Planes, Trains, and Tuck tucks

I recently purchsed both the 120L and the 45L for a 5 week adventure to Bangladesh and Dubai. After 32 hrs of flights we landed in Dhaka, Bangladesh and started our over-land travel to the NW corner of the country. The bad held up to 3rd world baggage handlers. We then boarded a train for a 6 hr train ride and the backpack straps came in handy when I had to run down the platform to board a moving train. After getting to our city, we then braved the motorized Tuck Tucks to finish our last hour of travel. The bag(s) held up. On the return trip, I kept loading and loading that bag up with gifts and extras I picked up there and again, it still held up. The seams and zippers held up with no issues. The 45L was perfect sized for a carry-on and again, seems to be a vast hole that never fills up. I'll be picking up a 90L here soon. Cannot say enough good things about this bag.

Shove it all in

I have one of MH's comparable duffels and the Black Hole is my fave. The material is just as strong but it's not as stiff, so it folds up smaller when I shove the empty bag in the closet.
It's perfect for hauling the family ski gear in the winter and the PFDs and other paddle gear in the summer. Using it around the water and mud is fine because the slick outer fabric sheds sand and is easy to hose down.
The wide base keeps the bag from rolling though the parking lot when throwing the thing out of the back of the truck.
The pack straps work great, but all the straps can sometimes get in the way when packing. I'm a little worried about checking the bag with an airline because of them since they could get hung up on a baggage conveyer. It'd be cool if they came off.

Love the 120

Just took a week long trip with my kids down south. Not a yak, Himalayan peak, or Class V in sight! BUT we did load up our 120 L Black Hole with scooters, skateboards, helmets, pads, baseball bats, and all sorts of spikey, pokey things and it was superb. Super tough, durable bag with many thoughtful features including more well place handles than you can shake a stick at. The padded removable backpack straps were invaluable to carrying this huge bag while also manuevering an extra large wheelie bag, a second bag, a daypack, and carseats on top of wrangling two kids through airports. Said kids looked down in awe as I filled it up with gear "Whoa it really is a black hole." Said kids also fit comfortably side by side in the bag. Hmmmm....tempting but probably illegal.

Best Duffel Ever. Its Big. Maybe too big?

I bought this bag to take on my trip to Russia earlier this year. I got it and started packing for my trip (its a two week trip and I am a girl, mind you, so i tend to over-pack. In fact i had about ten items of clothing that i never even wore). But I over packed: brought about 7 pairs of shoes, 16 pairs of underwear, 3 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of athletic bottoms, about 5 T-shirts, 4 dresses, and about 8 more dressy shirts. As well as all my toiletries and electronic accessories. The bag was just under 50lbs and still had room to spare. i could have packed a plush throw on top of it all and it would have just been full-- not full to bursting. It held up great too!

Black hole is accurate for sure.

I bought my 120L duffle while in Prague. Was using another brands XL base camp duffel but was running out of room and it was showing some wear and tear ( seams blowing out). With the 120L I had enough room for all my cloths and gear plus the other duffle. It continued thru 4 more counties on and off trains and plains like a champ thru rain and snow while its cargo stayed snug and dry. Carried it on my back and my trusty Yerba 22L back pack front loaded. Only area for improvement would be the addition of zippers with lock loops. Other than that I love Patagonia as a brand and their philosophy... Please don't stop what you are already doing makings outstanding products.

Great multi-use bag

I now own three of these bags in three different sizes, and love them. They look nice enough for my wife to barrow and take through the airport as a carry on bag, yet are rugged enough to be tossed in and out of the back of a helicopter at any location. I especially enjoy them for extended canoe trips due to their excellent water resistance, and the ability to comfortably wear them loaded down while porting a canoe.
Overall I have to give these bags 5 stars, I have owned and used them for 3-4 years now, and I have yet to run into a problem, no torn seems, split zippers or any of the other problems hard use can create in a bag.

I love this pack. you can fit a few different packs and equipment in one which is nice when traveling on a plane with your mountaineering partner. If you are carrying a lot of gear for an extended period of time this pack will allow you to carry a ton of gear and you might make it in one bag, or maybe two of these. They could be used for a lot of different applications, travel, fishing trips, and leisure. I use them when traveling overseas to Asia and South America on mountaineering and trail running adventures. They are strong durable and can take a hell of a beating.

Good Bag BUT

This is a great bag, but for nearly the same price you can get the North Face Base Camp Duffle which is indeed Bomb proof and is a real expedition bag. I have the XL Base Camp Duffle and I love it. Its been to Ecuador and Mexico and is so tuff. But I also Love Patagonia for many reasons so I got this bag thinking it was like the Base Camp but its flimsy and shinny and just nothing compared to the Base Camp Duffle. Get the NF Base Camp Duffle. The Black Hole is like a toy compared to the North Face Base Camp.

Aids w/inevitable junk show of big climbing trips

I always like to think I'll be perfectly organized for big trips. Never happens. Packing is always a cluster, and you drag bags through airports, huck 'em on jeeps and pack animals, everything. Ya need durability, space, not a ton of quiant little interior dividers and it can't weigh too much--those wheely ones take up half your baggage allowance just for the actual bag. This newer version of the Black Hole has real pack straps on it, which helps a ton. Plus it's super durable and practically waterproof, which is nice for the back of a jeep or when it's sitting out in base camp.

Black Hole

This the bag I got for when I want to run away in someone else's get-away vehicle. You really can just throw EVERYTHING in - tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, shoes, clothes, outer layers (pretty sure the body of an average sized person). I love the dual strap system, it has standard carrying handles for throwing it in a moving car and backpack straps when when you're trekking on foot. You can clip stuff onto the outside, but I still like to put smaller bags inside, otherwise you may never find you're looking for. Rugged, durable, ready to go.

Negative Reviews:

over the top advertising

great bag, loads of space, smooth zippers, nice handle placement, built to last. the only draw back, and the reason that I probably would not order another, is the Patagonia advertising. I love the brand, but the size of the name on the side- both sides! (and on the shoulder strap), is WAY TOO BIG for me personally.

Neutral Reviews:

Good product for its weight

First off, I pretty much like all Patagonia products and think they're well made. This product is very light compared with comparable products. However, it doesn't feel like it's as durable or as well built as, for example, the North Face duffel. This bag did hold up with minimal wear and tear while being drug up Kilimanjaro and through various international airports, and in neither place was it handled with particular care or kindness. One other thing to note is that this bag is not 100% water proof. I will deflect a light drizzle but don't expect it to be able to withstand a downpour without some items getting wet (especially those in the outside zip pocket).
