Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket Reviews:

Great waterproof rain coat. Only holds minor flaws

When it comes to Patagonia's 2013 Torrentshell, it's a great rainjacket for average to above average weather. (I'm referring to heavy Minneapolis rain, and seattle downpours with wind) which isn't much compared to some other areas of the world. Now I noticed a small anount of moisture soaking through the fabric but I was exposed for quite some time. It's hard to pick out a flaw in this jacket but two come to mind. Mine biggest complaint is the lack of an inner wallet/cellphone pocket. (Why they removed this is beyond me, the 2012 torrentshell is almost superior). These are valuables that should always stay dry! To compliment what pockets it does have (two hand warmer pockets) they dont come equipped with waterproof zipper seals like the Snowshot jacket has. While these pockets don't experience much action when it comes to water, it would really help give the Torrentshell another level of waterproofing. 4 stars; no inner pocket or zipper seals. Use it for average to heavy rainfall where you will be only exposed for an hour or so at max. I would recommend the Piolet coat for anything beyond that such as the rainforest.

Orange is the best color for rain wear.

I purchased last year's Torrentshell in "orange." I've owned several Rain Shadow jackets, two in navy blue and one in red. I purchased this year's Torrentshell in "orange," so I could dedicate my old jacket solely for mountain biking. The new orange color is even brighter than last year's model, so I'm still using my old orange Torrentshell as my full-time rain/snow/wind shell and the new jacket is an essential piece my cycling gear.
I wanted a waterproof jacket with pit zips for fall through spring mountain biking that would be visible and adhere to safety orange as much as possible. The new styling of the jacket and brighter orange color is terrific. The velcro front closure allows increased ventilation without having it zipped. I really like the fit of the jacket and its strength. The other excellent benefit of bright rain gear is the visibility. This jacket is so bright, it glows. It seldom rains when its sunny and any advantage to being visible when its cloudy or dark (or hunting season) is a bonus!
bobchuck at Patagonia on 02/25/2013

My front-seat opinion is that this jacket fit me a little too baggy for my liking--I bought a LRG and I'm 6'3'' 180lbs. It was a loose in the body, especially the lower body, and the bungees tightened it down, but still a little too baggy.
It did keep my dry in the rain, not downpours, but regular rain. Another criticism I have is that the inside of the jacket was stained by my polyester shirt because of the constant pressure from the backpack shoulder straps on top, jacket in middle, and shirt underneath. Didn't affect performance, but looks nasty.
The wrist velcro straps are helpful for keeping your arms drier and the warmth sealed in. The pit zips are great for trudging uphill. Overall, for the weight and price, this is a solid shell, it'll keep you shielded from the strong winds--even on Mt. Washington--and dry from moderate-strength rain. For downpours or a more athletic fitting jacket, you might consider another.
Me pictured with color DILL on summit of Mt. Washington.

Just what the rain called for!

Just what you know to expect from Patagonia. Great lightweight waterproof/wind proof gear. I wear a medium and it fits me perfect I also think I could have gone up a size for better layering. Pit zips make the flow inside the jacket great (they do have zipper covers) and easy to maintain a consistent body temperature. The hood is made for a fine tuned custom fit, die to the rear head pull and standard hood pulls. Easy to adjust on the fly also. Everything about this jacket was made for on the go, and that is does do very well. The selling point for me was it fitting into its own stow pocket. This can come in handy and that being so you know it is compressible. Not extreamly compressible due to the 2.5 layering system they use but good enough.
Ian at Mountain Gear on 05/05/2013

Good, lightweight jacket.

I had earlier model (original w/ h2no emblem decal instead of sewn) but I left it down at my GF's grill at her apt and never saw again – not too nice folks there I guess. Got this. pros and cons-new ones lighter, but also a different stiffer material-always has odd, rigid shape and makes a lot of noise when you bend or move or anything. The old jacket breathed great when sleeves werent velcro'd at wrist (pretty much had to, they were long). This one doesn't breath as well, but the sleeves are a better length (I have the medium and 33.5" arms) so i don't have to. prob a better trade off in the end as far as I'm concerned. All-in-all great jacket to keep in your car for just in case
Will at Moosejaw on 04/20/2013

Made me an abolute fan of H2NO

This jacket seriously holds it's own in heavy rain and thunderstorms. All rain gear needs pit vents in my opinion and the Torrentshell has them. I thought at first they could be bigger, but after use in storms, I realized bigger would let in water. This jacket has a pretty close, but not restrictive fit. I'm 5'10" and went for the large. It fits well and I can easily wear a base layer and a low bulk fleece layer under it. It breathes surprising well for a rain jacket. Makes an outstanding year round rain coat. Packs tiny and weight is feather light. I keep one in the car and one in the pack. This has become essential gear for me.
Jason at Moosejaw on 01/18/2013

Exceptional Quality and Perfect Fit

Unlike other Patagonia products I have purchased in the past, this jacket is a true to size fit. I am 6'2" and about 195lbs. I purchased the size Large. The Torrentshell is not bulky, the sleeve length is perfect and the overall length is about perfect. Other brands I tried on were either too long in the torso or too bulky. This one was a perfect fit for me. I have worn the jacket in multiple downpours and have kept incredibly dry. Great on a trail and equally as impressive for my city dweller lifestyle. The functionality, ventilation, quality and weight of the jacket is outstanding. I hope to enjoy it as much as I do now for years to come.
Michael at Moosejaw on 11/18/2012

I'm super stoked on the new Torrenshell, the Patagonia design team gave it some nice updates this year, improving on the original Torrentshell greatly. My favorite is the updated storm flap, which is slimmer and lower profile, making it easier to zip and unzip the jacket, while still being totally weather proof. The fabric and fit were also updated for better comfort and performance.
It's a great fully waterproof and windproof jacket, and stuffs into it's own front pocket which is great for travelling, or not taking up a lot of room in a pack or suit case.

Ty Nelson at Backcountry.com on 04/30/2013

Great Value

This is a very good value for a fully waterproof jacket. I have owned mine for 3 years now and its never leaked in the rain. It packs up very small so is nice to bring along in a pack on trips. I snagged it on a rock and it got a small hole in it because its not quite as durable as a 3 layer but is much lighter and easier to carry. Perfect for spring/summer rainstorms. Overall a very good value and fits true to size...not over sized like some of the Patagonia ski coats.
DBGG at Patagonia on 03/16/2013

WOW. Patagonia pricepoint rain jacket.

Patagonia has out done themselves. They have made an affordable rain jacket that looks, performs, and feels better than others in this price range.
I opened up the jacket and compared the taped seam detail to other jackets and the Torrentshell is clean, well constructed and has minimal seams. Most jackets of this 2.5 layer construction delaminate in the collar from body oils and sweat, but they have put a protective microfleece in the collar to protect that from happening. It's a perfect rainjacket and I know I'm getting quality from patagonia.

Neutral Reviews:

Pros and Cons

As a die-hard Patagonia fan it was hard to find flaw with this jacket. Minimalist, good price, looks pretty good. Unfortunately though, it can't quite deliver on the most important variable: it's not truly waterproof. I've had it for a year and a half and I've worn it in all kinds of wetness, but mostly only in the city. In short downpours it performs well but there's a mild clamminess. The real problem is that in sustained wetness it simply doesn't fully block the water. Particularly in wet snow and when wearing a backpack, my shoulders and upper arms get wet, making it difficult to layer with down and less than pleasant with other things. I've looked for seam seal issues and the like and haven't found any -- it seems the water is coming straight through the fabric. I still think the jacket's a pretty good value and performs well in most situations, but I'd be wary of depending on it when you're in the wilderness and expect to be dealing with a lot of moisture. I'd call it highly water repellent (maybe 90%), but not waterproof.
jogodedentro at Patagonia on 03/19/2013

Been caught in several downpours and stayed dry while wearing the Torrentshell. Can get clammy , but the airvents help under each arm. Packs down nicely in it's pocket.
