The Patagonia Men's R4 is an impressively warm and windproof fleece jacket. You might be thinking "the R4 is the highest number R jacket in the series... it must be the warmest".... well, that's awfully presumptuous of you, but you're right. This time. The R4 is comprised of 3 layers: the outer is super warm high-loft R4® fabric, the middle is Polartec® Windbloc® polyester with a windproof laminate, and the inner layer is an R2® grid. You might be thinking "sounds like you're wearing a sandwich".... well, this time you're not so right. Wearing a sandwich would be strange and not feasible and wouldn't give you this level of warmth, comfort and mobility with minimal bulk. So quit trying to wear a sandwich, silly, and check out the Patagonia R4 mid-layer.
With technical fleece fabrics and a stretchy, windproof outer laminate, the Men's R4 Fleece Jacket holds the distinction as Patagonia's warmest fleece outer layer. Patagonia's Regulator fleece material has seen various incarnations over the past decade, and this season the warm, breathable, and highly compressible material utilizes a hybrid construction to further improve comfort. Soft R2 grid fleece lines the interior and provides soothing warmth while the outside is treated to Polartec Windbloc (separate from the windproof laminate) to take the bite out of the bitter cold winds of fall and winter. Wear the R4 alone when you're tearing your way up a new climbing route or use it as your insulating layer when you're sitting on a knife ridge waiting for a break in the weather so you can make the final push to the summit.
Our warmest fleece outer layer, the windproof R4® Jacket provides superior warmth and moisture management.
Things that can't be overdone: deep powder, clear skies and furnace-like warmth for the Vallée Blanche in January. Our R4® fabric is the warmest fleece available, with improved Polartec® Windbloc® polyester that has a windproof laminate sandwiched between a high-loft exterior and an R2® grid interior. This toasty, full-stretch package features Sonic/Stitch construction on all seams, to reduce bulk and enhance suppleness. The improved fit is closer and more technical, while brushed tricot lines the collar and a soft, kissing-welt zipper garage at the chin gives next-to-skin comfort. The updated cuffs and drawcord hem have more elastic for a better seal, and slim, clean-finished zippers close the single chest and two handwarmer pockets. With two internal mesh drop-in pockets, offset shoulder yokes for pack-wearing comfort.
Patagonia's warmest fleece outer layer, the windproof R4 Jacket has a high-loft polyester face fabric with full stretch and an R2® grid interior to provide superior warmth and moisture-management.

This jacket replaces a Patagonia fleece jacket from 30+ years ago for me! At first I was shocked at the lightness of it and the greatly reduced bulk compared with the fleece of those days. But even though I have not yet had it in really cold weather or in the snow, I can tell that it is a warmer jacket, and the windbreak is a welcome feature. The fit is nice, tending to slim. The sleeves are a tad long for me but that's fine in a cold weather jacket. I like how the collar stands up without getting in your way. I like the pockets: 2 handwarmers, 1 breast pocket, and 2 large interior pockets. The waist cinch cord is definitely a good feature. If there is anything more I could want from this jacket, it would be some sort of internal cuffs in the sleeves, but that's a minor issue. This is a beautiful, good fitting, classy looking jacket and I love it!
I originally ordered a medium in the jacket but I ended up having to return it and get a large as this jacket fits a little like a "slim-fit" although Patagonia says it is "regular-fit." I debated between the retro-x jacket and this one but in the end it was the better fit of the R4 that won me over as the retro-x was just too baggy on my tall skinny frame (6'2", 180 lbs). It fits well with a flannel on underneath it but much more than that and it would start to be a little tight so you may want to size up if you plan to use it with more layering.
