Huge improvement over the last model!

The designers at Patagonia got it right this time. So many improvements over the last model, I don't even know where to begin. The fit is so much better. The updated silhouette fits better and looks nicer than the previous model. The sleeves are still a little long (I have to believe Patagonia has a good reason for this, I just wish they would clue us in) but not nearly as bad as before. Something about the material feels different too. It feels softer and seems to have a shorter pile. The combination of the material and the new cut serve to keep you feeling warmer than in the previous version. I live in Southern California so I know that cold to me is cool to a lot of others around the country. Still, in many cases this works as technical apparel for me. By combining this with a baselayer and soft shell I have a perfectly functional system to keep me dry and warm for those fall and winter hikes mired in a marine layer. Of course this jacket is a great casual piece as well that you can wear to the coffee shop or movies and look sharp while feeling comfy. Good job Patagonia. With this version you took the old version and got it so much closer to everything the Simple Synchilla Jacket could be.

GOES EVERYWHERE

I own many Synchilla pullovers, but this zip-front Synchilla jacket is my new favorite. Same warmth and soft hand as always, but I can now adjust for temperature while I am hiking. This way, I will enjoy its comfort for a very long season. On top of its utility, it has a neat appearance. Goes almost anywhere. My wife, who borrowed it once and fell in love with it, has asked me to order one for her. We are both quality-conscious, and we know that Synchilla wears extremely well. This is yet another superior Patagonia product.

Simply the best

I have been buying a version of this jacket since the early eighties when I was ski patroling at Breckenridge. I always have one in my truck or pack. It is a perfect layer. It has always been one of my favorite staples and in my humble opinion one of the best products you make. I find the chest zipper pocket to be especially handy for glasses. It has a feel and texture that the competitors don't match. It holds up great and returns to a pristine condition even after repeated washings.

ain't worn it out yet

I still have one of these from back in the day when it was called bunting. Can't imagine being without this jacket. You can't camp without it, and it has the arm movement for fall mountain biking, it makes a great pillow in the woods, an impromptu paddling seat, it's a great middle layer for skate skiing, a warm-up for speed skating, and a pinch hitting mid-layer for just about anything you can think of. The tall collar and Y-joint sleeves are key. Build the rest of your kit around this.

One of The Best Jackets I Own

The Simple Synchilla is destined to become a classic! It does it all. Tight weave blocks mild winds, good length, lined pockets, zippers on pockets, chest pocket. I use it as a stand alone jacket or as a layer when the weather turns. I own two and love them both. If I had one design suggestion I would ask for reinforced sleeves at elbows. The first one of these that I owned had this feature - which was very nice. Sadly that jacket was stolen in Sao Paulo last year.

Nearly Perfect

The Men's Simple Synchilla Jacket is a great fleece for the money, especially since I caught mine in red on sale. The fit is snug, but that is how I like it. It's also very fashionable and I have received a lot of compliments on it. The fleece does shed a bit, especially at first, but that is all I could imagine improving on it. I wear this daily, and I'm sure I will for quite some time to come. Highly recommended.

Very Handy Fleece Jacket

I bought this as a gift for my father. He loves using it, loves that its warm, its lightweight and very versatile. The only drawback is that the arms run long. Because he lives in the midwest, he uses this around the house for extra warmth and when he goes out of town for meetings or vacation, this is his go to jacket for layering and can easily be packed in his carry-on.

dont let the price fool you...

just like the title says...its a cheaper end fleece that patagonia offers, however it is the best bang for your buck. it is lightweight and its very durable, zippered pockets are great. i have worn it in sub 10 degree temps, with a flannel underneath and its warm. i have worn it layered underneath a rain shell. its a little wind proof too. perfect for going to class, getting coffee, or post surf.

Great Jacket

This is a great simple basic jacket without all the frills common to many others. I have two, one a little over a year old and one I just bought on sale. They remind me of the first Synchilla jackets from the mid 1980's. I still have one of those in a box someplace. It has been places. I'm certain my new ones will have an equally interesting history!

Very Pleased With Synchilla Jacket

I enjoy both your synchilla vests and jackets. They are soft, just the right weight, and in the men's version, the arms are long enough.
It would help to attach more thorough washing instructions so that the synchilla material can remain soft.
Also, please continue to offer the more subtle colors: sage, that warm light brown. Thanks for the low key design. Not everyone likes bright colors, or loud designs.
Thanks.

Negative Reviews:

Sleeves cut too small

I bought a Synchilla jacket about 12 years ago & loved it. It was falling apart so I wanted to replace it with a new one. I was extremely disappointed in the fit. The sleeves are cut way too narrow. I returned it immediately. You are hard pressed to wear anything but a T-shirt under it if you expect to get your arms in the sleeves without jamming your shirt sleeves up to your arm pits. My old Synchilla jacket had nice loose fitting sleeves with a bit of elastic at the wrist - it was a jacket you could actually wear over clothes. The new model is not really a jacket because it is hard to put on over clothes. Badly done folks!

I hate my Simple Synchilla Jacket

I've been buying Patagonia products since they started as a company (I'm an old guy), and normally I love everything Patagonia, but I have to say I hate my Patagonia Simple Synchilla Jacket. Mine's black, and it sheds continually, leaving your clothes covered with black stuff under it, making everything look dirty. I've washed it a bunch of times to see if that would help, but it didn't. My advice is to look elsewhere, the SS is that abnormal Patagonia product that doesn't cut it.
DocDay at Patagonia on 10/04/2011

Fit is NOT Improved

Wanted a second simple Synchilla Jacket since I like my first one so much but the fit on this so called improved model is noteably snugger especially in the sleeves. Can't remedy it by going up a sier because then becomes too big and too long. It is now a Slim fit in my view rather than a regular fit as claimed but that really highlights the one problem I have with Patagonia products--inconsistent sizing. Wiah they would bring back the previous Synchilla model

Not what I was expecting

I bought this jacket but wasn't really happy with it and returned it. I found the fit snug, and the jacket was hard to put on because the fabric dragged over my shirt or sweater. The blessing is Patagonia is a great company and stands behind their products and promptly accepted the return.
TJMeyer59 at Patagonia on 04/07/2012

its alright but nothing special the one thing that really pisted me off were there are no draw strings on these patagonia fleeces.

Deborah Buschman at Backcountry.com on 07/31/2011

flimsy and shiny

My old North Face jacket still has more heft than this jacket.

Neutral Reviews:

chest pocket is awesome, but the cuffs need to be smaller

I really like this fleece. I use it all the time. The chest pocket is so convenient. I really like chest pockets in general and find them very useful. It was the chest pocket that actually got me to buy this fleece. One complaint: The cuffs are too baggy. I my hand measures 20 centimeters (size L for gloves). I really wish they had put some kind of small elastic band on the end. It would be so much better if the just did that. (compare its cuffs to Arc'teryx gamma mx and you'll see what I mean--yes, i know the gamma mx is a softshell, but it's a good example of well done cuffs)

Simple jacket

I like the jacket. I own many. The sleeves are narrower than what I am used to in regular fit. And the armhole is higher. I prefer a raglan sleeve rather than a set in sleeve.
