The open, highly breathable knit and feathery weight of Capilene® 2 affords unhindered airflow, excellent wicking for endurance activities in warm to moderate temperatures--it's also our fastest-drying Capilene®. Because of its low-bulk design and streamlined fit, Capilene® 2 also acts an excellent layering piece beneath Capilene® 3 or 4 during colder weather. Made of quick-wicking, fast-drying 54% post-consumer recycled (and 100% recyclable) Capilene® 2 polyester, with Gladiodor natural odor control. Made in USA. Common Threads Recycling ProgramResearch shows that the environmental impact of recycling worn-out Capilene base layers into new polyester fiber is significantly lower than making that same fiber from virgin materials. Taking into account that worn-out garments are diverted from trash incinerators, making new polyester fiber from recycled garments results in an energy savings of 76% and a CO2 emissions [greenhouse gasses] reduction of 71%, versus creating that fiber from new raw material. WOW!!! NICE!!!!!

I don't give things 5 stars unless they amaze me. These pants amaze me! I been making a transition from old school to lightweight backpacking/camping over the last 1 1/2 years. In the case of these pants it meant trading in the old faithful cotton fruit of the looms for a lightweight baselayer. I went back and forth trying to decide which brand and style to go with and the Capilene's seemed to be overall the most favored. I am glad I went with these for several reasons. First, let me get out of the way what I think may be important to some...

| These are obviously well-made and well-purposed for outdoor wear. I like them for that, but also for pajamas, both at home and on the road. Nothing as well made and comfortable. Last forever. Patagonia's lifetime warranty means if they have any defect in materials (as I once had on a pair of their shorts) that doesn't show up for a long time, you can get a replacement. With the new Gladiodor treatment, you can wear these for days on end (like on a business trip or holiday, when you are too lazy to wash them) without them getting funky. Having to take only 1 pair helps keep travel packing light! (Think, Rick Steves Europe.) Since they are made of synthetic as opposed to wool or cotton, one pair is enough for travel, since you can sink wash in the morning them using hotel soap bars or shampoo, ring them out (final ring in a hotel towel), hang them up, and they will be dry enough to wear that same night. Try that with wool or cotton, which take days to dry! Even if they are damp, they still insulate and will dry out on you quickly. Be sure to choose the right weight - Capilene 2 for summer, Capilene 3 for winter. | |

Everyday Capilenes | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought my Capilene 2 bottoms out of fear, fear of spending most of February in South Dakota. Moving in and out of doors, preflighting and refueling a helicopter, I didn't want bottoms that were too thick or bulky. The Capilene 2 and 3 both fit this bill. In temps down to 10 degrees F, The Capilene 2 was the clear winner. It was barely noticeable except that I was warm. But from +10 degrees F down to -20 degrees F, the Capilene 3 bottoms were better at keeping biting winds rolling off the South Dakota plains at bay. I ended up exchanging my first pair of Capilene 2 bottoms for a size smaller than recommended on the sizing chart. The waist band and fit were too generous. I found the Capiline 2 very versatile, light weight, easy to care for, and excellent for most of my applications. | |

My constant companion in winter

| Very versitile winter underlayer. I wear them from November to early April here in New England. On the really cold days, I wear Cap 3's, but mostly Cap 2's. A low profile makes them excellent under blue jeans. I even wear them (Cap 2's) under my suits at work on cold days. No one in the office notices but me. That is the beauty of these things; the weave is warm but not bulky. I own enough pairs to go a whole week. Superfast drying, exceptionally comfortable. They are my winter second skin; I am never without them. I highly recommend the Cap 2's and the Cap 3's ...your choice depending on the temp. | |

Meant for Warm Weather, Not Skiing
| Rating: | ![]() |
These pants are great, but the Capilene 2 is very thin and meant for warm weather, not cold weather. I didn't realize this until the pants arrived. The Patagonia tags clearly position the 2 as for keeping you cool in warm weather, not the other way around. For cold weather, like skiing, you really want at least the Capilene 3. I returned these and got the 3 instead, and I am very happy with them. The 3 is also fairly thin, so they won't make you too hot when skiing. I liked the 3 so much, I also bought a pair for my 10 year old son.

"Much improved Capilene Fabric"
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The new and improved Patagonia's Capilene fabric has a much better fabric weave and performance. It wicks more efficiently and dry out much quicker. Overall the polyester fabric feels 50% softer, closer to cotton. It doesn't cling or snag nearly as much as previous versions. And I really love that they added a odor prevention treatment because synthetic fabrics in general can really create a funky smell. A year ago I sold all my "lightweight and mediumweight" Capilene baselayers and went merino wool. But now I'm back with polyester in my wardrobe but only Patagonia's. | |

| These Long Underwear are great. I spent the summer taking teens on a canoeing trip and these were both my pj's and rainy/cold weather camp pants. I was in Northern Ontario and these were more than enough. The only thing I would say is pay attention when you put them on, I put a few holes in the butt of mine when I was sitting on a rock and pulling them up after a nice dip in the cold lake. However, they have not started to frey more after 2 months. | |

Deceptively warm | |

They don't look like much...hell you can even see through them if you hold them up to a light. But the temps this morning at Jackson Hole ranged from 5F all the way down to -2F (up at the summit) and I was able to stay warm with only these and my Arc'Teryx Stingray softshell pants. I did get a little cool/cold (not freezing) going up lifts and standing around, but when I was moving these kept me warm and dry.

| Prob shouldn't be typing this but I have been wearing these pants everyday since I got them (washed em once). They have yet to start stinking and frankly they are perfect. Since I have no heat in my house, I sleep with them on as well... If you are in a little house on the prairie mindset and want a pair of longjohns you can wear all the time like pa...get them | |

They are super comfy, and super warm. I was waring then back country skiing at 25F, I have to take them off they were too warm. For down hill where you are not producing much body heat they would have been perfect. So they are great for winter activities. And they roll up to a super small package for backpacking.
