The Men's Capilene 3 Midweight Zip-Neck by Patagonia is a fundamental - to be worn for weeks on alpine routes, washed in glacial streams and dried in the slipstream of a bus window. Patagonia's new Capilene 3 Midweight provides excellent insulation and ultimate comfort next to the skin.
The most versatile and fastest wicking of their performance baselayers, its new fabric offers even better stretch, durability, wicking and breathability, and has faster dry times. Brushed on the inside for warmth, it's soft and compressible, and the smooth jersey exterior glides smoothly under layers. The low-bulk zip-neck makes for easy venting. Details include raglan sleeves and underarm panels for unlimited mobility and offset shoulder seams to eliminate pack-strap chafe.

Looks Great, less filling
Cap 3 has become my new standard base layer for the dead of winter. It keeps me warm, but not too warm, breathes well, never stinks, (even after sweating in it all day), and looks great too. The zip-neck makes it easy to adjust the "thermostat". The only downside I can find so far is that the stretchy arms make the cuffs try to "bunch out" from underneath the cuff of my puffy. Maybe less stretchy "gauntlet" style cuff might eliminate the very minor problem. Don't even think about eliminating the stretchiness in the elbows and shoulders. This problem could be solved by blending the Cap 3 material in the cuff area with a beefier less stretchy material. This seems like it may make the design a little expensive to manufacture. Overall, its a fairly insignificant problem. Cap 3 avoids sticking to your skin and bunching up when you sweat, making for a super-comfy baselayer.
good stuff
I am 72 years old, and I showshoe, ski, and winter camp. I wear wool and canvas in the winter (-30F - +30F). My only concession to modern clothing is Patagonia. Cap. 3 is good long underwear, and its real advantages for me: 1) I wear it under a wool shirt and it allows me to tolerate warmer temperatures inside tents, vehicles, or buildings - I don't overheat. 2) it works really well as a long sleeve shirt in the spring, summer and fall. I am 6' 0", 200 lbs., and I wear an XL. This years' stuff has more room in it; sleeves are too long for me, so I just turn them up, and I like the old tight fit as well as the new, looser fit. I also wear Cap.3 under wool underwear tops - keeps the sweat down some. This is good stuff.
Great cool weather shirt
I love these zip-neck crews. I have a variety of capillene 2 and 3s along with a merino 2 thrown in. I use these for cool weather cycling as well as workouts at the gym, and for just wearing as a casual shirt. The fit is accurate (m) and color selection wide. Zip-neck allows good ventilation when warm. Only complaint is warranty. :) Within two weeks of receipt, i had a bicycling accident and it had to be cut off in the ER. Guess that is not considered normal wear and tear or a defect. Kidding aside, this shirt feels and looks great. I eschew the advertising-laden cycling shirts for these, as these are so versatile and "quiet."
Patagonia makes some fantastic baselayers in the Capilene 1,2,3 and 4 versions. This is the midweight zip version and is a comfortable shirt to wear, looks good and does a great job of wicking moisture. The zipper is a nice option to vent if you start getting a little warm. I have noticed a significant difference in warmth between this shirt and the Capilene 1 and 2.
Patagonia considers this a slim fit but I think of it more as an athletic fit, fits snug but not tight. It is not compression fit like some other baselayers.
In most conditions, this baselayer and a vest under a good shell is a great combination.
More than I expected
I purchased this cap three for backpacking and to sleep in when the temperature dropped. It worked like I thought it would to keep me toasty on cool mornings and at night when the temps dropped. I tried it as a top layer with a cap 2 base layer while playing tennis on a sub 40 degree day and it kept me warm and wicked really well. It dried in about 15 minutes while my cotton wearing friends were adding more layers. I now own all caps 1 through 4 and I have one on all the time. Most functional shirts made. Now, I am saving for a nano puffy.
Stripes rule.
Been buying Patagonia clothes for over 20 years. Thereâs always a tweak and an improvement to all categories. The designs and new fit is always noteworthy. Some things go, and some preserve. Miss the Wallace Berry baselayer, but there are so many cool new things that itâs a constant journey.
The capilene midweight that I got last month is great. The new fit and stitching give it a nice contour fit, and the stripes are a nice break from the solid color scheme. Patagonia always creates things that last and that aspect of attention to quality assures Iâll be back to see what the next innovations will bring.

no better baselayer
This was pretty much the only thing I wore on my recent climbing trip to Indian Creek in March; I wish I'd had it in Joshua Tree in December. It fits close to the skin and retains an astounding amount of body heat - far more than my previous baselayers - while still managing to: a) breathe b) not get totally soaked with sweat if I was active. After a week of crawling up sandstone offwidths, I had succeeded in only a slight amount of stitching damage, which is a true testament to this shirt's ruggedness as well. An awesome choice for any adventure in the cold.
I love all things Pantagonia
Truly I do, from the fleece pullover I bought 24 years ago that still looks good even tho' I wear it for all kinds of things, including every time I ski (OK a couple of the neck snaps wore out..), to this new mid-weight base layer I am wearing for the 1st time today just around the house. I'm only giving it 4 stars now but I could revise upward. I have found Pantagonia products to be incredibly durable and stylish, with technical wear more breathable and more comfortable over a wider temperature range than any other products I have owned. Keep up the great work people!!
super versatile
I look for well designed, well sewn products that serve multiple purposes - and the cap3 zip t is remarkable in this regard. As an endurance athlete this piece is the workhorse underlayer. When traveling I save space, as I wear the cap3 zip t one day as casual wear (because it looks good and is comfortable) then the next day I wear it for my run, ski, or bike ride. It pairs really well with either a Nine Trails jacket or vest. If you limit yourself to just one under layer - this is the one.
best yet
I think I've had nearly every generation of this Capilene staple, right back to the first generation. The current version is the best yet. The fabric is superb - breathable and fast-drying by itself, surprisingly warm under a shell. The fit is good, with long enough arms, seams that don't chafe, and a very comfortable zip-neck collar. I wear these under an R1 for cold days out ice climbing or snowshoeing, or over a Cap 1 shirt for warmer days. It's my second layer for backpacking trips as well. A refined design with the best fabric yet.
Negative Reviews:
They changed it
Be warned that Patagonia changed the sizing, fit and style. As others have said the sleeves and length grew by several inches, so now I look ridiculous in a large. The cut is now very body hugging so do not plan on wearing it as a stand alone shirt. These used to be my favorite shirt, please please change it back!
Terrible Sizing
I'm a pretty average thin 5'9"/145 lbs. The small fits like a baggy t-shirt. This is supposed to be slim fit?The XS would fit OK but the arms are 2 inches too short. Patagonia's sizing seems to keep getting worse.
Sizing Has Changed
I love these pullovers, but can no longer wear them because the sizing has changed. The arms are too long on the Large and chest is too narrow on the Medium. This is unfortunate.

This is called a mid weight product I would call it a light weight product for cold Michigan winters this does not provide the insulation I had expected or need.

Note the change in the CAP 3
I purchased this after falling in love with the previous iteration of the capilene 3 zip neck. It is so amazing and versatile I wanted another. In the most recent old style, I wear a medium that fits very well. I am disappointed in the sizing of this newest generation, as a medium has proved to be too big even after washing and using.
needs a few adjustments
The fabric is good and works well, but they need to go back to tighter cuffs/forearms and smooth seams. This is a baselayer after all. That would make for easier to slip stuff over without the sleeves sliding up and more comfort with a pack. (the old flat seams also seem more sturdy than the current seams)
Unfortunate fit changes
The new fit does (44441) not fit like my older version (44440) purchased in 2011. Chest and upper arms are wider creating a baggy fit. Contoured seams appear strong but the more subtle paths of the seams on the old design. I hope any future updates with revert to the old tried and true design
Capilene Mid Weight Zip Neck
Nicely made and nice looking but I find the Capilene itchy and also "grabs" a bit the next layer. As a ski instructor I live in base layers. I find the smoother, stretchy tight fitting types more comfortable and combine better with the next layer.
"New" seams--meh.
I have had a cap 3 1/2 zip for 5 years--and it is durable like steel. I purchased a new one in November--and the new seam cover stitching is starting to catch. I'm afraid that it may not prove nearly as durable...
Capilene 3 zip neck
Great base layer. Use it for guiding in the summer, and Ski Patrol in the winter. Like being able to open the neck up to let some air in, and the wet stuff out. NO SMELL YET!
