Positive Reviews:

This is a great layer!!! I will agree with the above review that it is a very snug fit. I am 5?3? 125 lbs and the Medium is perfect. I recently went on a camping trip and brought this as my warmest layer. It rained the entire time but it kept me warm and I stayed dry with my rain jacket over it. I read other reviews on other websites and there were a few that said the hood was too tight around the neck. This is one of my favorite features. It has a snug fit and covers up to your nose. I am a ski patroller and this will be one of my favorite layers in the winter for skiing. It will keep the cold winter air and wind out of my ears. Other great features are the thumb holes and the length of the jacket is great. I love that it isn?t short and does not allow air to travel up the bottom. Very warm, very practical, multi-use layer. I bought 2 more!

I love Patagonia's R1 material. It's the perfect layer for the fall and spring and great for chilly mountain mornings. But, when they call this cut "slim fit," they really mean it. I usually wear a medium in Patagonia (including a "slim fit" softshell jacket that I adore) but there's no way my shoulders and lats (39 inches) were fitting into this medium. I tried a large on in a store and that was way too big, so I guess I'm out of luck. I have a more square-cut men's one already, which is why I can attest to the awesomeness of the fabric, but I wish I could get one fitted to me!

Fabulous but strange fit

Loved this top- loved the color. Usually Patagonia does things perfectly, but they missed the boat a little bit on the fit of this one. There are many gathers under the armpits, so if you are small busted this won't fit at all- looks very strange. If you are a C or D cup, should look fabulous- it's just not for us smaller-busted women. So sad- I had to return it.

This is my go-to top for skiing! I love it! While the cut of the R1 may be a bit slimmer than in past years, it's not nearly as slim as a base layers. The new R1 has plenty of room to fit a mid-weight or the new lighter weight expedition weight tops under it. Keeps me warm all day and fits well. Thanks Patagonia!

My Favorite Pullover

The R1 pullover is a go-to piece. From climbing to casual wear this piece never lets me down. It breathes incredibly and allows for exceptional movement. The fit is acceptable for smaller chested women with long arms. It is a little baggie under the arms which allows for uninhibitaed movement. Everyone needs an R1 in their wardrobe because it is incredibly versital!
Copper Penny at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 04/04/2011

Awesome as usual.

Another well-built and reliable Patagonia product. The raglan sleeves won't bunch up under pack straps, and I love the that the trim is turned over the zipper on the collar. That way the zipper doesn't scratch my chin when the shirt is zipped all of the way up. The fit feels true, and the sleeves/body are long enough to prevent ride-up.

Awesome Layer

I love Patagonia's R1! It is the perfect mid insulating layer. It fits perfectly over long underwear but is still slim enough to put a down layer on top of. The fabric is think and holds its shape well. I also wear it out casually quite a bit. I love technical pieces that can also be worn everyday :)
ColoradoGirl123 at Patagonia on 03/10/2013

soft and fitting

I love this jacket and the warmth it provides. This could be used as a great baselayer for hiking, skiing, and anything that requires extra heat. I find that I can wear this a few times without it smelling like tech wear. The colors look nice and I like the fleece lining compared to its outside shell.

Love the R1!

Of all my Patagonia gear, this is my favorite item. It's warm but not suffocating, perfect fit, and I wear it daily. I haven't put it to test in truly frigid weather, but during my travels, it did a more than adequate job of keeping me warm in mild to chilly temps. Very durable!
Kati at Patagonia on 08/28/2012

great summer jacket, great winter layer.

I own two of these. It's pretty much the most versatile thing I wear, and everybody thinks I am really badass because I look so cool and outdoorsy when I wear it. It's perfect for chilly summer mornings and evenings, and a great layer under a hoody or jacket in the fall and winter.

Negative Reviews:

Disappointed

I bought an R1 pullover in 2006 and it was my favorite piece of clothing. It held up well and I would be wearing it today, except my washing machine ate it. I ordered a new one (same size) from Patagonia this year and it seems like their sizing has changed. The small I received was much more bulky and less form fitting than the original. I am 5'8" and 130lbs, small curves. I even laid them out and you can see the 2006 R1 is much smaller than the 2012 R1. The newer fabric also felt cheaper and the sewing is slightly different than the old style. Patagonia, why change a good thing??
NWclimbergirl at Patagonia on 02/15/2013

Disappointed In Fit Again

I have three R1 pullovers that I purchased in 2005,2006 and 2008. I love them and the fit is perfect. (I wear an XS) However, when I ordered one last year and this year they both bunched in the back at the bottom of the neck and along the shoulders. Since my others don't it is clearly in the styling and/or making of the garment. I returned them both years. If you get one of these make sure to check this out. Patagonia, please figure this glitch out or consider returning to what was a perfect fit.
skiboomer at Patagonia on 11/28/2012
Unlike Patagonia R1 Pullovers from previous years the current top is cut with a very slim fit, especially in the bust.
