The Men's R4 Jacket is Patagonia's warmest fleece outer layer, the windproof R4 Jacket has a high-loft polyester face fabric with full stretch and an R2 grid interior to provide superior warmth and moisture-management.
Things that can't be overdone: deep powder, clear skies and furnace-like warmth for the Vall¿e Blanche in January. Patagonia's R4 fabric is the warmest fleece available, with improved Polartec Windbloc polyester that has a windproof laminate sandwiched between a high-loft exterior and an R2 grid interior. This toasty, full-stretch package features sonic-welding and micro-stitch technology on the zipper seams to reduce bulk, creating a more sleek and supple silhouette. Microfleece lines the collar, cuffs and hem for comfort, and the zippered handwarmers and single chest pocket secure necessities. Offset shoulder yokes allow for pack-wearing comfort, and an interior wind flap prevents chill through the zipper.

I have this in the Large, I am 6'1" and 195 lbs with an athletic build and I wear this often. It is a little bit baggy, but that allows for good layering. The quality is superb, as I have learned to expect with Patagonia. It does a decent job of keeping me warm in everything up to a light wind and wicks moisture like a champ. You will not regret this purchase. I think it is similar to the Gorilla Fur jacket, but seems to have a little better fit for an athletic build. One warning, this doesn't work very well as a technical piece. I would say it is more for general hiking, base camp, or around town. I wouldn't want to climb in this or depend on it for skiing. It just doesn't sinch down enough to justify wearing it in those pursuits.
This is my 2nd Patagonia R4. You can not wear them out. Wears like iron but as soft as wool. I still wear my first one, and it looks as new as my new one. Have to check the labels to make sure. Got a Large and an extra large for layering. I like to wear them to the store or out for the evening. When it is really cold, I put some Patagonia Capolene on first or a Patagonia R1.. then the R4.
I also wear one while running every winter morning and I'm never cold. The moisture is wicked away from my body and I'm very comfortable during the run. After the run, hang it up to dry and it's ready to go in an hour.
Can't go wrong with Patagonia
Wicked jacket. Has kept me warm in high winds and temps down to the upper teens (that's about as cold as it has gotten in N Alabama this year). I get the feeling I would have no trouble keeping warm in colder temps, although anything below 20 F would probably require some layering. I've had no qualms with the windproofing yet, you can even hold your arm out the window while driving and feel nothing. It lacks a cinch at the waist and sleeves, but it still gets the job done quite well.
Warm, though bulky
This is my #1 choice for windproof, super cozy fleece jackets above all others. It's fuzzy and soft like bear, and warm like a real insulated shell.

Really great material, very comfortable great water resistance-really saved me when I was caught in a rain storm, but if you're a hardcore climber or hiker this probably isn't for you since it doesn't cinch at the waist or wrists. Also feel the mesh pockets should be enclosed, but I really do love this coat for cruising around a cold, wintry city.
This was my second R4. Same great quality, though I preferred the less furry, older version. Also the older version seemed a bit more wind resistant - still the best I've found!
I love this jacket. Trim design and fully warm. It was my main winter jacket. Sheds light misty rain easily and maintains enough thick pile for a pedestrian commute to work.

I'm writing this review in hopes it prevents even one person from purchasing this jacket as I did). I have nothing against Patagonia and own other products of theirs that I love. That said, let me start with a couple positives.
1. It's wind proof as advertised
2. It's made of a comfortable fleece material inside and out making it comfy to wear around town with a t shirt underneath. (which is clearly all it is designed to be used for).
Those are the only good things about this jacket. For starters, as documented by most other people, it has no drawstring which is unacceptable in a windproof jacket and enough of a reason alone not to purchase.
2. Interior hand pockets are made of mesh which essentially makes them useless for keeping your hands warm due to all the cold air flying up through the base of the jacket.
3. There are no interior pockets.
4. Comfy interior fleece means no moisture wicking. Would be okay if there were pit zips to help ventilation when temperature changes but there aren.
5. Sleeve ends are large and fuzzy, I'd prefer a more tapered arm ending to keep out cold and free up hands.
For the price of this jacket you should receive a top quality jacket with high end features which you simply do not. Save yourself the frustration and money and get a mountain hardware tech or even a denali, both are far superior for significantly less money. Patagonia should be ashamed to call this their high end fleece. It is clearly designed only for people wanting the patagonia name so they can walk around and be seen in the high end shopping district of their choosing before they hit the steakhouse for dinner.
I was looking for a warm fleece that was also wind proof. Many are either or, but the R4 claims to do both. The material is top notch and it truly is warm and blocks the wind very well. Despite those plusses, there are a few problems that are, in my mind, unforgivable. As mentioned in other reviews, the lack of a cinch cord is huge. Pretty much negates the wind proof feature if you're doing any moving around whatsoever. Second, the fit is HORRIBLE! I'm a long and lean 6'5" 220lbs - pretty much a perfect candidate for an XL. The sleeves and shoulders were good but the waste of the jacket was about about 6-8" too big around my waste. It seriously ballooned out like a cone. My wife actually laughed at me when she saw it. Might not have been such a show stopper if there had been a cinch cord but I just couldn't get over these two big problems. I've definitely noticed a trend with Patagonia fleece products of late that they are WAY too big in the abdomen area, not sure who exactly they are marketing to, certainly not the climber/biker/skier crowd that doesn't need extra room in the belly... Verdict - skip this one.
I purchased this jacket for its warmth and windstopping cability but was very disappointed when I found out it lacked a sinch in the waste and cuffs. Although when hit directly by gusts of winds you felt nothing, in several diffrent climbing positions wind chill easily travels up the front and back. I still loved the jackets so I took it upon myself to add an elastic cord and stoppers to the waist line. Patagonia could make this jacket far more effective adding such functions on their own..
I have wanted an R4 for a long time and was very excited when I got one this past Christmas. I was not aware of that this jacket did not have a draw cord or any elastic in the cuffs. This is a deal breaker for me even after trying a smaller size. The sleeves are too long. The jacket itself is very warm and extremely comfortable.
I bought one of these this year but sent it right back; a "windproof" sweater but with no bottom drawstring? The wind blew right up through the bottom. I couldn't believe it.
At the pricey retail of $260, you'd think there would be a draw cord to cinch the waist? Patagonia, what have you done!?

Maybe it is because of my build (5'11, 150) but I tried the M and then the S, and for both sizes, the fit in the shoulders, arms and waist is awkward and uncomfortable. Great material, very warm and windproof, but strange fitting....
