Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Orange is the best color for rain wear.

I purchased last year's Torrentshell in "orange." I've owned several Rain Shadow jackets, two in navy blue and one in red. I purchased this year's Torrentshell in "orange," so I could dedicate my old jacket solely for mountain biking. The new orange color is even brighter than last year's model, so I'm still using my old orange Torrentshell as my full-time rain/snow/wind shell and the new jacket is an essential piece my cycling gear.
I wanted a waterproof jacket with pit zips for fall through spring mountain biking that would be visible and adhere to safety orange as much as possible. The new styling of the jacket and brighter orange color is terrific. The velcro front closure allows increased ventilation without having it zipped. I really like the fit of the jacket and its strength. The other excellent benefit of bright rain gear is the visibility. This jacket is so bright, it glows. It seldom rains when its sunny and any advantage to being visible when its cloudy or dark (or hunting season) is a bonus!
bobchuck at Patagonia on 02/25/2013

I thought I'd give a review for the non-mountain biking, non-rock climbing, and/or non-hiking constituents looking to purchase a jacket.
As my title suggests I wanted a jacket that kept me dry for more or less everyday activities. This coat does exactly that.
It is comfortable, has a slim profile, and comes in some great colors. Its a great jacket for the time of year when its between 50-70 degrees and you want to stay dry. That being said, the "pit zips" are especially helpful at the top part of that temperature range.
I am yet to figure out how it folds into a bundle but as they say, practice makes perfect.
I will also say that I had to re-order a small as I found the medium to be too big for my 5ft 10in, 175 lbs. frame.
I suggest this to anyone interested in a high quality, comfortable, stylish jacket at a great price.

After six months, I've noticed that I've used it less and less. It's works just as well in town and in the backcountry. It has one large pit zip on each arm, rolls up into it's pocket, and comes in nice bright colors (love ya guys over at patagonia for that). It's sized to work with a baselayer and a R1/R2 at most underneath. It's a solid jacket, but doesn't top the competition in anyway. I can't comment on breathability because I've never actually backpacked in heavy enough rain to warrant a rain jacket so I only wear it in town. But don't expect higher breathability than any other jacket. But it if you like it, simple as that.

BzBrian at Backcountry.com on 10/22/2012

I bought this jacket on for ~$100 on clearance and was impressed with the typical Patagonia quality. The fit was great, with the size L being comfortable on my 195lb 6'1 frame. The reason I returned it was that it didn't seem like twice the jacket as the $50 Stoic that I bought on clearance. The Pata has old-school storm flaps to seal the zippers. The Stoic with sealed zippers however, has very tight underarms requiring me to send the very close fitting L back in for an XL. I noticed the tight fitting arm hole most when driving, with my hands outstretched.

blockwood at Backcountry.com on 10/25/2012

Great Value

This is a very good value for a fully waterproof jacket. I have owned mine for 3 years now and its never leaked in the rain. It packs up very small so is nice to bring along in a pack on trips. I snagged it on a rock and it got a small hole in it because its not quite as durable as a 3 layer but is much lighter and easier to carry. Perfect for spring/summer rainstorms. Overall a very good value and fits true to size...not over sized like some of the Patagonia ski coats.
DBGG at Patagonia on 03/16/2013

This jacket keeps me super dry even in the wettest weather. I would recommend looking into the Parka version. The only difference is that it is longer in the torso. This way, I can sit on wet logs or rocks and still be dry. The only issue is breathability. It's not horrendous by any means, but not as good as Gore-Tex. For the price, this is a great buy! Good pick.
In this picture, I'm using it as a packable wind-shell on the top of Katahdin, the Northern terminus of the AT in Maine.

Thomas Faraday at Backcountry.com on 04/09/2013

WOW. Patagonia pricepoint rain jacket.

Patagonia has out done themselves. They have made an affordable rain jacket that looks, performs, and feels better than others in this price range.
I opened up the jacket and compared the taped seam detail to other jackets and the Torrentshell is clean, well constructed and has minimal seams. Most jackets of this 2.5 layer construction delaminate in the collar from body oils and sweat, but they have put a protective microfleece in the collar to protect that from happening. It's a perfect rainjacket and I know I'm getting quality from patagonia.
The guy who wears a rain jacket. at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 02/02/2010

Perfect jacket for rain or snow.

I got this jacket not knowing much about Patagonia's H2no fabric. Having owned various Patagonia articles and having been pleased with all of them, I trusted that the fabric would perform well. I had high expectations, but the Torrentshell has met and exceeded them. It's ability to shed water is pretty amazing. I wore it as an outer shell (over a Patagonia Cap4 Baselayer and the ArcTeryx Atom LT as a mid layer), during a recent ski trip and it repelled the wetness of falling in the snow (oops!) very well!
Jeff at Moosejaw on 02/04/2013

Going on a hike, climb, fishing, anything outdoors, anything............... Bueller? This jacket packs down super easy into its pocket. Throw it in the pack anytime I'm headed anywhere and if the pack's full, it's clipped to the outside with the built in loop. Great jacket for when that threatening cloud out of nowhere has all of a sudden found you. For how light and small it is, it's a heavy duty enough jacket for most of the unexpected stuff any season except winter would throw at you. Great product.

Benny B at Backcountry.com on 09/17/2012

Great jacket. I'm 6ft 230lbs and the XL fits fine (room for layering). It is light weight and I love the quality. Fully taped seams and thoughtful additions such as Hood-Tuck/Roller system. Does not have any type of internal liner (designed for weight savings) and this jacket will feel a little 'sticky' on the skin if wearing a t-shirt underneath. I think it will do me great on the Colorado Trail this summer!

Yesrod85 at Backcountry.com on 03/01/2013

Negative Reviews:

I realize that if one writes a review that is "too critical" or "too positive" the reader tends to through it out, but I have to say that I bought this Jacket with high hopes and took it to Alaska during the summer. I was sad to see that after steady rain (not even particularly heavy), it soaked through in the shoulders. On a 3 hour hike, it made for a pretty miserable day. Also, the length is a little short for my taste. As a wind breaker, it is fine, but I wouldn't rely on this jacket for rain protection.

alep161195 at Backcountry.com on 11/25/2012

I guess this jacket is good for a light sprinkle but anyhting more and this jacket soaks. I use it while canoe camping in the Southeastern US where it can rain pretty hard. This jacket just dosnt stand up to it.

Sam Hewitt at Backcountry.com on 01/29/2012

This jacket lost all waterproofing in like 4 weeks. Now the water goes right through.

Chris Reid at Backcountry.com on 04/03/2012

Neutral Reviews:

Pros and Cons

As a die-hard Patagonia fan it was hard to find flaw with this jacket. Minimalist, good price, looks pretty good. Unfortunately though, it can't quite deliver on the most important variable: it's not truly waterproof. I've had it for a year and a half and I've worn it in all kinds of wetness, but mostly only in the city. In short downpours it performs well but there's a mild clamminess. The real problem is that in sustained wetness it simply doesn't fully block the water. Particularly in wet snow and when wearing a backpack, my shoulders and upper arms get wet, making it difficult to layer with down and less than pleasant with other things. I've looked for seam seal issues and the like and haven't found any -- it seems the water is coming straight through the fabric. I still think the jacket's a pretty good value and performs well in most situations, but I'd be wary of depending on it when you're in the wilderness and expect to be dealing with a lot of moisture. I'd call it highly water repellent (maybe 90%), but not waterproof.
jogodedentro at Patagonia on 03/19/2013

I had really high hopes for this jacket after reading the reviews. Wore it in Montana in a steady but not heavy rain and felt slight moisture in the shoulders. Decided to give it another chance and have worn it in pretty steady rain, light sprinkles and downpours and it just soaks through into my shoulders, arms, and back. Great looking jacket, but very disappointed in its ability to keep dry.
