Windproof protection for frigid conditions in a single, stretchy package.
Put the “wonderful” back into “winter wonderland” when the wind kicks up and the temps drop down. Our warmest fleece, R4® features a toasty and stretchy fabric package with variegated-fiber R2® on the inside, a windproof laminate in the middle, and full-loft R2 on the outside, making it a champ alone or under a shell. Its lack of shoulder seams allows pack-wearing comfort, and the high-placed handwarmer pockets stay clear of a harness. 100% recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Our warmest fleece, made to enhance mobility in frigid temperatures and prevent windchill nightmares. Now with a toastier fabric package - variegated fiber R2® on the inside and full-loft R2® on the outside, sandwiching a windproof laminate - our stretchy R4 excels alone or under a shell. Its lack of shoulder seams allows pack-wearing comfort, and the high-placed handwarmer pockets stay clear of a harness. Made in USA. Regulator® SystemRegulator is an integrated system (base, insulation, shell) that works in unison to keep you dryer and more comfortable over a wider range of conditions than a traditional waterproof layering system.
The Men's R4 Jacket by Patagonia is made from dense velour fleece, combined with a stretchy windproof laminate for toasty warmth in frigid conditions.
How to make yourself impervious to winter's bone-chilling gales? Well, you could stay inside. But for the non-couch-potato types, Patagonia's warmest fleece provides high-loft 7.4-oz R2 (Polartec Thermal Pro polyester that's 40% recycled) on the inside and a velour fleece face (13.5-oz Polartec Windbloc polyester), with a stretchy windproof laminate sandwiched between. It keeps you mobile and toasty, and excels alone or under a shell. The lack of shoulder seams allows pack-wearing comfort, and the one chest and two high-placed handwarmer pockets (above harness-line) close with invisible zippers.

The windproof Patagonia Men's R4 Fleece Jacket fends off freezing temps and biting winds as you climb the ridge or schuss down the slope. Patagonia sandwiched a windproof laminate between high-loft, wicking fleece to create the R4 Jacket. Polartec Thermal Pro fleece efficiently holds onto your body heat, and the grid-patterned lining pulls perspiration away from your body to keep you comfortable as you work or play hard in the cold. Because the R4 stretches, you won't feel inhibited as you reach with your ice axe, plant with your ski pole, or reach down to adjust your crampon. This regular-fit jacket layers well, so you can pull it on over long johns or wear it under a shell. You'll appreciate details such as the lack of shoulder seams so you can wear your pack comfortably and high hand pockets so your harness doesn't cover the zippered openings.

High Quality! | |

This jacket is exactly what I hoped it would be. I purchased one large in North Sea, and I could not be happier. I am very confident that wearing this jacket as an alternative to my bulky winter jackets will be a breath of fresh air. I was skeptical about the venting pockets after I made the purchase, but honestly, I don't mind. They are the style where once you open them, you can pretty much feel inside the jacket from near the top of your chest to just about where normal pockets would rest. Even though the exterior of the pockets are a little higher up and in on the face of the jacket, I will still use them for car keys and a cell phone when I need to do so. I'll also take advantage of them to keep my hands warm if I'm running from my house to the car or vice versa. If you're purchasing Patagonia, you expect quality; that's what I received. I have read a number of other reviews on many of their similar products, and I am very confident that my purchase was the best decision for me. I live in Southern IL, but our family is from the Twin Cities, so we definitely know what cold weather is, and I plan to use this jacket as my regular primary jacket on any day that is not raining during the cold winter months.

This is the Best Jacket I Own.

I've had this jacket for two years - I wear it nearly every day between November and March, and it still looks as good as the day I got it. I have a 1+ mile walk each way (in Minneapolis) to the bus stop, and it handles everything from +40 down to below zero (even in gusty winds) extremely comfortably. While it isn't designed to be worn in a deluge, it sheds light to moderate rain just fine, as long as you're not out in it for too long.

| I live in Ga. I have tried most every combination for warmth/wind in a single layer. Denali...wind cuts through. Alchemy no wind, no warmth either. TNF redpoint. warm wind block no venting you just sweat. This R4 is it.It was a wind chill of around 20,real temp was 33 a couple of weeks ago as I was watching some rugby. just sitting and spectating for over 2 hours.no aerobic stuff .Only wore a cap 3 long sleeve. TOASTY AS EVER. No wind period! I have worn it in 58 and sunny watching games too. Just unzip the pockets even an inch or two and the R4 vents to perfection. My pockets hold heaps of stuff, without worry of lost items when venting. Bottom cinch is smooth and easy to adjust. Please don't waste your time with other gear. This will do in 3 seasons easy.I am 6', 248lbs. XL is roomy ,streches with good arm length. The staff at the Atlanta store are helpful w/out being pushy, and buzzing around you like a fly.Very courteous, and knowledgeable too. They stand behind everything they sell.JUST GET 1.......... | |

Warmest most comfortable fleece jacket you can purchase here
| Rating: | ![]() |
This jacket is by far the warmest, softest, most windproof fleece jacket you can own. It won't "do it all" because it's too warm for heavy activity, but when it is blistering cold outside, this is the one to grab. Considering that there are only a handful of truly windproof fleeces out there for Men, this is the only jacket that uses a windbloc laminate sandwiched between two layers of R2 high loft fleece (MHW has the Lynx/Mynx for Women which is similar to the R4). As for sheer warmth, nothing from TNF or MHW will match this jacket. Just keep in mind that like many technical fleeces, this one also comes with pockets placed higher (for backpacking), and it has long monkey arms. Another note is that this jacket is waterproof in a sense that it'll keep water out, but the outer fleece will get wet, so an outer shell is recommended. It fits normal, with room to layer, and I wouldn't recommend sizing down for more technical fit because the torso gets considerably shorter too.

Absolutely Bomber. | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought this jacket while Guiding in Colorado during the summer and attending college outside of Chicago the rest of the year. This jacket is absolutely BOMBPROOF when it comes to cold, windy conditions (such as on Michigan Avenue during winter in "the windy city"). You can wear an R4 in -20 degree weather with the wind beating on you and not feel a thing. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better, more lightweight, or more wearable winter layer. Only 2 cautions: 1. it's SO warm you really shouldn't wear it skiing or hiking as it would cause your chest to catch on fire, but it's a great option for a basecamp layer or for wearing at the end of a cold hike. And 2. it's pretty sturdy, doesn't fold down into a tiny package as do some low-end (and non-bombproof) fleeces. But if you're looking for something to keep you incredibly warm while not adding tons of bulk, get it. You won't be sorry. | |

All other fleeces rendered useless!

I have owned this piece for almost two years now and it never lets me down. Living in MN, windchill is always a factor so you need to have something that blocks the wind. TNF's Denali might be warm around the house, but with the slightest breeze you might as well not be wearing it at all. The R4 cuts the wind and is incredibly warm. I'm a big fan of the higher pockets too, and you don't need pitzips when your pockets double as vents. I am 6'0"/165 lbs and I ordered a Large so I could layer underneath on colder days, though a Medium would have worked a bit better if I wasn't going to layer. With this jacket all you need to remember is to throw a hardshell in your pack in case of rain or snow. Hands down, this is the best fleece ever and I won't buy another one until this one wears out, and then I'll get the latest R4 again!

Great winter jacket - great fit & very toasty!
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This is the coziest, most comfortable jacket I've ever worn. I'm a slim 6' 5" and the XL fits me perfectly. I've been out all day in 35 degree weather with 25 mph North winds, and this jacket kept my core warm and toasty. It's just a bit stretchy, completely windproof, but very breathable - never clammy like my old Windstopper fleece this replaced. And it's pretty darn stylish, too - not too "techy" like some other fleece jackets (Mnt Hardware). The quality and detailing are what I've come to expect from Patagonia. I've been looking for a windproof jacket with decent insulating qualities for quite some time. I looked at every soft shell on the market, then tried out a Marmot Gravity soft shell, but returned it due to the boxy fit and lack of insulation. The R4 is exactly what I was looking for. I probably wouldn't have coughed up $215 for one, but I didn't have to. I'm an extremely happy customer. | |

| There is a reason if you research this jacket the reviews are unanimously good because its the best jacket you can buy considering price, specs and design. If you want a jacket that's breathable yet toasty warm, lightweight, windproof, water-resistant, excellent craftsmanship and design the R4 has it all without needing additional layers. Patagonia being the environment friendly vendor is the cherry on top. It's so water-resistant its dang near waterproof. I emptied my water bottle on this jacket and the water beads off. I'm from Seattle WA and wearing this daily I have never felt wet/cold with this on and we're talking downpour torrential on a daily basis. The jacket has a curious fuzzy look so don't be surprised if the ladies want to feel you up. The R4 is pricey but that's what you pay for this pinnacle of jacket technology. Try to find it on sale got mine for $150! Highly recommended, definitely buying a few more for the family. | |

great jacket | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This jacket is consistent with the high quality of other Patagonia products. very very warm, but still lightweight, feels great to the touch, excellent ventilation system, and good wind block properties Two complaints: -Pockets zip from down to up. Since the pockets are HUGE (they double as vents), it becomes annoying to have your hands in your pockets on a windy day, because the wind slips into the the enormous pockets/vents...it would be nice to be able to zip the pocket from up to down so that you can put your hands in your pockets on a windy day, and keep the pockets half-zipped, without being at the mercy of the wind -the zipper quality is good enough, but is clearly inferior to those on the R2 jacket...as this is a more expensive model, I would expect the zipper quality to be at least on par with the less expensive models. | |

Want windproof and warmth, you've got it!
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I got a Lightweight R4 and a Marmot Windstopper fleece before I ever really thought about the R4. Funny thing was, both the other fleeces were windproof but not warm. More shells than jacket. The R4 has replaced both of them as an all around fleece for me. The R2 lining slides easily over underlayers or a sweatshirt, and feels nice against bare skin at the neck and the wrists. No seams along the shoulders means that wearing a pack over this is not a problem. Got my girlfriend one too, and she loves it. My only issue is that with my build, 42 inch chest, 17.5 inch neck, the zipper sticks if I pull it all the way up and try to then pull it down. Really a function of bending the zipper track, and if I straighten it out, problem solved. | |

Not Up to Patagonia Standards

| I recently ordered this jacket online and immediately sent it back after trying it on. There was absolutely nothing--I repeat--nothing about this jacket that looked or felt warm, natural or of high quality. It reminded me of those fake shearlings so common at places like Burlington Coat Factory. Patagonia can and has done better than this. | |

R-4 Jacket Perfect..EXCEPT FOR...
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This R-4 Jacket is so warm and comfortable...I just loved it!...Untill....The zipper malfunctioned 3 times in the first week. The zipper became unzipped top to bottom and stuck in the middle of the opening. I couldn't even get the jacket off! The problem is that the teeth on the YKK Zipper are too small. Patagonia will need to re-design and add a heavier zipper to make this jacket as durable as it should be. Regretfully...I will be returning this otherwise awesome jacket. As usuall with Patagonia..they will stand behind every item they sell. Customer service was very accomidating. West Yellowstone, Montana | |

This is a great technical jacket that does everything it was designed to do. However, fashionably speaking, worn with the collar turned down so you can see the inside around the zipper, etc. it LOOKS cheap and lays poorly. So, while at this price, none can compare in terms of performance, I will gladly pay a bit more for a better finish in this area. Patagonia, I'll check back with you next year.
