A Good Way to Downsize

Rating:*****
I purchased the Atom because the zipper broke on my earlier model three-point sling pack. I considered shipping it back for repair, but I decided I really wanted a new bag, as I had been using this one exclusively for the last four years and it was looking kind of dingy and I was tired of the color. Also, I was carrying around a bunch of stuff that I didn't really need. I liked the Jacaranda color, and when I received the new Atom, was pleased to see that it had a smaller capacity. I cleaned out a bunch of non-essential items, and this new one fits just the items I need on a regular basis. The Atom doesn't have the big, flat, outer compartment that its predecessor did, which I found convenient for putting letters/mail in. But this one has an inner mesh pocket that can pretty much serve the same purpose. I'm glad they kept the small, zippered side pocket--it's the perfect place to always be able to find your keys. I like the grid pattern of the fabric, and the subtle tone-on-tone patagonia logo on the front. The only problem with the Atom? Already three of my friends have gone out and purchased the same bag because they liked mine so much!

Intended

Rating:*****
If you use this for what it's intended for, commuting, around town, etc.. then it's wonderful. If you are looking for a bag to really pack out, then it's not going to be exciting. My wife generally uses this now, but i used it for a long while. Waist strap is great for biking, is very comfortable. You can't really put a ton in it, other than day items. Example, a rain jacket, hat, wallet, phone, maybe a water bottle...The older ones had a mesh sack off the back, but the new ones have straps. I liked the mesh bag attached personally. But you can lash more to the outside the new way without compromising your internal storage. Great construction, and material. You can also put an iPhone in the front stash pocket.

All Purpose

Rating:*****
The Atom bag, unlike a common courier bag, is one that you may find yourself taking with you everywhere. It is very light and ultra comfortable, water repellant, and swings around quickly for easy access. The cool shape also works great at distributing weight and thus making it light on your back and shoulders. The zipper strap-pouch is smartly placed and great for containing cash or eyeglasses. An example of what you might carry is what I put in it on a recent Grand Canyon trip: strap pouch eyeglasses or sunglasses; interior mesh pocket holding keys, (there is a key holder), wallet, map, chapstick, two organic energy bars; main zip pocket easily held a Capilene 1 and the Cashmere Prohibition sweater; the exterior stretch mesh bag with the Rain Shadow jacket.

very nce, but very small

Rating:****
This bag is really great and well thought out. Just as I would expect from Patagonia. The nicest feature is that it easily slides from your back to your front without taking it off and all of the zippers are positions for easy and quick access. My criticisms are few and minor. First I wish the bag is really small. If it were 10% bigger you would be able to fit a pair of running shoes into it which would be perfect. Second the cell phone pocket just barely fits an Iphone of Blackberry. Third, one of the small pockets is lined with a soft fabric which makes pulling items in and out a little difficult as it bunches up and gets snagged. All-in-all a very nice product.

Great stuff

Rating:*****
I am a male nurse and father of a 5 and 7 year old, both girls. I had an older model of the atom and it has taken it all. This update is great a little more space, better organization. It goes everywhere with me. I take some pokes for haveing my " man purse" but I love this bag. Keys and wallet to the inside zip pocket. Cellphone to the shoulder strap. All the incidental and snacks to the main compartment. Off we all go for a hike or a day at the zoo. This bag works great for everday. Thank you I pass on old bags to friends, they all seem to like your products as well.

Great Purchase

Rating:*****
I have gotten my moneys worth out of this bag over and over again. Several years ago I bought it before a traveling trip. The price was high but I thought it would pay off and it did. It is the best traveling/hiking bag anyone could imagine or want. It perfectly fits a wallet, money, passport, nalgene, or any important information you want to keep safe and with you. I have thoroughly enjoyed this bag and have recommended it to many friends who have taken my advice, gotten it and loved it. Anything and everything patagonia makes is top quality, this is a great purchase and will make your traveling much easier.

Atom bag

Rating:****
I have carried this bag every day since purchasing it. I just returned from a long weekend trip that required multiple plane rides. While it's a little small to accommodate a wallet, large book, snacks and airplane-sized liquids, I was able to make it all fit with a little shoving. It was comfortable and the shape of the bag distributes the weight well. When I received the bag and realized there was a waist belt I called customer service who patiently explained how to hide it when not in use (I didn't remember the description on the web site listing this feature).

Love it!

Rating:*****
I just got this bag and I love it. At 400 cu inches it is just the right size to replace a purse, not really big enough to be called a day pack. It will easily fit wallet, keys, ipod, chapstick, sunglasses and a long sleeve shirt or water bottle. It is great that the waist strap tucks into the pack when not in use. My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that the straps are kind of long and they don't come with the elastic rings to keep them from flapping around. I love everything else about it.

A Step Up

Rating:****
This bag is certainly a step up from its predecessor. The bag feels more like a trail bag than a city bag, which I like. The multiple pockets and additional straps make it easy to segregate items and keep them from shifting around. The phone pocket is always nice and does fit my iPhone. If you are expecting a simple around town bag, this will most likely do it for you, but certainly feels like it is meant for a more active existence.

Atom pack

Rating:****
It's a good everyday bag for small items. The pocket on the shoulder strap is too small for sunglasses and smart phones. I have an i-phone and it will not fit in the pocket, my sunglasses don't fit either. The pocket works well for keys and other small items. The interior needs pen/pencil slots, all loose items go into a mesh pocket but it is hard to find items you are looking for.

Other Reviews:

"Loved the original atom, and this new version did not disappoint. Several improvements in design from the last one- more pockets to keep track of things. Only thing I actually dont like is that they added a lot of padding to the back of the bag, which holds heat and isnt too breathable. But its a great day pack, and I also love it on vacation."

"The bag was smaller than I anticipated and thus I cant use it for the purpose I intended. I still really liked it though and decided to keep it. Its perfect to wear to sporting events or tailgating and to take to the gym. The organization pockets are quite nice and its great not having to carry a bag around on your sholders."

"cute bag and it fits my body size well. not too big or small, the inner pockets are not quite what i was looking for in a bag, but still do they job they were intended to do. definitely worth it though, i love this bag and use it everyday religously."

Not sure yet

Rating:***
I just purchased this bag and am not sure if I'm going to keep it. I am searching for the perfect commuter/biking/day hiking bag. I want something small (I am petite and have a hard time finding a bag that will sit well on my back) and nice looking. The thing that is really irking me about this bag is that what seems to be the waistbelt attachment - the way it is attached to the bag is a whole lot sturdier than where the shoulder strap clips to the bag (just a tiny strap sewn into the bag). I am very worried about how this will hold up after carrying a book or two on my commute. Why doesn't it have the more durable waste belt construction since that is where all the weight will be held? This bag is designed so that you can switch the shoulder strap to attach it to the right (waist belt side) - but then the problem is that you no longer have easy access to the contents (the bag is upside down when you swing it around in front). I am a designer and am frustrated that the construction here feels a little counter intuitive and backwards. But then again, the side on the left that doesn't have the more durable strap attachment also allows me to get the whole shoulder strap just a little smaller - which allows it to fit me more correctly. I would be interested to hear from someone at Patagonia on why the design is set up like this - and from customers who've packed some weight in this back - on how the attachment on the left side of the bag holds up. Thanks!
