufficient pockets for your cell phone and energy bars. A must have peice of gear.
Chrisclimb at Patagonia on 09/14/2009

Great for layering

Rating:*****
I work as a rowing coach pretty far north and at some altitude, and often have to spend several hours out in cold weather without any major chance to make body heat by moving around. So I live in layers. This jacket does a surprising lot to add warmth to the mix, and the slippery shell prevents the bind-up that can happen when layers ride on each other. (I use it between a fleece vest or sweater and a fleece-lined shell parka; it takes all the friction out of that setup.) I also like the simple elastic cuffs. They don't chill the wrists on a rainy day the way wet knitted cuffs would.

living in it

Rating:*****

I have spent more time in this jacket the past two months than any other piece of clothing I own. It's the perfect spring and fall piece to always have with you. The exterior fabric is so soft, almost with a buttery feel to it. And the interior mesh lining is soft as well, offering a little bit of insulation, and a soft feel against your skin if worn over a t shirt. It does well in light rain and protects really well against the wind. I've worn it as an every day jacket, hiking, biking, and ski touring as well. You won't be disappointed if you pick this jacket up.

Ty Nelson at Backcountry.com on 05/02/2009

"The most comfortable tech piece in my arsenal."

Rating:*****
This is definitely one of the best Patagonia products I've ever purchased. Ultra light, super comfortable, and completely bombproof. This jacket cuts the wind like a hot knife through butter, and the hanging liner manages to insulate rather well despite its light weight. Rugged enough to use as an outer for blustery cragging, but stylish enough for a romantic evening on the riverfront. The Alpine Wind runs true to size but has some extra inches in the sleeve length. The fabric in the pit region is a little stretchy to help accommodate you on those handholds at the edge of your range, which is nice. Currently my favorite article of clothing.
Kyle at Moosejaw on 04/24/2009

Great jacket

Rating:*****
Based on weight, comfort and versatility, this is the best shell I ever had. Over a wicking T-shirt and a fleece shirt, it keeps me warm into the mid- to low thirties. If the temperature drops below that, I add a fleece vest, either over or under the jacket. For temperatures in the teens, I substitute a a fleece jacket for the vest, again either under or over. Yes, it's light enough to go under and roomy enough to go over. I like it so much I bought the women's version for my wife.
Jeff Olen at Altrec on 10/28/2009

Negative Reviews:

Disappointing

Rating:**

I was pretty disappointed in this Patagonia design. The jacket has got a lot of extra fabric in the arms, as if it was expected to go over a lot of layers--not the kind of design I would expect to find on a light-and-fast alpine windshirt. Why line it, then? Would not be good to climb in and the excess fabric will whip like crazy on a wind-scoured ridge or peak. It will work, but it isn't great for the type of alpine pursuits it seems to be marketed at. At Patagonia prices, so-so is not really good enough. I hope the crew in Ventura will go back to the drawing board with this one.

Use to be my favourite jacket

Rating:**

Just purchased this jacket 30th of Sept. 2009 and returned 10th of Oct. 2009. It is a great jacket for windy and cold morning walking to work BUT... After not even 2 weeks using this jacket and carry a bag to work material just worn out at the stitches. I returned this jacket to the store and waiting for refund. However Patagonia recommend this jacket as a good windproof lightweight product bit apart of this the material is very week and no worth money I paid for.

Only 2 stars, however I found this jacket as a PERFECT purchased on the beginning.
