kinda magic

I'm a little bit fascinated at how this thing can fit over my bust as a dress and my hips as a skirt...and look good both ways. I bought this dress for a vacation in southern Spain and I wanted a few versitile items...this fit the bill. I am 5'5", 130 lbs, small chest, bubble butt and I got a small. However, although it looks fine, I think the XS would have perhaps been tighter to begin with but would have held up better through the day, as it does stretch out a bit. Thank goodness for the halter string, because there is no way this dress is tight enough in the bust to be strapless, but tying the string around my neck a little tighter helped me to avoid any embarrassing moments. I am overall happy with this dress, but in future incarnations, I think it would help to have a bit more stretch in the waist/bust portion of the dress.

Perfect for travel--lightweight and versitile.

This is a great item to take on a trip to someplace warm or for summer. It is a skirt or a dress and is very easy to pack. I got the bright print one and wore it as a skirt with a bright green tee and also with a white tee. s It is mid thigh length as a skirt which works with flats or heels, although that may not appeal as much to a teeny bopper. I also got it in black and, again, it is good as a skirt, with a patterned tee, or a more dressy little strapless dress. As a sundress it's a good length--just above knees--and is cute alone or with a cardigan or shawl, if needed. This is perfect for travel and versitility.

Beware the stripes

I have an hourglass figure, but I'm not tiny. I'm 6' tall and 155 lbs. I have a 36" rib cage and wide shoulders. I bought this in size M and the Nakashima Stripe: Cosmo Pink which has diagonal stripes. Unfortunately for me, when wearing this as a skirt, the stripes fall in such a way that they over accentuate my hips. If I wear it as a dress, the stripes fall differently so it is flattering. Maybe I will try a solid color to wear as a skirt, because I would really like the length since I'm so tall. The medium size is a perfect fit for me. I have not washed the skirt yet, so I can't comment on how the material holds up.

Love it!

I love this skirt! The fit is flattering and I love how it's cut and how it swings when I walk. The fabric is very comfortable and with the pattern it's easy to pair with a variety of different colored tops. My only concern is to see how the black part of the fabric fades with washing. But since it's hidden in a pattern, it may not be that noticeable. I've had several instances of other black skirts (Prana in particular) fading badly with washing so that it looks old and worn like a ratty t-shirt. Fingers crossed for this one holding up. But I do love the cut and am going back today to get another one.

I'm not a huge skirt-wearing-person, I mostly wear skirts while camping, or because they are easier to change into after a bike ride. I am also "pear shaped" and have a hard time finding skirts that work well for me, but this one is a gem. I loved it so much last year that I bought a 2nd one in a different color this year! The waist will stretch a touch after wearing it for a while (I don't find it to be a problem though!), but always shapes right up again after washing. The fabric is extremely comfortable and I find it to be the perfect weight for the summer, not too light, not too heavy.

Love this skirt

The drape on this fabric is just the best. It looks and feels great. It's quite thin but not too thin, and it flutters around nicely with any air movement. I'm tall (6' 0") so the longer length is perfect--not too short like everything else usually is. I plan on wearing this skirt all the time when the warm weather arrives. This is actually my second of this skirt. I was initially disappointed because the fabric (a print pattern) faded a bit more than I hoped even after the first wash. I like the feel of the fabric so much that it doesn't even bother me anymore. Hopefully the second one (black) wears well.

Perfect Travel Skirt/Dress

I purchased two of the Kamala skirts to take with me to Thailand & China. In the extreme heat of Bangkok I wore it as the halter dress. While it was lightweight and comfortable I would have liked to have more lycra in the bandeau. I found the back of it sagging esp since there are no straps to hold it up. For the cool evenings in China I wore it as a skirt with a little tank top and sweater. It took up very little space in my suitcase, is lightweight and laundered beautifully with no ironing needed.

Great skirt

This is the second Kalama skirt I have purchased. I love them because of the soft natural organic cotton material and because of the simple beautiful shape. An added bonus is the dress option, but that shows too much skin for my liking, so I use these skirts as skirts. They are easy to dress up or down. My favorite way to wear them is with a t shirt and flip flops or Patagonia's "Maia breathe" shoes to work. I'm an active pear shaped, 5'2", 140#, and I wear a small in this skirt.

Very Versatile

I first saw this skirt/dress while on vacation, but they did not have my size. The skirt was still on my mind when I returned home so I went and tried it on at a Patagonia store I got my normal size and it fits perfectly. I've been wearing it as a dress and as a skirt a lot during this hot summer. I also purchased a Patagonia cotton tank to pair when I wear this item as a skirt. I bought the cream skirt/dress and I receive a lot of compliments!!

Best.Skirt.Ever.

My only lamentation is that Patagonia doesn't make this in more colors. (And I kind of wish they would make it all organic cotton instead of a Tencel mix...) Perfect length (mid-calf) for work and everything else (I don't really like showing my legs). I'm 5'7" 120 lbs and the small fits perfectly. Super comfy but hip/cute enough to dress up. I would never wear this as a dress (don't like the look at all) but I guess it's cool you have that option. Please don't stop making this skirt, Patagonia!

Negative Reviews:

not for hourglass figures

I was intrigued by the idea of a garment that could be either skirt or dress, and I did hope to wear it as a skirt. I won't be doing so. If you are at all hourglassy -- if your waist is noticeably smaller than are your hips -- then what passes as a waistband just flops there. The waist can't be adjusted; the only solution would be to wear it very, very low on the hips -- not my style! Not even when I was much younger! I will keep the garment, rather than returning it, because that floppy, useless gathered waistband does, in fact, become an effective bandeau, and the skirt does really turn into a simple, brief, lightweight halter dress (maybe a bit too skimpy for a mature woman in her prime, no matter how fit, to wear just anywhere, but fine, cool, and appealing for just knocking around). Another warning: the "Heritage Green" color is not green -- it is a kind of mulberry purple stripe combined with either a very dark navy or black. So! If you have an hourglass shape, and don't want to wear the skirt very very low on the hips, this skirt is not for you, but as a short, cool sundress it is pleasant. An interesting idea that just didn't quite work, for me, anyway! It certainly won't keep me from continuing to turn to Patagonia for other things...

Not usable as a dress

I gave the 2 stars for it being from Patagonia and having such good quality cotton. But I tried a S and XS, and couldn't wear the skirt as a dress, as advertised. The waistband is too wide and the string doesn't tighten enough to hold up at the bust, even though I wear a D cup and always a S.
Returned.
Wouldn't recommend as a conversion piece, only as a skirt, if needed.
