Patagonia Boucau Halter Top Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Great swimsuit!

I read a number of poor reviews of this top, and am glad I do not agree. One point of disagreement probably has to do with the fact that I hate pads in my swimwear and immediately pull them out (they're removable), so I have no experience with any bunching problems. The top stays on perfectly, is very comfortable and the knot ties do not dig into my back or neck. I leave mine tied in the same position and am easily able to remove the top without untying either, so I haven't had issues with the straps being too short to tie, as others have. I love this swim top, don't recall it being much different from previous versions, and am THRILLED that Patagonia is finally making stuff for the smallest of ladies again!!! The XS is perfect for me, as is the XXS bottoms. Thanks for another great product, Patagonia. :)

Wore the top and bottoms while running around the yard while doing chores before splashing around at the beach. Awesome support (I am a size 36B) and great fit. The fabric is soft and the straps in the back are just the right length without trailing too far down your back! :) Can't wait to go waterskiing later this weekend! The suit also fits well around the bust without being too revealing. The color is true to the color shown online (I got a teal model with yellow and brown strips). Got the matching solid teal bottoms that fit well and covered ALL of the junk in the trunk! YES! No more picking out wedgies! Fabric also stays on the bod well without a lot of shifting.

I bought two.

Finding a bathing suit that functions and flatters is a perennial concern, but my worries are over with this top. This style is perfect for my body type: small-breasted women rejoice; this halter gives you shape without excessive padding or uncomfortable structure. Only two minor faults for this top: (1) tying the straps in just a simple bow doesn't keep it from slipping, but a square knot is very difficult to untie behind your back when wet. It is strong and flexible enough to just pull off overhead, however. (2) The thin pad inside the cup can also a little squirrely. However, unless you're getting pounded by waves, it will work well and look great from board to beach.

love it!

I have been devoted to the Makeba top for a few years but with the Boucau I now have another favorite. I got the blue swirl pattern with the brown band, and it looks great with solid brown bottoms. The soft ties are a nice touch and make the top both easier to tie and more secure, as well as more comfortable under a PFD. I actually appreciate the way the pads are removable/adjustable and would not want them to be sewn down. I also like that Water Girl tops now have an opening in the lining for sand to escape (I used to have to cut little holes to get it out)

Works for a D cup

As a 34D it's difficult to find bikini tops that feel supportive and comfortable, but I love this top so much I've bought it three times. The thick torso band doesn't stretch too much or slide down and I can move around without worrying about falling out. I probably wouldn't want to run or play volleyball in it, but it's fine for walking, swimming, lounging. I'm 5'9" 135 lbs and the large fits perfect. With one of these tops I had problems with the pads sliding around, but it's an easy fix with a needle and thread to keep them in place.

I spent years looking for thin swimsuit material that dries up quickly. And I found it. In addition this top looks great. I need support and there are removable support cups that are so thin and they look natural. The top makes you feel very free (unlike some confined tops that are suit of armor type) but covers well, and provides support. And both neck and chest ends tie, so order based on the breast size, not the perimeter as that can be adjusted.
Zoe - customer at Zappos.com on 08/06/2012
Great bikini top. Thick ties keep everything secure. The triangles provide good moderate coverage. The tie in the back can be a little uncomfortable when sitting against a back rest but no more than any other tie top.. and I like them best regardless. The lining is nice, providing good shape and thickness. I'd surf in it or even play volleyball but I am on the flatter side. My small fits perfectly and I'm 5'7" 130lbs.
oceangirl at Patagonia on 03/18/2011

easy, sporty, and most import. it stays on!

It stays on!!! YAY!! I have had trouble with bathing suit tops staying on, especially when body surfing. This stays put and I am not accidentally flashing anyone. The only reason why it doesn't get a five stars is because the straps that tie around your back can actually hurt when they are tied in a knot. It can be an uncomfortable car ride and bicycle ride if your are wearing a pack.

Bought this top because I wanted something a bit more sturdy than the Kupala top (and to match a different colored bottom half). Even for small ladies, this top does the job. Stays in place while playing frisbee, sandy mock surf wrestling, running around, and generally frolicking. Patagonia's fabric is high quality and I can tell that the elastic won't wear out by the end of the season.

Flattering and Functional

Recently bought this suit (with the Sunamee bottom) and could not be more pleased. The lining gives it a very flattering fit while the band provides a good amount of support. I've swum laps in this several times and had no problems with it staying put.
I'm a 32B and feel like this did enhance my chest a bit (I'm not complaining!) so something to consider for larger busted women.

Negative Reviews:

Not as great as I'd expected

I am usually a 5 star girl on all things Pata so this is unusual for me. This is a style which in general works great on my small-ish frame: halter neck, lightly padded, triangle cups....but this one just doesn't work well. It gaps weirdly around the inner part of the triangle. I am small chested (34B) and can generally just snug up the ties to make things fit well, but this is a design issue that isn't helped this way. It's also a very full coverage top, almost too much material even though I ordered the XS. I think too that it would be much better if the top had a closure in the back to avoid the uncomfortable knot-in-the-back thing. All of the flaws could be forgiven on a cheap suit, but not one in this price range. Also the gapping problem would only be exacerbated in the surf, as would the ultra/overly lightweight cups which seem to be shifty and not to fit the suit that well. I did try two different colors in the XS. The hickory is nice, sort of greenish-brown. The palm frond is good also. I live in my Patagonia clothing...both in my home in the mountains and on my travels to the seas, so I was disappointed but I will certainly try another style.

Fabric breaks down quickly

When I got this suit, (I have the halter top and the adour bottoms) I LOVED it! It fit me perfectly and stayed in place. The only problems at first was the fact that the pads in the cups constantly folded up.
However, after wearing the suit only a handful of times, it is completely falling apart. First it faded, then the fabric started breaking down. On the halter top, the fabric is now stretched and going white just above the cups on the strap. The bottoms are almost completely see-through, and you can see little lines where it has begun to fall apart. I have had this happen on cheap bathing suits before, but never this quickly. I can no longer wear it because it has become so transparent.
sk8ybike at Patagonia on 04/09/2012

bunchy padding and awkward tie

It made me sad when this halter didn't work, because in the past I've had two excellent halter bikinis from Patagonia. The padding was just awful looking, and I can imagine it would only get worse with use in water. Also, the front darts are unflattering and I would prefer a flat front like Patagonia used to make. Lastly, please bring back the back clasp, rather than the tie! It's much more comfortable and secure to have a clasp in back. The only thing that inspired me to give it any stars (and I did return it) is the quality of fabric/colors.

Cute top, but not function

I have bought a few versions of this top, always hoping the next one would work better. However, after scrolling through all the reviews - I notice a lot of people have the same problem. The pads all move around!! Numerous times, I take a dive off the board, duck under a wave or simply go for a swim and the pads get all twisted around so I come up looking like my bathing suit top just came out of the washing machine. I hope Patagonia fixes this problem soon because the bathing suits should be function and cute!!
togenyc at Patagonia on 03/22/2010

bad fit

I loved the style of this and the color I ordered from 09 spring/summer line but I sent it back. I had it for months and I never wore it because I could not figure out how to wear it and not expose myself. I am 34C. I ordered the large at first, sent it back for the medium and it still just did not work for me.
lolo26 at Patagonia on 01/27/2010

Disappointing

I bought this top to use at the beach. It was a total disappointment. Every time I went underwater or was caught by a wave, the pads in the bra got all twisted around and deformed. Even though the top stayed on, the pads were so disheveled that it looked ridiculous and was uncomfortable. It was very embarrassing.

Not for D-cup Ladies

I really wanted this top to work. I'm a 34D. I tried an XL. The cups are too small to accommodate D-cup ladies. With some re-design, it could work great. Lovely color options though. . .and the bottom fit nicely. I would recommend this product to friends who are smaller on top.

Neutral Reviews:

Top not as good as the bottoms

Halter top has decent fit, but with limitations. i might have returned it had I not like the matching bottoms so much.
The straps around the back are way too short. It is difficult to tie if you are not flexible. The coverage is a bit minimal and the padding a little skimpy. I bought the similar style 2 years ago and was very pleased with the fit. I wish it would fit the same way and hope it is changed in future product. Fabric is still great.
cmar at Patagonia on 03/16/2010

padding not great

Bought two of these tops in different colors. They fit well but the thin padding inside the bra tends to hold creases (not very natural looking) and doesn't stay in place when delicate-washed. Other mfrs use better, more natural-acting padding. I hope Patagonia changes to something better and less-creasing next year.
JHay at Patagonia on 08/27/2012

So-So Top

Being on the smaller side, I was hoping for a little extra support. I wouldn't feel confident doing a lot of swimming and diving in this top.

Not quite for me

Really cute print, but didn't fit me very well. Looks great on my friend, however! Sadly, it was returned.
