Positive Reviews:

wonderful, lightweight and warm

Rating:*****
I purchased this jacket as my "warm layer" under my patagonia light smoke flash jacket. I wanted something that is not bulky but at the same time warm and allowing for freedom of movement. Patagonia did not let me down. It is very warm and comfortable. Having the underarm area constructed with a stretchy, non bulky fabric makes a lot of sense to me. Most of the fleece jackets I have seen tend to be very thick, making you feel somewhat "tied up" in the underarm area- particularly when you wear them under your winter jacket. This jacket is anything but that. On top of that, it has great ventilation which makes it easy to wear as your warmer layer on a colder day. The pockets and finishing touches are well thought out. I would recommend this jacket with no hesitation. The size chart seems about right to me. I am 5'2 and 120 lbs and I opted for a medium because I don't like things to be too tight- this worked perfectly me for me. I can wear a base layer under it and be very comfortable. Go for it, you wont be disappointed!

Awesome Jacket

Rating:*****
I love this jacket. I had one of the original style R4 jackets, which I loved also (although it was slightly an unflattering fit) since it was super fuzzy and warm. This jacket does not give the "fuzzy warm" feeling the traditional R4 jacket did, but I find this jacket to be extremely comfortable and is great for any sort of cold/cool weather activity. I was worried that this jacket would not be as warm as the standard R4, but that isn't the case at all. Especially if you are engaged in any sort of activity, this jacket traps all heat, and doesn't let in any wind at all. I would highly recommend this jacket to anyone who tends to be cold a lot and who spends a great deal of time outdoors. Patagonia's construction is unbeatable, and this jacket is an example of that. On top of all that, it's a great looking coat!!

Expensive Jacket Gift

Rating:*****
My husband purchased this jacket for me for Christmas. Since we share finances, I was shocked at the cost of the jacket and proceeded to make a lot of noise about it. He immediately offered to cancel the order or return the jacket. But once it got here, I quickly changed my mind! It is so slim and yet very warm. I was concerned it would be too small at first, but it has not been too tight even over layers of clothing. There have actually been several occasions where it was too warm! We have a cat and dogs, but it doesn't seem to attract the pet hair like my other fleece jackets have in the past. I love this jacket and my husband for buying it!

"This brightly colored jacket will keep you warm and not let you down!"

Rating:*****
This light weight women’s R4 jacket is surprisingly warm for how lightweight and wind proof it is. The color I got was safety green and let me tell you wearing this color you will not be missed. It took me a little while to get used to how bright it is but my husband thinks it is super cute. It is a very high performing well fitting jacket. It even takes into consideration the arm pits that Patagonia uses a thin R1 fabric that lets them breathe and arms can move around very well. I got this jacket and had to immediately put it on and stand out in the wind to try it out because of how thin and light weight it it.

Perfect fleece

Rating:*****
I love this jacket, it is perfect for everything. I bought it in black, and can wear it to work or even out on the town. It is so lightweight that its hard to believe how much warmth it provides, but am not overheated when its slightly warmer. I live in Massachusetts where I spend a lot of time outside, and work at a horse farm. The cut is so flattering; it is roomy enough to be comfortable over layers, but thin enough and cut well to not be bulky. I'm 5'9" with a small chest and the medium is perfect. I also like the small pile, so it looks a little bit less casual out at night. worth every penny.

Warm and mostly windproof

Rating:****
I bought this jacket as a windproof layer or on not-so-cold days for just about everything. The windproofing is amazing in most of the jacket, but some wind does come in through the bottom. Still, its not enough to make me not like the jacket and its effective enough that I am not afraid to wear it on really cold, windy days. It did fine on a 20 degree F day biking 35mph down a hill... The one gripe I have is the zipper when its all the way zipped up...it sticks into my neck/chin/whatever. Its recessed but annoying anyway. Why not put a little piece of fabric covering it, like a lot of jackets have?
Kathy at Patagonia on 03/12/2009

very cute and soft but not that warm!

Rating:****
This jacket is really cute, has a nice slim fit, and packs up small. I did not find it to be warm at all though--it was more of a "fall" jacket to me, or perhaps a good layer for running in winter. I run cold, so I was looking for something quite warm and this wasn't it. Also I'm tall and it wasn't as long as I'd have liked. It just barely made it to the top of my pants--not ideal. In the end I sent it back and went with the bulkier (but warmer and longer) regular R4.

Warm and windproof

Rating:*****
This jacket is fantastic! I wear it almost everyday. It's completely windproof. I'm still fascinated by how warm it keeps me, yet it's so thin! It's also very flattering. I get compliments on it literally everyday. I have the poppy fields color, and I love it. It's a very unique color, so it definitely stands out. I also wear it under a hard shell for the wet days. It fits perfectly with no bulk. I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a lightweight, go-anywhere fleece.

Comfy Layered or Alone

Rating:*****
I wore this jacket in the heart of a cold Canadian Winter during a trip to Banff and loved it. It keeps cold wind at bay which is surprising considering that it is nice and light, non-bulky. Unbeatable combination to pair this up with a waterproof shell. Also good as a stand alone jacket. The fleece doesn't pill and is very plush to the touch (without looking like you're walking around wearing a blanket). Love Patagonia!
S. Lim at Altrec on 10/13/2008

I love this jacket!

Rating:*****
Ive had this jacket for 3-4 years wearing it almost everyday, and washing it a lot. It is just now starting to wear out and so I will probably buy the same one again. It is very comfortable and warm and the black one looks great for all types of outings. My only complaint it that is sure attracts pet hair like a magnent and holds it in! I have to lint roll it constantly.

Negative Reviews:

A poor cut/design :(

Rating:*
I sent this jacket back after receiving it @ home and trying it on. I bought it b/c 1). it is windproof, & 2). it has a slim cut design (unlike the regular R4 :( Unfortunately, I thought the fit was horrible (maybe there is some reasoning behind the design??): It is significantly shorter in the front (versus the back), and it's also cut in some other way that makes the bottom front pooch out, which makes it very drafty from underneath/the bottom. For me, this defeated the purpose of the jacket being both windproof & warm :( Further, I thought the cut then just made the jacket look awkward. I hope they change the design for next year b/c I'd love to have this jacket!

Too short

Rating:**
I was so excited to get this fleece in the mail. After reading all these wonderful reviews I couldn't wait to get it on and get outside. However, after putting it on, it was way too short. There is a drawstring hem at the waste, which is good, but the jacket stopped above my waistline! I'm very disappointed... and with the money paid for this jacket, I'd hoped it would fit great. The arms were also a bit long too. I'm sending it back.
fotogirl at Patagonia on 10/30/2008

Hmmm...

Rating:**
I was pretty disappointed in this. I know it's windproof, but the fabric feels stiff and crunchy. The fabric also doesn't lay nicely where the seams are, and the arms are way long and wide. If I hadn't gotten an unbelievable price on this, I would return it. I am usually a Patagonia lover, but this didn't live up to my expectations.

Funny fit

Rating:*
I had a small first and the arms were too short (by a fair amount). Next I tried a medium. The arms were the right length, but the bottom of the jacket pooched out in a funny way. I feared that the jacket would let cold air in on my belly. It just had a funny fit.

Not exactly

Rating:***
The women's Lightweight R4 jacket didn't fit me well and didn't offer enough warmth or wind protection for my intended activity. The jacket bellowed between the shoulder blades in a small. My intention was to wear it on the golf course where it would not have been warm enough for 40 degree weather with some wind over a cashmere sweater (I walk the course.) The freedom of movement, however, was very good. I instead bought an Upside of Down jacket at the Georgetown store which fits beautifully, is warm enough, but alas doesn't have the freedom of movement of the Lightweight R4.
