QUALITY SHIRT!

I love these shirts (you can tell if you catch a glimpse of my closet). They are warm, soft, and extremely comfortable. If it's breezy outside, or the AC is on a bit high, I toss one of these puppies on, and I'm nice and toasty. The colors this season are quite fantastic, so far I have "McAdams: Raven" & "Carew: Blue Butterfly", and am drooling over "Carew: Narwhal Grey".
The only con is the shrinking with these shirts. They tend to shrink up a lot in length (both body & sleeves) but stay wide in the body. I buy them to fit, and don't dry them. That is KEY. DO NOT dry them if they fit perfectly, if you want to toss them in the dryer, by a size up. The feel of the fabric also changes after drying since this is a longer cotton fiber, there is a big difference in texture before & after drying.
I definitely recommend picking some of these up before they sell out!

A good shirt, but ...

I own one of these shirts from about 19 years ago, and I just bought a new one last year. It's not the same fabric as the old shirt. The new one is not as smooth and doesn't drape as nice. Also the new one is already starting to pill, the old one never has. I realize that the new shirts are probably much more environmentally friendly, and I applaud Patagonia for their commitment to the environment (its one of the reasons I buy from them)...but the old shirt is just better. There I said it. Also, if you plan to throw it in the dryer, the sleeve length may shrink up on you, so plan ahead. That being said, I like the styling of these shirts: the collar is understated, and the length is just right to wear untucked (I'm 5'9" and bought the small). The fabric weight is still perfect: Like a very light weight flannel.

Excellent shirt, sizes not so.

I own two and just ordered one more. I am a 5'6" tall and 145 lbs guy who has a hard time finding proper fitting shirts. I ended ordering the XS size and the fit is perfect for my body. I wear size 30" pants and I have an athletic build. Normally, size small shirts are too long on the sleeves and shirt length falls bellow mid zipper. Slim fits and sometimes regular fits tend to be too tight on my upper body. Given that this shirt is a relaxed fit I was able to go down a size to XS and voila, enough room, the shirt length and sleeves are perfect. Very happy. The quality is excellent and the material is soft but strong. I wish they had more colors available. I would add about an extra inch to the shoulders and it would be 6 stars out of 5.

great...but

I have owned these shirts for over a decade it seems, and I love them, but for some reason they never did fit right. I'm 5'10, 190lbs, and I need an extra medium. The large is too long and the medium is a bit too tight in the chest. They have always been this way. The quality is great, the colors are great too, but I can't buy them anymore. This happens with a lot of Patagonia's shirts too. I'm only a 43 chest, but for some reason it feels like they make their shirts only for skinny guys with no chests. I mean, we are not all skinny climbers. Well, that's my rant. And I know it's just Patagonia too because I have other shirts from many other companies and their large and medium shirts feel more true to size.

Trusty, reliable, long lasting

I have owned one or more of the cotton pima shirts since their introduction. No other shirt offers such flexibility: except for tie and jacket occasions, I wear them freely at 'regular' work, Sat nite dinner and movies, around the house - all times. The shirts are particularly suitable and comfortable during the swing seasons of New England, fall and spring. Need more warmth? Add a vest. I have noticed I can no longer wear size medium but must order small. This is a change in shirt sizing since my height and arm length have not decreased that much with old age.
oldfarmer at Patagonia on 10/03/2008

Perfect All Around Shirt

This shirt is the perfect marriage of comfort, durablity, and function. You can wear this shirt to practically any occasion. Undue one button and leave the sleeves rolled down and it is perfect for work. Take a couple buttons down and roll the sleeves up and it is perfect for an afternoon walk or throwing the football in the yard. If you get a little cold throw on one of the Classic Retro-X Vests and you are good to go. I usually wear t-shirts in a large, but i wear a Medium in the Pima Cotton Shirt.

Consistent Fit/Quality

I have 5 of these now. The newest is a nice neutral plaid and has the same comfortable fit. Looks good untucked over a T or tucked in. This one seems to have a nice, somewhat tighter weave but is still soft and high quality. It's from China; a few of the others were sourced from Morocco but it doesn't matter. Same top-tier quality. All in M are a perfect fit for me with a 33' sleeve, and average height. I opted for color 837 which looks great with khakis or jeans//
Toad at Patagonia on 09/17/2012

soft, comfortable shirt

I own two of these shirts an both are extremely comfortable. The cotton feels very soft against your skin. My only complaints relate to care. I usually dry my laundry on the line and this shirt is always terribly wrinkled, to the point where I need to iron it after each washing if I plan on being seen in public. I ran my first shirt through the dryer once to combat the wrinkling, but it came out considerably smaller, so I now put up with the ironing. Otherwise a solid garment.
dvkt at Patagonia on 10/29/2008

An always welcome favorite

I've owned these since they were first introduced and still have one from the mid 90s. Soft, durable, flannel w/o being "flannel", although I wish they went back to patterns that looked more like regular sport shirts. Perfect all around layer for a warm climate that occasionally gets real winter--more comfortable than a regular sport shirt, but not as heavy as flannel. The new bigger "relaxed" sizing makes it easier to wear over other layers, but may not be the best fit by itself for some people.
DCer at Patagonia on 09/12/2010

May be it's just me

I have been buying Patagonia clothes for over 20 years. I must be an anomaly; the medium of this shirt is too tight in the chest but fits every where else, and the large is too long and baggy. It doesn't just happen with this shirt but also with the Fjord Flannel and the Buckshot shirts, as well as the polos. This is not enough to keep me from buying their products though, just a common issue with Patagonia. If only they made an "Extra Medium."

Negative Reviews:

Bad Sizing Chart

The sizing is way off I ordered a large, which in the past was my normal size with Patagonia. On this order I found that i am no longer a large size for clothing from Patagonia, and so I reordered and now the Medium is still very large on me. Let me note that I have not changed in size. So for me this was a 2 size change, which doesn’t seem like a reasonable expectation for customers. “Relax Fit” must be code for size down, I wish I had the decoder ring. I would not buy this product through the mail only in the store. A 75 dollar shirt should met some sort of standardize sizing. I put 1 star because a shirt has to fit to be good.
baygrass at Patagonia on 11/01/2010

Very large shirt

I have several of these shirts from the past few years but this year the shirt is huge! I could fit 2 of myself in this shirt. I am 6'2 190 lbs so about an average weight/height guy and the large engulfed me. The medium was too short. I don't know why the shirt has to be so big. Most of the people who buy Patagonia are relatively fit. We don't need this much fabric. Please Patagonia, go back to the old fit, please...
sanddogmd at Patagonia on 07/01/2010

cotton woes

I own 2 of these shirts from prior years. After I washed them, they had the feel and appearance of light-weight traditional flannel. Not this year's model. The material is flimsy and thin and never developed the softness of my older pima shirts. Your customers expect more from you despite world cotton shortages. Charge more or explain why the decline in quality. Plus, the fit is huge (other items with odd fit this year, as well). Can't recommend at the price.

Medium size turned out to be far larger than most

The medium sized shirt turned our to be far larger than any medium I have ever worn. The blue color turned out to be very purple. No problem returning shirt to Atlanta Store.
tc64 at Patagonia on 11/04/2010

Neutral Reviews:

Adequate

I agree, the fit is huge. This year, I had return a few mediums for smalls. One of the four smalls is rather small and the other are kinda medium (after a wash, the smallest of the small was unwearable :( I have been wearing patagonia long sleeve shirts for many years and like the other reviewer in this column suggested, things have changed a bit. I like the colors, I like the style but I am not sure about the consistency/quality or continuity this 2010/2011 season. Despite my complaints, I will order what I can get. I am dissapointed a little ;) and will continue my search for the perfect long sleeve casual shirt.
Anonymous at Patagonia on 01/15/2011

Watch Out With Sizing

Last year this shirt was perfect. I'm not sure why they decided to change it, but they did. If you ordered this shirt last year the fit was "Regular". This year the shirt is "Relaxed". I'm 6'-1" 205 and the Large is gigantic on me. I actually had to give them to my brother who is 6'-0" 250 and they fit him great. If you like your shirts big, then just order your normal size. But if you like your shirts fitting like a typical shirt, I would be very careful.
alternate1985 at Patagonia on 09/18/2010

Perfect, Except for Fit

Incredibly comfortable, excellent colors, but too much fabric for a well-fitting shirt. I really like how most of Patagonia's gear has an athletic, almost tailored cut (perfect for me normally at 6'1" and 175 lb), but there is just too much fabric in this "relaxed" fit shirt. I REALLY wanted to like it, but will have to return it and wait until they go to a more tailored fit that, from other reviewers, Patagonia use to have. So - EXCELLENT quality, just not a good fit for my build.
Ryano at Patagonia on 09/22/2010

This shirt is super comfortable, soft and seemingly beat-proof so it's your typical Patagonia quality, however, the fit is a bit loose. I'm a skinny guy at 6' 155 lbs and I bought a M. The shoulders fit well but the mid-section is so baggy that I haven't really felt comfortable enough to wear it out as a more formal shirt. Great shirt for fishing, beating around but wish the mid-section were more trim

Cameron Yates at Backcountry.com on 09/30/2013

funny sizing

As most reviews state, this shirt is super soft and super comfy. However, the sizing is completely off, and that is the reason that I only rated it at 3 stars. I am 5'11", 170, athletic, and the medium was huge. I have never worn anything other than a medium from Patagonia and was disappointed with the funny fit of the pima cotton shirt. Exchanged it for the Good Shirt instead.
MosquitoGeek at Patagonia on 08/23/2010

Nice Feel, Wrinkles Easily

This is a soft shirt, which has a very comfortable feel to it. However, it is extremely wrinkle-prone. When it comes out of the drier, it always needs to be ironed, whereas other shirts can be shaken out, if I get them out right away. The collar also does not hold its shape very well. I recently returned mine, because the sleeves shrunk.
FleeceWitherspoon at Patagonia on 10/09/2009

So-So

I have bought other shirts from Patagonia and been very happy, but the Pima cotton just doesn't fit right. It seems to be oversized compared to the other shirts I have bought in the past. The fit is baggier and longer than I expected, my Large feels like an XL, but the sleeves seem to be a good fit so I won't downsize.
NumeroUno at Patagonia on 01/16/2009

comfy but big

I like this shirt, super soft material...feels halfway between a common cotton shirt and flannel. It did seem a bit larger than I hoped. I washed it hot water and tried to shrink a bit, so now it fit better.
troyer at Patagonia on 10/29/2008

I wear this shirt often around the home, office, on the town.
Material feels great. Pretty big compared to the larges I'm used to.
