Favorite Top

This top has year-round functionality for me so I bought myself a second one. I wear it as a winter base layer, although usually with a thin poly t-shirt underneath. Great versitility for Colorado ski slopes; really warm under an insulating layer on cold days, and light enough to wear under a shell alone on warm days. The zip neck looks nice going straight from the slopes to the bar. In warmer weather it is a nice pullover for cool mornings on the trail, and it weighs next to nothing so I always keep one in my daypack. It was also my go-to top for a September trek through the Scottish Highlands where it performed well in the constant mix of sun, rain, wind, and distilleries. The cons of this top are negligible. A spark from a campfire made it to my chest and instantly burned a tiny hole in it (so typical of polyester). The loose weave makes this top light and warm, but also makes it prone to snags when bushwhacking. (I'm sure Patagonia makes a top which is better-suited for this activity.) Great top. I love it.

A fine garment

I have switched to using the cap 2 zip neck from a cap 1 long sleeve just recently. I still wear the cap 1 in warmer weather but under 40 F I wear the cap 2 now, this shirt is incredible. I generally wear these climbing, both crag and Alpine, and I wear it when I go running as well. It wicks incredibly well and the fit is fantastic. It seems to be a lot more elastic than other baselayers, not sure if it is just that my others are all about ten years old or if this is a feature of the shirt. To those that are complaining about the smell factor. Not much you can do about that with any synthetic. Just deal with it. Your buddy next to you smells just as bad. I find it helps if you wash these in Tech Wash. All around, I 100% recommend this piece.

I am 5'11' with a 52" chest, 17" neck, 16" bicept, and weighing 210 lbs to give you of an idea for fitting. I am ahlethic built in the shoulders, chest, from lots of skiing, swimming, soccer, and biking. I knew the large should be ok.
My wife thought my old Patagonia is too thin and not working anymore after 2 yrs which was a size large.
I received this one and it was the same one, just newer style. This is a perfect product for me and I use it all the time. The odor control technology was the selling point for me. It wicks the sweat away and keeps me dry on colder runs.
I use this for skiing, running, cycling, and camping.
I will not leave home with out it.. The price is not back and is similar to REI when I bought it 2 yrs ago.

I like Patagonia products for their functionality and flair and this capilene zip neck top is all of that. The two tone contrast on the mango shirt is subtle and the shirt would pass for a semi-dressy in a pinch. Size Medium fits well and I consider myself between small and medium @ 38" chest, long torso and 32" arms, athletic build. I have since purchased 4 merino wool shirts by another fine maker, Stoic and in comparison to this polypropylene Capilene top, the merino wool is a hands down winner in the "no odor retention" category. Polypro, on my body is definitely a "one day" affair.....merino wool hangs in there for 3 days or more and I'm still acceptable to be around. Also, merino wool products wick moisture from the arm pit area, a nice feature whichever manufacturer you choose.

Love it

Love the Cap2 zipneck. I own several. I generally wear them 'loosely' by getting a size larger than I otherwise would wear. So, if you're not looking for something skin-tight to keep you warm, one of these works great as a 'coat' on semi-warm days. However, I'm quite annoyed that the new colors are hideous. I also don't care much for the cross dyes, even though my most recent purchase was one of them. Why can't there be a solid grey/blue/red/other colors? I'd like them more if they were that way. Something tells me that they used to be like that, but then someone wanted some variety. No need for the shirts to look like the Cap boxers. ;-) Regardless, I love the Cap2 zipnecks I have.
anaboly at Patagonia on 02/18/2011

This is the zipper version of the Capilene 2 shirt. I guess the zipper is a nice funtion for venting but I found it bothered me a bit so I went back to the crew style. Patagonia makes some fantastic baselayers in the Capilene 1,2,3 and 4 versions. This is the lightweight version and is a comfortable shirt to wear (except the zipper rubbed my chest), looks good and does a great job of wicking moisture. Not a warm shirt on it's own but works great as a baselayer.
Patagonia considers this a slim fit but I think of it more as an athletic fit, fits snug but not tight. It is not compression fit like some other baselayers.

Versatile Baselayer

I've worn this long-sleeve, zip-neck on ascents in the Sierra and Cascades and also used it while cragging. It's incredibly versatile. Easy to turn on the air conditioning by zipping it down and rolling up the sleeves. It provides some warmth, but isn't so hot that you can't use it to cover up from the sun on a day in the 60s to 70s. While zipped up, it even provides some shade for the back of your neck. I'm also a fan of the slim fit and length long enough that it stays tucked under a harness while climbing.
Jefferson at Patagonia on 09/02/2011

I cannot wear this shirt enough. I bought it for a Rainier attempt, but now I wear it all the time, the zip allows for easy venting and I wore it right over my skin for great wicking and quick dry. It has held up well after days and days of use and is a great layer to put on over a t-shirt on a rock climbing day. I was wavering between capilene or merion baselayer, but am super impressed with this one, and it costs a lot less than wool. Buy 2!

And on hot days

I bought this zip neck thinking I would use it primarily as a long underwear top underneath other layers in the cold. The first trip with it was June at City of Rocks. The storms blew off after the first day and at the temperature went up layers came off. Finally hot and sunny my Cap 2 stayed on and I appreciated the long sleeves and the bright orange color for hiding from the sun. It was my go to shirt for the hot days on the rest of the trip.

Came at just the right time

I purchased this about four weeks ago, and it turns out that my work has had me outdoors for nearly the entire month, so I've have the chance to wear this top almost daily. It's the perfect weight for late winter where the temps start in the teens and end in the 30's. The one negative I'd throw in is that I wish it was a bit longer. I have to bend over a lot to pick up gear and it does work its way out of my pants.

Negative Reviews:

Good but tight

I bought a medium and it is a slim cut, so a bit tight; especially around the neck. I like the fact that it is a athletic fit, since I am slim, but think the large might have been a better choice. Perhaps your sizing chart is off?
outdoorauthoralan at Patagonia on 11/01/2012

Poor Odor Control

Breaths well but the odor control is terrible, after one day the stench is impossible to bare.
Stay away from this line. Past years were fine. Same thing applies to Capilene 1 line from 2010.
bythner at Patagonia on 05/23/2011

Capilene lightweight zip neck

I bought zip tees in the past and they were fantastic. This one is a little thinner and not as durable. Looks like it is pilling around the neck.
Zolini at Patagonia on 03/02/2013

Neutral Reviews:

Wicks well, but not durable

I've had this base layer for a couple years. I must say that while it wicks moisture exceptionally well and smells less than the old lightweight capilene, it's not as durable. I have a lightweight cap piece that is eight years old and it's still going strong. My comparable capilene 2 zip neck has ten to twelve little holes all over it and a torn sleeve cuff after two years of moderate use. I love the weight of the fabric, but this piece has lost some durability somewhere along it's journey to base layer perfection. Maybe, I'm just becoming more hardcore as the years pass by...but I doubt it.
gearmunky at Patagonia on 08/11/2008

Capilene 2 Lightweight

AS with my Capilene mid weight, I find this garment nicely manufactured but itchy and bit "grabby" to the next layer. As a ski instructor and 3 season biker, I live in base layers and love the feel of the stretchy smooth tight fitting types of base layers that make you feel good wearing them and combine smoothly and comfortably with next layers. I like other Pategonia layers, like my two pullovers I use for next layers for skiing and biking. But I will not get much use out of these capilene first layers.
Gls747 at Patagonia on 11/19/2010

Ok, but too light.

Nice fit, finish, etc. seems almost too light weight, wish I would have gotten a little heavier weight.
