The Men's Merino 4 Classic Zip-Neck by Patagonia is a super warm, 100% chlorine-free merino wool for stop-and-go activities in cold to very cold weather.
Patrollers at Alta know the true meaning of cold, and Merino 4 Ð Patagonia's warmest merino layer Ð is the answer. Naturally soft and beautiful, it's made with 7.8-oz 100% merino wool that has a dense jersey-knit face for thermal efficiency and resilience and a terry-loop back for next-to-skin comfort. Merino naturally resists odor, moves moisture away from the skin, regulates body temperature, and stretches.
Fine points include a high, double-layer zip collar that's clean-finished on the inside for next-to-skin comfort, set-in sleeves for a better fit within layering systems, and overlock seams for a clean aesthetic. Patagonia slow-washes their merino for next-to-skin softness. Machine-wash cold; lay flat to dry.

When you need to turn up the furnace in your winter weather wardrobe, add in Patagonia's Merino 4 Classic Zip Neck shirt, the warmest of Patagonia's Merino wool baselayers. Perfect beneath a waterproof, insulated shell for the worst weather, and a great addition to a windproof vest for more moderate days, Merino naturally inhibits odors, wicks sweat from your skin, and dries quickly while overlock seams reduce chafing.

Your girlfriend gives you a hug after an awesome day of skiing. You’d really love to hug her back, but you’ve already taken your ski jacket off and your synthetic baselayer smells like a twenty-year-old gym bag. If only you were wearing the Patagonia Merino 4 Classic Zip-Neck Top.

A one-of-a-kind baselayer.
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I will say at first the Wool 4 was not that impressive, but I did notice one thing right off the bat the terry- looped interior that’s vaguely reminiscent of a bath towel. I wasn’t sold on the garment at first because the options didn’t warrant the price tag. It doesn’t have a zippered Napoleon pocket (which the Capilene 4 has), the collar is stiff but not enough to be considered standup and it doesn’t have thumb loops (something all of the Wool series is seriously lacking). But after putting it on one time I knew that this would be my favorite base layer top. That’s why I own two and will purchase more this winter. The wool is extremely soft and comfortable, no itching what so ever. Normally with Wool garments I’ll get several itches before the first wash and after that nothing but with the Wool 4 there was no itch and I can say of all the Wool products I’ve tested this is of the softest. I guess you can attribute it to the use of non-chlorinated wool fabrics a first that I know of. I wore this as a base layer on a winter camping trip where it got down to below zero and I was toasty warm. One of the largest reasons why this shirt was on my list was the fact that it’s made in the US. Very few clothing manufactures make their clothing here in the states anymore. Everything is outsourced to China or Central and South America and it’s good to see that somebody still makes their gear here in the US. I can say as of today that I’ve worn the Wool 4 for several months’ time and many days in a row without and smell what so ever. It’s much better than Gladiodor which in my book doesn’t really seem to work at all and Wool does so naturally. Now enough of all the good things now on to why this only gets four stars. Like I stated above this garment is hellishly overpriced. I understand that it’s Merino Wool and the fact that it’s the heaviest weight in the series but that doesn’t make up for the fact of such little options. Ibex, Icebreakers Smartwool and Arc’ Teryx all offer their wool garments with Napoleon pockets and three of the four of those companies use thumb loops on their products. The fact that the Capilene 4 top comes with a Napoleon pocket (I own the shirt and love it by the way) really erks me. I will give Patagonia one thing one out of the three other companies listed above make their garments in the US. I’ll say one thing if the Wool 4 was updated with thumb loops, a zippered Napoleon pocket and a proper standup collar there will be no match for it. | |

Wool Rocks, especially this piece!

| I wear a lot of wool, as much as possible. I own several wool garments in various weights, including long sleeve, short sleeve, bike jerseys, long underwear, etc. Since receiving this Wool 4 top from Patagonia, I have basically lived in it. It is the best wool piece i have ever owned. I have worn it snowshoeing, alpine skiing, sledding with the kids, Christmas eve at the in-laws, Christmas morning, and even to church. I have commuted by bike to work in it, worn it at day, then rode home and made dinner in it. Heck, i wore it skiing today in single digit temps, came home and chopped wood, and now am writing a review in it! It breathes super well, has a great feel, and most importantly, stays warm even when wet. I rode a 2 hour bike ride through snow, ice and slush yesterday in it, and forgot to bring a change of clothes for the post ride chili feed. No problem. i just took off my wool base layer (super thin wool 2 from Patagonia) and put this wool 4 top back on. Sure it was a little damp, but it was still cozy. I love the standup collar, and the zip neck is a nice feature. I get comments ALL the time on how cool it looks from both guys and gals. I am afraid I'm loving it to death! The temperature range seems to be a lot wider than what Patagonia recommends which is an added bonus. Buy it!! You will not regret it! | |

| I pretty much live in my Patagonia merino base layers. The quality of this shirt is great. The feel is soft and comfortable. I wear it for any activity during the day, and I even sleep in it at night! One of the most amazing things about this baselayer is its ability to resist odor. I have to toss my synthetic baselayers in the laundry after one use, because the smell is too strong for me. But I can wear this shirt for days without noticing any odor at all. Wearing this shirt has drastically reduced the amount of laundry I have to do, which is great economically and ecologically. The wool 4 zip is stylish enough to be worn on its own, and it is slim enough to layer under sweaters and jackets. I highly recommend it. | |

| Superior to synthetic base layers in every way but durability. There are tradeoffs in every choice you make. Choose the wool base layer and you get superior comfort and warmth minus the clammy feel and stench of polypro. Choose the synthetic and you get unsurpassed durability. Poly garments remain serviceable for a decade but become perpetually stinky with time and extended wear. I prefer the wool but long for more wear and abrasion resistance. Would it be heresy to offer a 90/10 wool synthetic blend? | |

| I have owned several generations of this sweater and it is by far my favorite base layer... cool in the summer, warm in the winter, lightweight and fits in almost aything I carry. High performance when you need it, great for chilling out and classy enough to wear at the office. Very high quality and holds up with consistent wear. I recommend it everywhere I go. | |

| Not only is this the warmest thing i have ever warn for its weight but it is extremely comfortable and absorbs sweat like a cotton t-shirt. Great purchase just wish it wasn't so pricey, nevertheless i will be purchasing more as soon as possible. | |

| Great for a hike in the cold weather as a stand alone or with a synchilla jacket. Extremely comfortable, great mobility with it in multiple settings. It looks great even with corduroy pants in the office or when going out to a nice restaurant. | |

| Love it, practically lived it for a 10 day trip to the Sierra's. The only thing that I feel needs improvement/option and this goes for all of patagonia's products, is options for people with shorter arm/leg lengths. Other than that great stuff. EL | |

| this is one of the best pull over I have ever owned. It is soft for a wool base. I also notice that it doesn't get near the odor of other insulative garments | |

| This is a great base layer when it's all you are going to bring. I've used this multiple times backpacking w/ it and my stretch element. Didn't need another layer it's that warm. | |
