never want to take it off!

I purchased this jacket a couple months ago. I live in the South, where the avg. daily temp is about 50 degrees. I use the R2 as an every day jacket, as well as for fieldwork. So far, it has worked great for me. If I layer up a little underneath it, I stay toasty warm. And if it is a warmer day, or I am moving around a lot, I do not get overheated. The best thing about it is how soft it is. I really appreciate the flap of fleece on the backside of the zipper that keeps the zipper from rubbing against my chin when I have it fully zipped up. It also looks great. I get a lot of compliments on it. I got it in black. I would have preferred a color, but I wasn't a fan of the contrasting colored panels underneath the arms. I am 5'4", 150 pounds. I got a size L, and it is great. I like my jackets to have a bit of a looser fit. Plenty of room in the hips. Easy to wear a couple layers underneath. The sleeves are a little too long for me, but that is the case with all my clothes! The only problem I have found is that if you get the sleeves wet, the stretchy non-fleece fabric takes a really long time to dry.

I love it but...

I ordered this in the x-large in the gekko green. The x-large was way too bulky, and the green did not look good next to the grey. I held on to it for a few days because it would look good under the torrent shell green jacket I bought. But it was too ugly on me to wear as a stand alone jacket. I couldn't justify keeping it just for an underlayer. The size did allow me to layer several things underneath. I decided to exchange it for the fog color in the large. I feel like it is a totally different jacket. This will be very functional as a light weight spring fall evening casual jacket. The fog color looks great. I can't layer a lot under it but the x-large just was way too bulky. Seems to be a big size jump between the large and x-large. I wish there was a size between.

Nice Lightweight layer, runs large but short

This jacket is short hitting high at the hip (would cover the top button of my lowrider jeans but that is about it). It also seems wide, but this allows for stuffing the pockets to the brim (wallet, keys, cell, shades are not a problem). I could easily stash a volleyball into mine. I am 5'4, 135 lbs, curvy with a 30 inch waist. I ordered the small and am glad I sized down. I am a medium in patagonia jackets and pullovers normally. I could probably fit into an xsmall if I wanted a form fitted look as the side panels stretch, but I would worry about the length of the jacket if I did. Also, there is an embroidered R in a square box about the size of a quarter on the left forearm.

Feathers

Feathers are probably the ideal technical clothing, since they work perfectly in all conditions. But until we learn to grow them, this jacket is the next best thing.
I have never owned a piece that offers such a wide temperature range. Wearing it over a Wool1 t-shirt the breeze cuts right through it, making it about as warm as a long-sleeve t-shirt. But put a hooded Houdini jacket on top & you have a remarkably toasty insulating piece & an unbeatable ultralight combo that works for 95% of long, hard ski-mountaineering needs: wind, light precip, warm, cold...I hardly ever wear anything else.
Taller women should consider buying the men's jacket, which lacks the the fashionable constricted chest & shoulders, as well as the hip tutu that will hit you around the waist.
nisus at Patagonia on 07/25/2010

THIS JACKET IS PERFECT!

I either hike or backpack (8-15 miles) most weekends and this jacket is my favorite layer. I love how it is VERY lightweight, stretchy, soft and quite warm. However, it is not TOO warm.. it keeps the chill off, yet not restricting and doesn't over-heat me. My other fleece pieces would make me too hot on a hike, yet I would freeze in just my shirt (I get cold very easily). I would never go on any adventure without this great jacket. The fit is perfect and it has a lot of flex... not confining at all. I would definitely reccomend this jacket for anyone who appreciates the benefit of finding the perfect layering system for an active lifestyle.

a tribute to change

I have 5 "old R2" jackets. I have worn one almost every day for the past four years. The weightless warmth and versatility of the garment won me over in a big way. The chest pocket was also ideal for carrying my iPhone and I need my phone with me almost always. So, I was hesitant to purchase the new R2. But, I jumped in and have to say that I am thrilled with the new design. It lays flatter on the waist; the overall fit is profoundly better; and the chest pocket still holds an iPhone perfectly with no "in and out" struggle. I will start my new collection......cheers to the innovation and preservation of a fabulous garment.

A fleece that sheds dog hair? Yup!

I am 5' tall and 108 lbs. and ordered the XS, which is rather baggy on me especially in the waist. Honestly, I can hardly find any outdoor clothes that fit me well and, sadly, this jacket is included. But, this jacket does something special: the material sheds dog hair! Most fleece attracts dog hair like crazy with each hair weaving itself into the fabric. But, I am happy, happy, happy that I can keep wearing this jacket without looking like my dog's twin. It's also warm and very lightweight, although perhaps a bit delicate. A pretty good product: now if it could be redesigned with a more defined waist!
Walkswithdog at Patagonia on 10/28/2012

very useful

I bought this to use as a layer under a lightweight jacket, during spring and autumn travel seasons when temperatures are so variable. It adds no bulk, but quite a bit of warmth, remarkable for its light weight. It can be easily folded and compressed into a small packing size and is no bother if taken off and tied around the waist. My one criticism, at least for the black version that I bought, is that it created quite a bit of black lint on light-colored tops, during its initial wearing. I am hopeful that after a drycleaning or laundering that problem will disappear. Otherwise, highly recommend this item.
elainesl at Patagonia on 04/07/2012

I wear this jacket so often, even my kids tell me to take it off!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I live in the Pacific Northwest where it's all about layering and waterproof gear. Since the winters are fairly mild, I can get away without having to wear bulky down jackets. This jacket is perfect for those milder, not raining days. It is a snug fit and stretches nicely. I am 5'6 and 140 lbs and bought a small, which is perfect. I get compliments on the color and the jacket every time I wear it. I am a devoted Patagonia buyer and am never disappointed. Moosejaw never disappoints either, and always manages to make me smile in their descriptions and other type.

New Favorite Jacket!

My fiancé got an R2 about a week before I got mine. After he started wearing his everyday this fall, I began to think, even though I'm not a skier maybe there is some need in my life for this INCREDIBLE mid layer. And there was. After getting it, I've been finding every excuse to wear it, it's been a great evening jacket this fall and I've been wearing it as an insulator for my red rainshadow-- the maroon R2 might clash in color, but in terms of staying dry and warm in Boston's infamous rainy autumn weather it's been unbeatable!

Negative Reviews:

Marginal At Best

I really wanted to like this jacket. I had heard that the sizing was tricky and I went to a store to try on and compare the two sizes that I was considering. I am 5'10 and sized up, which was a little large in the width, but was necessary for the length in the sleeves and the body. (Aside: I have noticed that Patagonia has started shortening the length of their jackets recently, like with the down sweater, which is also incredibly short.) A bigger issue is no type of elastic or drawcord at the bottom hem; the result is that the jacket gaps open and looks ridiculous when zipped all the way up; in addition, this also lets in cold air and prevents the successful capturing of your body heat. Another problem is that the collar is too high and the small piece of extra fleece meant to be soft against your neck and protect it from the zipper, just sticks out and looks odd when it is unzipped.
After two washings, it is starting to pill on the inside and although soft, is not very warm. I was planning to use this as a layering piece anyway, but I can see huge spaces in the weave grid in the fabric, so it is not too warm. Also, with regards to construction, the zipper is terrible and bubbles out unflatteringly if you have it zipped while you are sitting down. I have only had it for 1 month, but 3 separate times the zipper opened and started unzipping from the bottom. I hope this is not a sign of things to come, but as a loyal Patagonia customer for almost two decades, who has purchased multiple items over the years for myself, friends and family, I am hoping these are just exceptions, but based on similar reviews of other products, it may be indicative of a shift in quality and a move towards poorer construction.
PedalPusher at Patagonia on 02/22/2011

Too expensive for what you get

I am returning this. Beautiful color, but way overpriced for how thin it is. Also too short . I'm 5'6 and it barely touches the top of my jeans. If I raise my arms up a little bit, my belly exposed. I would think it was decent at $80 or less. But for the price its not worth it. I suppose if I were needing it for a layer for hiking, it might be worth keeping (if it were less expensive) but I was just looking for something to wear to and from the gym and am going to pick up a north face khumbu for 1/2 the price of this coat.

Be careful of sizing & fit

This is a beautiful jacket! I ordered it in the green Watercress color and it's very pretty. The material is so soft and warm, but it's also lightweight and breathable.

However, I am very disappointed in the fit of this jacket. I wear a medium in juniors shirts and wear a size 6 pants. I ordered a medium in this jacket, and it's honestly very big. The body of the jacket comes so far away from my body. I could easily wear a size small. The bottom of the jacket barely comes to the top of my pants. All of my shirts hang below the bottom hem of the jacket, and it just looks very awkward.

Try before you buy! I was so excited to get this jacket, and now I don't even want to wear it.

Not the best for tall women

I'm 5'8 and 130lbs. Generally a small fits well, once in a while I go with medium if its too tight through the bust. Ordered the small and returned it right away. Fit well through the shoulders, and slightly too short in arms. Super disappointed in how short the jacket was. It fit at or slightly above my natural waist. It really chopped my body in half and made me look wide through my middle. I didn't exchange it for the medium because the length would have fit similar. I guess I'm more comfortable in a hip length coat. I think it would be very helpful if they used actual people modeling the clothes on the website. It would be helpful to see how clothes are cut and how they hang.

Disappointingly short and boxy

I LOVED my first R2, purchased around 2000. It could do anything, from Antarctic science (low profile layer under a parka, caught and kept the sun on warm days) to dog walking on cool summer nights. I wore it threadbare years ago, and finally decided to replace it. The R2 of 2012 is a very different jacket from my old favorite. The sleeves are over an inch shorter, the hem hits much higher on the hip, and the overall shape is boxy almost to the point of sloppy. The generous length and sleek styling of the old made it very versatile and kept the warm in. From a taller (5' 9") person's perspective, this ill-fitting new iteration looks like a move toward cost savings through fabric conservation. Patagonia, I'm disappointed.
Redwood at Patagonia on 05/07/2012

Not as good as before

Last year's R2 is awesome. The new R2 is much like many other fleece jackets out there. I miss the technical detailing of the older version - taped pockets, slimmer R1 cuffs and neck. This year's jacket is also not as fitted. Perhaps it will appeal to a wider audience for casual wear. I for one, am going to buy as many old R2's as I can find.
Anonymous at Patagonia on 01/07/2011

Runs short and loose

I brought this into the backcountry as a warmer layer. However due to its looseness, it was quite a drafty night. Additionally, it runs quite short. I just couldn't seem to stay warm in this jacket on a 50 degree night. I only wear this jacket in the frontcountry now. It is a good fall and spring jacket.
Frances at Moosejaw on 01/27/2012

weird fit

I'm disappointed with how this jacket fits. It's very boxy and baggy on me and big in the waist/sides/back. I'm 5'6" with a 28" waist and I bought the medium. Otherwise it's comfortable and lightweight. I am considering sending it back though because the fit is not flattering or worth the price.
LouiseD at Patagonia on 09/22/2011

Good but not for the price

I really like the color of the jacket. It fits well except for the sleeves being a little short. The smooth fabric on the inner arms and sides became pilled/fuzzy within a month. It should not do that for the price its worth.
