The Women's Down Sweater Vest by Patagonia is your go-to piece for light weight insulation. Impossible to confuse with the sweater vests found at golf courses and bingo parlors, ours comes packed with ultra-toasty 800-fill down that traps heat in alpine conditions. It has a minimalist design that practically floats, and is so compact it stuffs into its own stretch-mesh internal pocket (with a carabiner clip-in loop). The innovative, superlight 100% all-recycled polyester shell (1.4-oz 22-denier) with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish provides wind and water protection as well as a high tear-strength; quilting stabilizes the down. This vest gets more wear than anything else in my closet. It's warm, it's light, it's comfy, it's layer-able, and it's fantastic! From October through April, I wear this layered over my sweatshirts and under my jacket shells out on the frozen tundra of Minnesota. It's truly my favorite clothing; I feel like I cuddled into a toasty sleeping bag every time I put it on. It's also easy to clean in the washer and dryer (hint: make sure to throw a clean tennis ball in the dryer with the vest to prevent feather clumping). It does lose a few little feathers here and there (my only complaint), but this is one piece of clothing that is worth twice what it costs!
I'm on the fence about which size I'm keeping. The XS is slim and the waist curves in really nicely. The chest is slightly snug, though, and my boobs squish down. I'm a 32" bust. Not considered large at all. The small, however, is baggier everywhere else and it fits much less flattering as a result. It's boxier for sure but there's more breathing room in the chest. This info might help someone who is borderline XS/S and is pretty curvy. Thankfully, with Backcountry's return policy I can decide carefully without making a snap decision being pressured to get it back within 30 days.
Gave this to a friend. She loves it. It was a replacement for one of these that fell apart in the wash. Hopefully the new one will be more durable?
But it is very warm and stylish, which makes up for durability issue (but deducts 2 stars)
I like this vest, especially the "Patagonia" trademark I am finding of nice, long length in their products. This particular one seems fragile in the material, though, I sent it back (had a small hole). It is still especially warm as a layering piece.
