This is good, the buttons keep it on, at least!
I bought two of these hats for my twin 11 month old daughters. I have two of the puff rider coats (which are nice and warm and wash very well!), and the colors are such that I wanted to stick with the Patagonia hats. Because I have babies and live in NW Michigan, I need something that fastens under the chin, these girls won't leave hats alone, and it gets cold enough here that wearing a hat is not an option! Originally I was very excited that they had last year's hat (same fit, etc., but different colors), and I ordered a Small and XS, because at last checkup the girls heads measured 18" which put them well within the S size. Well, the brim is cute, but annoyed them both because it dropped in their eyes and even the XS's were huge on them. I don't know if my babies have an odd head shape (don't think so, they were C-section babes!), but the XXS fits the bigger twin pretty well, though it still falls forward. I like the material, love the buttons, but for some reason the fit didn't work well for us.
excellent but awful sizing
This hat is awesome for toddlers. my daughter likes to pull hats off and the neck strap keeps it on and fits perfectly.... which brings me to the sizing. my daughter is 11 months old and her head circumference is in the 85 percentile for her age and she fit in the XXS perfectly, which is supposed to be for 0-3 months. when she was 0-3 months her head was 90th percentile and it was literally impossible for her to wear the hat, it was so big it hung over her face entirely. so, if your child has a head in the 50% range, i would say subtract a year from their age when looking at the sizing and buy that size. aside from teh sizing problem, i dont think there would be a better hat for a toddler to keep them warm.
One item not sized properly, but cute and warm
I find every Patagonia item fits properly if you follow the weight and height on their size chart. These hats however, fit HUGE. No way a 0-3 month old would fit in the xxs. My son in 6 month old and his head size in in the 54th percentile (so average). And he wears the size xxs hat. He will need the xs by 12 months, as the xxs fits him just right with a little grow room now at 6 months. Size down, these do run big and the size chart is incorrect on this item. The hat is a great hat. Soft, warn and has a great fit that covers your child ears to keep them warm (if you order the right size).
Best Winter Hat
We bought this for our daughter when she was almost 1 for her first winter. The snaps were awesome because she couldn't get them undone, and I liked how they had two to make the fit perfect! Her head and ears stayed nice and toasty because of the excellent coverage this hat provided. Even though we bought the xs the lid fell into her eyes so we simply folded it up and out of the way. We got two winters out of this one!
He wears it!
My 11 month old rips most hats off, but he tried and failed and gave up with this one! So it stays on. I made sure to measure his head after reading reviews and glad I did because the 0-6 month size definitely fits him better than the one designed for his age. Great hat! Thanks, Patagonia!
Stays warm and put
We picked up one of these in xxs for our son's first winter last year and then bought this one for this winter. What's great about this hat is that kids can't easily take it off on their own. The full coverage on this hat is also great for keeping ears and neck out of the elements.
Best baby hat!
Purchased xxs for our 4 month old. She is average length/wt but large head. The hat is big but the visor folds up and stays out of her eyes. The hat is not bulky in car seat or carriers, and she does not mind wearing it at all. Excellent purchase!
Cute, but runs big
Unlike some hats I bought elsewhere, this hat fits my daughter's head and stays on due to the snap underneath. However, It does run big. The XXS fits my 7-month daughter (head cicumference in 50% percentile) even thought she should wear the XS according to the Patagona size chart.
cute and soft
This little hat stays on tight under the babies chin. The fleece is a little thin if its too cold, but a stocking cap fits under it nicely for very cold weather. The button is easy to close and stays in place well.
Hat that stays put - thank you!
Purchased for my daughter. She doesn't tear it off all the time due to the good old chin strap and snaps. The brim is key since sunglasses do not stay for long on her face. AND the pile is not itchy.
