W's Capilene 3 Midweight Crew

Love the 3 Midweight crew. I wear it alone or with other layers. I have it in black and in brown. I purchased it in small and medium. Both fit well but differently. If I am going to wear it as a base layer I wear the small. If I am going to wear it over something else I wear the medium. It washes well. What I did find is that get can get several of the same size and they fit differently. I suggest that you try several of the shirts on in the same size and pick the one that fits best. I travel a lot for business and it packs well, doesn't wrinkle and can actually be worn as a shirt with business casual attire. Great purchase.

warm, cozy shirt

this is the second capilene 3 shirt i have purchased. they are warm, yet not too much so that you get overheated. wore this and the pants snowtubing last winter and it kept me very warm! i wear shirt around the house all winter too. it has held up well after many washings, hasn't pilled. i am a usually a size small or 4/6 in tops, however found the medium to be a better fit. the small was too tight in the arms and shoulders. i found that the latest capilene shirt is tighter in the sleeves than last years style. but still fits well.

nice weight

i like the weight on these because my house gets so cold. i'm wearing one of the two capilene 3 shirts as i type. however, i would like to say the neckline is a little tight for my liking. i think i would have preferred if the neckline was a little wider...but that's just because i don't like feeling restricted around the collar. i would imagine if i took this camping on a cold night, i would really appreciate the neckline then more so than i do in the comfort of my house. still would recommend because it's definitely warmer than a regular shirt.

Went back for more!

I ordered one of the W capilene midweight crews and the first time I wore it, I went back online and ordered 2 more ... the weight is perfect because it is warm but it breaths. I am comfortable at the beginning of a row when I am cold and at the end when I am warm, but I don't want to strip layers because it is too cold for my working muscles. Great fit -- fitted but not too snug and allows a lot of easy movement. Also very attractive with the side inserts. Love it!

In love with this product

This is my second Capilene 3 shirt and I absolutely love it. I am 5'5'' at 125 lbs and this fit almost perfectly; it is a little tight where it tapers in the forearm so I have a hard time rolling up the sleeves if I get warm during my runs but overall I love the weight, warmth, and coverage that this shirt offers. I also bought the pants but have not yet had the opportunity to test them out. It would be great if the Capilene 4 Expedition weight would come in a crew.
nhhikergal at Patagonia on 02/04/2012

Expectations are key here

I own about 10 Capilene layers - most recently I got two of the midweight crews. My biggest complain about the layers is that they get stinky within a couple of wears, after which the stench is impossible to wash out completely. With this being said, Capilene is my favorite layer for running and snowshoeing, when I tend to sweat a lot anyway, but wash frequently, so smell doesn't matter. Bottom line is, I find these layers soft, comfortable, and the various weights are certainly a huge plus for a life in the mountains.
Outdoorgirl907 at Patagonia on 03/09/2013

sizing running larger than previous years

I purchased the purple in size medium - I have the royal blue cap 3 (also in medium) from 2 years ago, and it fits perfectly. The sizing has changed to run much larger, and I wish I had purchased a small - but fear the arms would be too short! Still comfy, and the longer length is nice, but it is really baggy in the midsection. Wearing a tee over it is out of the question, I recommend buying a size down as this is NOT "fitted" true to size.
snowgurl at Patagonia on 03/28/2011

Works Perfectly

I just purchased this a few weeks ago and I was finally able to use it last weekend for my 10 mile hike up Big Slide mountain in the ADK. It kept me dry and warm and did not even get snagged when half of our hike was off the trail through streams and thick brush. Great shirt, I will totally purchase more of these for different seasons. Great quality. I also ordered an XS and I'm 5'2" 120ibs if that is helpful for anyone, and the shirt fits perfectly.
Lolita at Patagonia on 03/31/2012

Great, but bigger than before

I love the Capilene products. They are perfect for my early morning runs and trail races and are really wonderful for layering when it's extra cold. If you have purchased Capilene crews before, be aware that this year's design was made looser through the midsection than in the past. I wore a medium before, but after getting mediums this time, I had to take them back and exchange them for smalls. I prefer the tighter fit from before; although, the new fabric used in this year's shirt is softer.
RunMox at Patagonia on 10/09/2010

Warm!

I don't go out into the snow very often, so when I do, I want to be warm! I bought this & wore it skiing in Colorado in February - and it did the trick! I've since worn it around my house on weekends & my husband has mentioned that the house seemed chilly to him, but I didn't even notice (and I'm normally the one that gets cold!). I think this would be great to wear for layers with fall camping, too.

Negative Reviews:

replacement layer

This shirt was supposed to be fitted. I got it, tried it on and was not happy at all with the fit of this product. I ordered a medium because all of my Patagonia pieces are medium. While the arms, shoulders and bust fit but the rest of it was unflattering, not fitted. I did not feel confident that this product was going to replace and perform as well as my other base-layer that it was replacing.
LzzL at Patagonia on 02/04/2012

Didn't like

I found the fit and fabric of the crew and pants to not meet my expectations. The fabric was itchy and didn't have enough stretch in it for the purpose of running in winter. The sleeve length also wasn't as long as I would have liked. I returned both items right away.
brazzshopper at Patagonia on 02/12/2012
I like the color and the fabric but will be sending it back because it has a weird... poofiness... at the bottom where the seams are near the hips. It sticks out kind of funny, which I find distracting.
MMtoMD at Patagonia on 11/19/2011

shirt picked first time i wore it

I love the fit but the shirt has picks on it after only wearing it once.

Neutral Reviews:

different from last version

I'm 5'3", 120 lbs, a solid small in most patagonia shirts, so I ordered a small in purple. It's way too big on me, so I gave it away to avoid shipping cost back. She's a solid medium. I'm not into skin tight clothing, but I like it fitting, especially a baselayer. I would size down unless you want it really baggy. I have two capilene 3's from few years ago, and I love them. I wish they didn't change it. Also, the material in the previous version seems a little thinner, softer, and breathable than this, but they keep me very warm. I just didn't like the new material, the sizing (too big, a little bit too long for me) of this new shirt. If I got an XS, I may have liked it.
xenatri at Patagonia on 03/25/2011

runs large

I usually wear XS regular fit and S slim fit (Patagonia), I am 5'5'' 123lbs. Got in XS (states slim fit) and it is way too large. Also the fit is a little odd at the seams coming towards bust from underarms, it puffs out a little on each side. Unfortunately this is the smallest size and I cannot go to kids sizes since I am 32D. I am keeping it just because I need the type of shirt for the upcoming trip. At least the size needs to be changed to "regular fit."
shopper11 at Patagonia on 12/05/2011

Fits large and a little itchy

I have the Capilene 1 and 2 in XS, and they fit fabulously. Purchased the Capilene 3 in two different colors and both of them fit way large. The XS are more like large S's, very baggy and long. For some strange reason they also make my skin itch at the neck and shoulders the same way a wool product does. Maybe it's the way the fabric is woven? I have the Capilene 3 bottoms and they are comfy and true to size, but the tops just didn't work for me.
Sammie at Patagonia on 05/05/2012

good fit but weird fabric

I bought this to replace an old Capilene 3 shirt I love but I don't care for this newer fabric. It's not as soft or stretchy as the old stuff and it definitely feels synthetic.
I like the fit. It's a bit loose for a base layer but that's ok with me. I like that it's longer in the torso than my old shirt.
I returned this because of the feel of the fabric. I'll keep using my old Cap 3 shirt for now.
mickey at Patagonia on 03/08/2012

Difficult Sizing

I purchased this in an xs, which is what I normally get from Pat. This shirt is kind of roomy. Since it's a midweight, I guess Pat is allowing room for other layers underneath but it seems a little too roomy. Nice color, though; lagoon blue.
ShellBelle at Patagonia on 04/17/2012

wish it fit better

have several capilene tops from the last several years but this year's fit differently. Wish the arms were longer and the body was cut slimmer. Feels baggier than my other capilene crews and the arms aren't long enough.
anniegd11 at Patagonia on 01/31/2011

Sizing Switch

Beware that the cap 3 line has gone through a major redesign. I loved the old S sized shirts, now I swim in the new S and the XS has sleeves that are a bit too short.
