The Patagonia Women’s Down Sweater is actually not a sweater at all. It’s actually a super warm insulated jacket. Those crazy Patagonia Outerwear folks must be losing their minds. At least they are good at making premium 800-fill-power goose down insulated women’s jackets. I wonder if calling it a down sweater when its actually a Superlight, windproof and water-resistant shell is false advertising? Someone should call Patagonia out. It could be a showdown. There could be gunslingers involved. No real guns though, just water pistols.

warm and light
i have been looking for a down jacket that is warm and does not make me too much like a michelin man since i am 5'1 and 150# and also top heavy. this jacket fits the criteria the best of all the different down jackets that i have tried on. the jacket is light and does pack into itself into a little ball, which i find is good for traveling. usually, i have problems finding patagonia jackets that fits my shape since most of the sleeves are too long. if u are petite like me, this jacket is a good one to try. length-wise in sleeves and torso are very petite-friendly :) yes, the feathers does start to come out almost immediately. in my case, the second day and continues to come out but i love this jacket. i got a second one already for myself and bought my mom the longer version. the sizes for this jacket runs a bit big since i am not normally a medium but that is what i fitted into (nice feeling for the psyche ;) i also recently took this jacket with me as a layering jacket (to be used under snow shell jacket) for a recent trip to beijing and harbin, china (a little south of the siberian plains) in january that had minus 30 degree weather. and i got away with just wearing a pair of wool thermals, t-shirt, fleece jacket under this down jacket in the daytime in harbin (except for the times that the wind blew since this jacket is not wind-resistant) and i am from sunny california (silicon valley to be exact) so i am not used to cold, freezing weather. this down jacket is thin enough that you can wear multiple layers under it without looking like a stuff sausage and layer over it without feeling uncomfortable. this jacket is very versatile. i have worn it in 40 degree weather to minus 30 degree weather and still felt warm and comfortable. another good thing that i have found with this jacket is that u can wash it in the washing machine in cold water in delicate cycle and dry it in the low heat cycle for 30 minutes but u do lose the "newness" shine of the jacket and it does smell a little like a wet duck but then it is made with down ;)

I looooove this jacket. I bought it for myself as a birthday present to use for travel and backpacking. I wanted a jacket that was warm enough for cool fall evenings and that packed down small. I was sick of trying to carry a bulky fleece in my pack.
I am so happy with my purchase. It squishes down to the size of a grapefruit and weighs next to nothing. Plus it's warm. I use it for backpacking and when I'm traveling, I can fit it in my carry-on purse. I'll even use it as a pillow on the plane.
Warmth-wise, it's perfect for fall and spring and even colder days if you have a warm sweater and a water-proof shell to layer over it. I wouldn't wear it in the depths of winter, but I wore it on a backpacking trip where the temp got down to around the freezing mark and I was happy.

Good Quality
This is one of my favorite jackets. I also bought the vest which has the same fit as the jacket but does get a little more fitted around the waist. I wear them year round. I could not give it 5 stars for two reasons. One is that the drawcord to tighten up the lower part of the jacket is on one side only. It should have one on each side to get a more fitted look. The other is really only because of the way it fits ME. I have large shoulders & D size breasts. Kind of like an 8 bottom & 12 top. The medium in the jacket fits me perfect around the midsection but is constricting around the top so I went to a large. Although the jacket is not the most flattering for me b/c it is big around the waist I still love the way it feels. I have always understood that Patagonia makes their clothing gear toward a rock climbers body. Small up top, narrow waist & larger hips. So knowing that I usually only buy certain jackets, shorts or fleece pants. The watergirl series tends to fit me better. You'll have this jacket forever and it is worth the money. Do not buy a knockoff like a Land's end, it will not fare the same quality.
LOVE!
I love everything that I get from Patagonia, and this jacket in the fennel color is no exception! It is fitted enough to be flattering and just puffy enough to be super toasty. I never thought I would wear a jacket in the house, but this one I don't want to take off :) The first day I wore it, the first time I was out of the house I had two different women stop me and tell me how beautiful this jacket is. I have coveted this jacket since last year and finally pulled the trigger to get it. I am so glad I did! My sister and I have been super competitive since birth, and when she saw me in it, she asked if she could get a matching one. That says a lot if you have sisters like us :) That was the best compliment I could get! This jacket is super squishy and super light but warm at the same time. I am already looking at a different color for my next one. The size was true to size. I am 5'4" and 130 and got a medium. I could have gotten a small, but the med fits great! It is totally windproof which is fantastic! The colors in this line are all gorgeous! You won't be disappointed.
Great for travel!
I live in Hawaii so a down coat is not something I've owned for decades. However, I travel a lot and will be going to colder temps this winter.
I would give this 5 stars except for the length. After wearing this coat in Vegas (50 degrees) over a t-shirt and in Utah (25 degrees) over 2 layers of wool, I found it to be very versatile. But just about 3-4" too short. I found I had to keep tugging the coat down while sitting and always had to shift things around when I stood up.
Also - it's not a jacket you can layer under too much. For me, I went with a Med. as it fit me best with 1 light layer underneath. I can't wear an R2 under it (too tight in the arms). So I made the sacrifice - M for nice fit with little layering under. Large was just too big and allowed too much air to get in without heavy layers.

One of the best pieces of clothing ever
I'm 5'4 135 pounds 36C and the small fits perfect -- a long sleeve shirt fits under comfortably. The down sweater also fits really nicely under a variety of coats. The sleeves are a little long, but I have short arms (sleeves fully extended covers most of my hand). It's not a problem b/c they tuck under on themselves nicely and lay flat. This is seriously one of the best garments ever! It's so light, soft, comfortable, and warm. I don't want to take it off. The cut is super flattering (please don't change it!!) -- slimming and sleek. I got the natural color, which is a beautiful vanilla color. It's unusual and flattering. The only problem is you can definitely see the feathers through the material. At a distance you can't tell, but up close the dark feathers look a bit like faint muddy splotches. My first reaction was I needed to exchange it for a different color b/c of the feathers showing through thing, but I think I just have to deal with it b/c I love color so much (and I don't love any of the other colors). If the dark feathers didn't show through this would be the perfect piece of clothing.
Perfect Scooter/School Companion
I live in NorCal where the weather dips down into the 20s in the winter at night but the days rarely fall below the 40s. Being a student who rides a scooter though, it's pretty freakin' cold at 7am. This is the best piece of down outerwear I've found - it's warm, windproof, and light. I have other down jackets but they're too heavy or bulky and layering is rarely an option. With the Down Sweater, I can wear just a t-shirt or a fleece or a sweater and baselayer and ride around in comfy toastiness. It's especially great that this jacket packs so small so I can stuff it in my backpack when it's too warm. AND this is the first item I've had that packs into its own pocket that doesn't take 20 minutes and planning to get it in there! I got the white one first and will admit that I thought it was a little boxy, but it has so many comfort possibilities that I ended up buying the cherry colored one, too, just in case I needed a backup. Totally for the person who loves the warmth of down but not a heavy jacket! DO IT! :)
Fits us big girls, too!
THANK YOU, PATAGONIA, FOR MAKING CLOTHING FOR BIG GIRLS THAT ACTUALLY FITS! I'm 5'8" and 210. I think most manufacturers believe that large people sit around in front of their computers and televisions, eating chips and drinking soda...so not true. WE NEED OUTDOOR CLOTHING THAT FITS US AS WELL AS SLIM PEOPLE! This is the third or fourth item I've bought from Patagonia that I've been tickled pink about. The XL arms are a little long for me, but I have short arms to begin with. The hemline is a little snug, but that's normal for me, as well. Otherwise, the fit is roomy enough for me to wear a sweater or fleece underneath. I have no problems zipping it, and I like the fact that I don't feel like a Macy's Thanksgiving Parade Balloon! As for performance, the temps last night were in the low 20s, so I wore a fleece underneath. My husband and I went for a short walk and I ended up being a little too warm. Can't wait to take this camping!!! Totally worth the money - GO GET ONE NOW!!!
Sweet, warm, and light
The first year I saw these, I passed on them because they were so light that they didn't seem warm, and looked like the Michelin kid. The second year I picked one up just to see what the hype was about. Yes, it is really, really warm. I was amazed at how seemingly so little down can be so warm. The "thick bicep" look does go away a little as you wear it - I think it's due to the crease line on the fabric going away. Recently washed it with the Down Wash by hand, and dried in the dryer with tennis balls. Kind of wish I didn't dry it with tennis balls, because it got beat up a little and are losing down a lot faster than they were before. I would just dry it and fluff it by hand, like you would with duvet comforters.
Just for the record, I do like the high loft down sweater better for the fit - the length is longer, and the cut is closer to the body. Didn't like the wider quilting though.

Puffy...
Its a down jacket. It is supposed to be puffy. And the thickness of the puff is great. Warm and cozy, but not pillow-worthy. The green color is super bright and nice. Its extremely light and seems like it would hold up well. The problem is the cut is just too wide. The upper arms are suitable for steroidal body builders. This isn't too bad once the crease falls out a bit, and could be a big perk if you want to do some heavy duty layering and still have full movement. Really, this fits as it says. "Regular fit." I just wish they would make it a slim fit cut instead. I really wanted to love this jacket and wear it every day all winter long. But I don't like the look of it. (Also note, with a size D, I think the puffiness is especially unflattering. Might not be a problem with less up top.) So if you don't mind looking fluffy, then you'll love this jacket. I'm going to try my luck with the slim fit down sweater vest.

Definitely just a sweater
I ordered this "coat" online and knew as soon as I opened the package it would be going back. This is a very light coat and I can't imagine it would even keep me warm in 50 degree weather. I am 5'0" and 98 pounds and wear an xs in just about everything. This coat is huge for the size! The sleeves are about 2 inches too long and I could fit at least three thick sweaters or sweatshirts under this coat. I ordered the blue and it is a really pretty color but that is about the only good thing I have to say about it. This light coat is definitely not worth the [$] price tag.
W down Sweater
I like the down sweater very much but not the off white color because the off white fabric is translucent and since the inside lining color is gray, you can see the down which gives an overall mottled appearance of the sweater. I asked many people what they thought and none liked it. One person thought it looked grungy. To me it looks like it is dirty. I have seen older versions of the off white sweater and the color looked more opaque and solid. If you change the appearance, I would buy it but I will probably look at other brands at this moment.
Sadly, I will have to return this one.

I got the creme/white color and the material is so thin that you can see the feathers through it. It looks like it is dirty and a cheap jacket. Also, I have lost a few feathers so I am concerned about the quality. The fit was just right though, slimming but also warm. However, regardless of the the nice fit because of it's cheap appearance it will have to go back.
Not happy with Women's Down Sweater
I returned the Women's Down Sweater. This was a gift for my mom, and she wasn't happy with it. The down filling showed through the shell covering (many of the feathers were dark); also, my mom thought this piece of clothing is too short - she's not that tall (5'4"). This sweater should come down further on the hips. Also, the sleeves were too wide - not form-fitting enough, so the entire sweater looked too blocky.
I wore my new jacket on a field trip to take students to a leadership conference. One of the kids remarked on the way back that down was coming out of my arm. Sure enough there was a tear on the arm!
No wonder it's so light. The fabric is thin and not rip stop! I had already tossed the receipt and package so had to get the cleaners to patch it up.
great quality and all, the only downside (big one) is that the color i bought was not as described (white).
the color is so light that you can see through , and this makes it a nad looking jacket, because instead of being withe, it was sort of grey and withe all over the jacet as you could see the down inside that was not all of the same color
feathers show through
LOVE the (black) down sweater vest. Disappointed in the sheerness of the (Bougainvillea - pink) down sweater I just ordered. The feathers (white and brown) can be seen through the fabric. Love the color, but I think it looks odd to see feathers through the fabric. The inside lining color appears to be dark enough to hide the feathers, maybe that's closer to the magenta color offering.
Very Disappointing
I bought this coat and absolutely loved it until it started losing feathers. That happened almost immediately so I took it back and got a second one. This one is losing feathers at a much quicker rate than the first one so I guess it's going back too. I love the idea of the coat. It's lightweight and warm, but at this rate it won't last long.
Not Natural!
It's a great light jacket. Love it! BUT I ordered it in Natural and the color is awful! Light yellowish and you can see all the dark feathers through it! Not a good color at all, I thought it was going to be more of an oatmeal color. It's a nasty looking color. Great Jacket just don't get that color!
White Not Right
Followed washing instructions. Down lumped and shows through the white fabric...looks dirty grey. I have a green and a blue jacket that are great. I love these jackets. The white fabric is too thin and down shows through. Remove washing instructions and say dry clean only. White jacket is not recommended unless heavier fabric is used.

Great for layering, but not durable enough.
I really, really hate being cold. I have let many a cold day keep me from a trip to the crag or a day on the slopes. I wanted a down jacket to help change that. When I got this jacket, I was pretty thrilled with my choice of color (the bright blue), and initially thrilled by the overall look and feel. It is certainly a warm jacket, especially for the size. However, the fabric of this jacket is incredibly fragile--I got a snag in the jacket almost immediately. If you are someone who likes to beat up your clothing, I would suggest staying away from this jacket. I plan to use mine as a warm layer for backpacking trips, but I bought something more durable for climbing days.
Cute but down shows thru shell -- not so cute!
I absolutely love this jacket and the large fits me well...I am 5'5" and about 145 lbs. It isn't tight, as the medium was on me -- I tried one on in another store. It has enough room to wear another sweater or layer underneath totally comfortably. BUT, the Birch White color has a big problem...you can see the down through the shell fabric which gives it this funny mottled appearance. So unfortunately, I'm going to have to return it. I even went to a local store to check out another one and it too had the same issue, so i think it's just that the white shell is too light and too thin to block out the down underneath.
didn't fit me
I have been looking for a iight-weight down jacket or coat and when this went on sale I ordered one. Although it was well constructed and warm, the small did not fit me, it was too wide (boxy) and short through the body. I am 5'8", 120 lbs and long through the waist and this was fitted for a shorter stockier person. It didn't work for me so I returned it. I wish more of Patagonia's tops were longer and narrower through the body to fit me.
Sleeves way too long
The jacket is lightweight and very cute, but the sleeves are at least 4 inches too long (my arms are normal length). The jacket is also bulky around the shoulders. I called Patagonia to see if I should exchange the Small for an Extra Small. The sleeves on the XS are only 1 inch shorter. My husband had the same problem with a men's version of this jacket. We will have to return them.
High tear-strength not really all that high
I loved this jacket for three weeks until a dog jumped on me and ripped the fabric. I would not recommend getting this jacket if you were in danger of encountering anything that could snag it, perhaps rough tree bark on a cross-country trail, or anything with sharp edges. In safe environments, it's a winner. I wish I lived in such an environment.
a sheepish complaint
I love patagonia's gear and have wanted one of these for years. But I have been really disappointed in the ripstop shell. I have little puffs of down coming out in all kinds of places and I have only used the jacket casually. I bought it for backpacking and climbing, but I'm just not pleased with the shell.
Fragile
The jacket tore at the bottom seam 3 days after puchase. I'm a big girl so it never really fit right, very tight across the chest. If you have a large chest try it on before you buy it. I wear a 14 and could barely zip up the XL. Very nice for people with thinner frames.
More of a fashion statement
Used this on an 8 day backpack trip in the sierras. Jacket fits great and definitely stylish but not as warm as I would have expected. Used it over baselayer and fleece and was still cold. Upon returning it to store was told by sales staff that jacket is more for fashion statement than warmth.
love it with reservations
I absolutely love the style and weight of the down sweater but have been disappointed that the feathers have had a tendency to poke through the fabric, leaving a hole if you try to pull them out or if you try to poke them back in which is hard to do
Do not buy white!
I feel bad giving this jacket only 3 stars, because I love most everything about it, except that I bought white. The down shows through and makes the jacket look dirty and mottled. I am returning it for a different color ( which will most likely get 5 stars!
