Positive Reviews:

Super warm and super breathable

This is the single best technical fleece I've ever owned. The R2 fleece is incredibly warm, but incredibly breathable; because it's so breathable, wind comes right through it, so this is really best as a mid-layer as opposed to outerwear.

This jacket has an athletic fit, and the trim profile makes it very comfortable to layer beneath a shell jacket. Its high-loft fleece is stretchy and comfortable. This jacket also has Polartec Power Stretch panels on the sides for additional breathability and range of motion, and the full zippers makes it easy to vent if the sun decides to peek out.

On a recent January backpacking trip in the Smoky Mountains, I was surprised by a significant winter storm, with temperatures hovering around freezing and several inches of snow falling overnight and throughout my hike. Along the trail, especially in the lower gaps between mountains, it was snowing sideways, with 40mph wind gusts.

At camp in a shelter along the Appalachian Trail, I was toasty and warm in a Patagonia Capilene 3 crew, Patagonia R2 jacket and Marmot Zeus down vest. Back out on the trail, all I had to do was replace the down vest with my Gore-Tex shell, and the same combination of Cap 3 & R2 kept me warm and dry, while breathing so well that I never felt wet or clammy as I slogged through the snow.

It's also worth mentioning how green Patagonia is with most of their products; as of 2011, Patagonia has bumped the recycled content of this piece up to 60%.

If I lost this somehow, I'd buy another immediately. Nothing else in my closet comes close.

Ahhmazing!

This is an amazing jacket. When you first pick it up, you will be surprised how light it is and doubt that it will do much, as in work as an insulator. But then, you put it on, and it is as if it is a heated garment. Oh my! I had given my wife a fuzzy hoody made out of similar feeling material and wondered why Patagonia did not make anything so sensuous feeling for men, then this! It not only feels great but it works really well. It is almost too efficient to wear around the house as a sweater and almost too efficient to wear under a soft shell out on a morning bike ride with freezing temperatures. The other wonderful part is the fit! I am 172 lbs. and 6'2" and most Patagonia jackets have been too short in the arms and too short in the torso, as well as too much material in the body. Well, this slim fit got it right, sleeves long enough, torso tight enough and long enough in a Large. I have ordered a second one, because they will probably stop making it, or sell out. As a disclaimer, I have never seen or touched the previous R2 jacket that this one replaces, but this new one makes me glad I waited. Finally, Patagonia recognizes that there are tall people in the market. I had a thermal pro high loft in a large tall from another company, and it was great except the cut was for someone with an eighteen inch neck and a bottom heavy torso. Thanks Patagonia!

Superb

unlike any of the other reviewers i aw below i do not wear this for hiking or highly aerobic pursuits on a daily basis, in fact i'm lucky if i wear this hiking more than 2-3 times a year. I do however wear this particular piece 4-5 times a week once fall rolls around our nations capital. Most of the time i am wearing at least a sport coat if not a suit, thus wearing a slim fitting fleece may not seem to most to be a viable option. i have however found this to be invaluable once it gets cold. i am able to wear it under a wool pea coat or trench as determined by the weather and maintain a level of warmth that most surpasses any dress coat i have found. winter mornings bearable and i have yet to make it to the office and find myself sweating in my suit, a remarkable achievement if you ask me. I had to get one a little larger than i would wear with just a t-shirt underneath but it was absolutely worth it. This fleece performs admirably and suffice it to say i would recommend it to anyone looking to stay warm when the thermometer plummets.

Best piece of gear I've owned!!

I'm 6-1, 185, and I've learned that for tops, the patagonia large fits me perfectly. Other brands I take an xlarge. I started wearing synthetic clothing under a drysuit while kayaking in the 80's, and since then have pretty much tried every brand out there. There's some good stuff by other companies, but patagonia is hand's down, THE BEST in comfort, performance and value in the long run. I just returned my first pair of patagonia capilene that was 20+ years old to be recycled, and I wore them daily at times for years. Having said all that, the regulator series and particularly the R2 is the best piece of gear I've owned. A couple of the less than 5 star reviewers apparently don't get the purpose of this line. It regulates body heat perfectly, almost like a second skin. You can go from 75 degrees to 20 and be comfortable just by adding a shell, like the houdini, whether running, biking, climbing etc. And feel comfortable doing it.
I ran the other night with a wicking T underneath, and just the R2, at night, in the low 30's and it was perfect, prompting me to right this review. Buy one , you won't regret it!

Mens R2 Fleece top

Bought a size medium even though I wear a size large beause I did not what the extra material sagging in the mid section. Because the jacket stretches this worked just fine. When I wore the jacket initally in the car with the shoulder restraint it shed all over me and the car, so make sure you wash it before wearing it. Nice piece of gear. light , compresses well, good warmth to weight ratio. Did some back packing in the Uncompaghre Wilderness in CO. and noticed the jacket did not compress as well or have the warmth to weight ratio of my Patagonia Down Sweater jacket so did not take it along so save volumn in my pack. Wore it fishing and around town in Lake City, Durango, Silverton and over the Cinnamon and Engineer Passess in Colorado at 12,500 ft MSL had to back it up by putting the Patagonia Down Sweater over the top of it. Wore it while exploring the Canyon parks of Utah (car exploring), jacket performed well. Good piece of gear, good bang for the buck.

Very versatile piece

These jackets have already seen LOTS of use (I own two of them). This fleece is cut to be more of a form-fitting piece, so that it can be layered easily under a shell, or on its own as a great-fitting fleece. It works really well when worn over numerous base layers (I have used an IceBreakers 260, and Patagonia Caps 2 and 3). "Slim fit" does NOT mean that it is skin tight... however - for those who think that a t-shirt or any other casual garment (i.e. polo shirt) will fit under it, it likely will not - try something cut more roomy, as the R2 will bunch up sleeves on those garments as it has somewhat narrower sleeves to accomodate layering under something. Bottom line: VERY versatile piece that will serve well as an outer-layer when in high 30's to 50's (deg. F) and no rain and as a layer when it is cold and wet. For sizing purposes, I am 6'0" and 165 with a relatively skinny torso and a medium is the ticket for me.
bluetrout22 at Patagonia on 11/14/2011

Great lightweight fleece

I picked up the R2 to replace an aging Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man (also a GREAT fleece), mainly due to the slightly lighter weight (maybe just mental) and less bulky feel. This jacket has already served well as a light layer under a rain shell or stand alone to knock off the chill. It is NOT windproof, or even wind resistant, so if you want that, check out the R4. Otherwise, this has to be one of the best lightweight full-zip fleeces around.

It layers well, is super soft and comfortable, the colors are always great and it's easy to match other layering pieces in the (R)egulator series with Capilene 2, etc...

Overall, this is a great choice for everything from cruising the sidewalks of your hometown to nailing the final move of your latest boulder project. The ONLY downside is the material around the zippers; It's a bit stiff at first, but in a way, it makes zipping easier since the fabric can't move as much. If you need a solid, mid-weight fleece, this is it.
Lucas at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 10/10/2008

r2

I find myself reaching for this fleece everyday because it is so versatile. Its warmth to weight ratio is awesome. (much better than my army 300 wt fleece) and it layers really well being that its lightweight. I've worn it with a Capilene 3 baselayer, synthetic insulated sweater, and a hardshell down to -20 and I've worn it inside at room temp and have been fine because it is so breathable. It is definitely not windproof but i think thats awesome for an insulating layer. When I'm really working up a sweat I just unzip my shell and the wind cuts right through it cooling me down so i don't have to take off layers. I got the Gecko Green and at first I didn't like it but it's really grown on me. When wearing it as an outerlayer I feel like i'm visible for miles. If I could improve two things on the r2 though, I would make the sleeve cuffs smaller and add drawcords to the waist to seal in the heat.

A Versatile Classic

I own the R4, R2 vests, and just picked up a R2 Jacket to use as a midweight insulation layer or a stand-alone on a cool evening. It is a very versatile piece and works great for these uses. It packs down nicely and looks very stylish for wearing out on the town. Note that this is NOT windproof, so bring a hard or softshell in those conditions. For hiking in cool conditions when you just need some warmth, this is perfect. Unlike the R4, which is VERY warm and windproof, this is much more usable. The R4 is only for the coldest temps when used as an insulator. The R2 can be used in temps from 25F up to 50F depending on how active you are and if you are a "hot" or "cold" person. The R4 would be for below 25F. It is soft, colorful, has plenty of pockets, and looks good. This is a classic coat that should be in any serious outdoor enthusiast's closet.
thetrailboss at Patagonia on 05/11/2012

Go to insulation

Being an outdoor backcountry traveler for over 50 years, I have become aware how important one's primary insulation layer is. The R2 jacket has become that for me. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I am a hiker, skier, biker, boater, climber, and my work is primarily outdoors. I need a later that breathes well yet can provide excellent warmth to below freezing temperatures. I use the R2 full zip jacket combined with a wind or rain shell as my system. Uncovered the jacket breathes exceptionally well. Covered, one is toasty and warm even if damp. Plus the open nature of the fleece fabric allows moisture to push from the inside, out. These days there are many choices for insulation/shell layers. I use a number of them depending on the nature of my outing. That said, the R2 jacket and a shell is the primary combo I reach for when the day is cool/wet, and I have a workout ahead. I hope this is of some help.

Negative Reviews:

Had Issues?

When I received this jacket I was very happy about the weight and breathability as well as how soft it is. However for some odd reason within a week or so after getting it. It started to fall apart completely. All of a sudden all these holes started forming all over the jacket. I took it back to the patagonia store in Austin TX and after 2 separate trips there I finely found a parking space. Luckily they had my size and I could exchange it. However I did have to choose a different color. The new one seems to be ok so far. I have only had it a week now. Its a bummer though because it went on sale like the day afterwards and of course they wouldn't give me the sale price. Which seemed lame to me. Since I do own an absurd amount of patagonia products.

Doesn't fit the same

Bought this to replace my old R2, which my son is enjoying while trekking in South America. The new jacket looks the same but bunches up at the armpits and is uncomfortable to wear. Not sure what what I'll be doing for a fleece layer as the next size up will be too big in the body.
Blue6 at Patagonia on 02/26/2012

Slim Fit?

The R2 jacket was a dissapointment. I purchased the jacket because it was a slim fit design and intended on wearing it underneath a shell. the jacket was actually baggy and it was too long (I am 6'2"). I am a huge Patagonia fan but this item is a miss.
williev at Patagonia on 10/29/2012

Neutral Reviews:

Yes, but

It is superbly soft and comfortable. The fit is actually quite close to a slim fit. However, these different fabric "pads" is what I don't quite understand. They let the cold wind pass right through--making the jacket way more than just breathable, (I thought the breathable R2 was associated with the "furry" part), but not very practical in many circumstances. These pads also give the jacket a poor fit: the pads in the one I got, (after trying on several), were still baggy and asymmetrical. I don't really believe that they are there to give the jacket more durability in "high wear areas." I don't really see those as high wear areas at all. (Wear it for several days, also while in your sleeping bag and you'll see these arm "pads" begin to stretch an and bag more and more. The return of the all fur--specially around the neck would be great. Otherwise another excellent product from a great company.
Pali at Patagonia on 12/01/2011
Love Patagonia products; however, I did not like the oversized left flap on jacket collar. The R2 is better for layering. If you want a fleece jacket to wear by itself I would recommend the Better Sweater. If you want something to wear in cold/winter weather I would recommend the R4 jacket. The R2 is soft and comfortable but it's definitely made to be a base layer for extreme cold and/or winter sport.

I love Patagonia, but I have one big complaint about this jacket. Putting it on and taking it off is an arduous task. There is no liner in the sleeves, so the fleece tugs on your shirt, forcing you to almost tear it off, rather than gracefully slide them off. Once on though, its very comfortable and light weight.

extra light weight

As you find with all Pat. gear, beautifull, functional design that performs above the rest under all conditions. Love this superlight Jacket it packs very small, weight of a handkerchief, great for cold snaps when you don't need bulky. Sleeves too long for short people,

Not a Slim

It is well made, cool looking and soft to the touch. But it is too loosely made. I tried similarly sizied fleeces (small) and they fit tighter. Therefore, the jacket will not retain warmth.
