Excellent Short + 10 Suggestions
| Rating: | ![]() |
| These boardshorts are excellent overall; however here are 10 suggestions to make them better: Q.) Increase the waist band to 2 1/2" at center back and taper at an angle to 2" at the sides and center front. Add two additional lacing holes to alleviate fabric pull and disperse the tug and tension in front. Eliminate fabric shifting throughout the waistband and prevent waterlogging to occur by securing the center of the waistband with an additional double-needle top-stitch in the center. I have experienced a folding/sliding effect resulting from excess "fabric to fabric" shifting along this panel. The fabric tends to fold inward along the top seam instead of "sitting snug and solid" along the waistline – (don't like saying this: but the waistband should work like a pair of Birdwell’s). R.) Fabric is AWESOME! However, it is not held together with the proper thread. I had a "popping" occur in the center region of the short after 4 months of use. Perhaps using a Nylon Bonded 'E' Thread (same as used for skydiving parachutes and some heavy duty luggage pieces) or at least a UV protective 105 poly core spun thread at 10 SPI (stitches per inch). This will make the seams stronger and more durable. S.) The fit is very good overall, the hem is clean and the seam lines are nice and pleasing to the eye - yet highly functional! Perhaps extend the shaping darts in the rear-end to 4" and make two 2" shaping darts in the front to help make this short "sit" on the body cleaner. T.) What is with these colors (for all styles of board shorts in the line)?? They are extremely boring and bland and not sporty enough (baby blue is not sporty). I understand that Patagonia's simplicity is beautiful in itself and that the brand is "not bound by convention," but please - I want to be seen and standout - provide the shoreliners and beach combers with a spectacle or show. How can anyone make you out from the line up wearing muddy browns, greens and darks?? Sporting surf worldwide should be powerful and bold. Claim your waves like they are your country! Wave your boardshorts like they are your flag! Be the firework or the flame on the face - light em' up and "don't tread on me" and my wave! U.) Crimp the drawstring ends longer by 1/4" V.) Plastic zipper pull and chain. The previous zipper pulls on the boardshorts broke down when exposed too long to the saltwater. Mine got stuck in one spot and could not zip or unzip anymore. W.) Stretch woven or Lycra backing for drawstring closure flap region could be beneficial. 8.) Button hole fly is great and easy to repair. I would even be down keeping the button theme throughout the entire short and take away the zipper entirely (replace with button closure). 9.) The side pocket is good size, but when stuffed full with a wallet, keys and wax - it tends to bulge outward a lot. This is a problem when checking surf on a skateboard because when picking up the skateboard and walking with it, I get holes from rubbing the grip-tape along the fabric where the bulge occurs. Perhaps use a heavier weight nylon ballastics pocket face fabric to prevent abraison and put two drain holes spaced apart instead of one in the center or place the pocket on the rear-end off to the side?? Q0.) Idea: A nylon-rip stop inspired boardshort that folds up like the Light & Variable. Perhaps a 1.3-1.5oz, zero air porosity material that is "pin-hole perforated" to reduce ballooning and has a high tear strength of 4000+ for warp and weft - double lined with self-fabric. Something that stretches a little on the bias, is extremely compactable (folds into self pocket like Houndini Jacket), lightweight (under 2oz) and JUST for surfing. There is nothing like it out there...you could even call them "Para-Shorts!" Keep up the good work Patagonia! | |

best boardshorts IMO | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| having worn boardies from all of the major surf companies, i can say that these are the best i've tried. first off, they are way softer and do not chafe. wash them once and you see a very noticeable difference in softness. the length is perfect as they cover far enough down your leg so wax doesn't chew you up if you're riding a shortboard and they DO NOT bind on your knees as you go to stand as several of the other ones always do. i realize this isn't magic and that it's a length issue, but these are 'right' (for me at least). side pocket with zipper is perfectly functional. loop for key is ideal as well. rinse these boardies in fresh water after use! i rarely wash them and opt for a freshwater soak after surf and then air dry as they get worn quite a lot. had an issue with the metal button (NOT A GOOD IDEA PATA!) corroding and coming off after about 20 surf/rinse/dry sessions. guys at the SM store gave me a new button and my tailor charged me 2 bucks to put it back on so it was no big deal, but the questionable choice of going with a metal button and not sewing a replacement anywhere in the shorts keeps these from being perfect and receiving 5 stars. minor knock. i've surfed/paddled a LOT of days in these and they're the best i've owned ever. buy these if you actually surf/paddle and you will be happy. | |

bionic board shorts | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought a pair of Wavefarer Board Shorts at the Boston store in April. Since then, i've used them literally dozens of times for surfing -- including in the big SSW swell in SoCal in July and during Hurricane Bill on the East Coast. While surfing and camping in California State Parks for two weeks, i practically lived in the shorts. They survived being caked in salt and surf wax, getting sprayed with sparks from a campfire. They also survived daily pig outs at Pedro's Tacos, where they were routinely endured fish taco spills. The Guadalupe Eartnenware pair i ordered rarely showed any signs of salsa or surf wax. Once in a while, i rinse them in fresh water, but they've been indestructible -- with one exception: the button on the fly popped off. But because the "barn door" is pretty limited, i found the button wasn't crucial to the shorts. I also bought a second pair at the Cardiff store. | |

Great Trunks! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I actually purchased these in the dope but now MIA bright Wizard pattern and Patagonia tracked them down in my size from a distant store. I generally like my swim trunks with an internal lining but took a chance on these for a weeklong trip down to Cabo and ended up loving them. The material is soft and didn't chafe even though I wore them 8 hours out of every day. Size-wise, with a 31 waist I sometimes end up a little tight with a 30 or too loose with a 32, but these fit perfectly. They dry out pretty quickly and the zipper pocket & key-loop held room key, ID & some cash without getting bulky. As with most Patagonia products I have purchased, these look good and perform great. | |

Another Great Pair of Trunks from Patagonia
| Rating: | ![]() |
| These trunks work great. The feel of the fabric reminds me of something like an old, lightweight cotton canvas. They are soft and comfortable yet shed water and dry quickly. The seam design/placement works well, no chafing when wearing them around town or going for a workout paddle. The closure system is an improvement over past trunks. The single button fly is easy to work with and lies flat when paddling. The little loop of webbing that helps to hold the drawsting in place is a great addition. I wish all my other pairs of trunks had that feature. The cut is perfect, not too short/tight but not as loose and long as your typical surf trunks. On me, they sit right at about the knee cap. | |

Unbelievable! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| These are the most durable, comfortable, abuse-em, beat-em-up, wad-em-up, last forever shorts I've ever worn. I paddle rivers in canoes, kayaks, and pretty much anything that floats with these, I spend major time in the sun on big water in sea kayaks wearing these, I've beached in these under the blazing Gulf sun for weeks, and they just *keep going*, man. I bought 2 pair of these more than 5 years ago and I have no idea how much time they have been in use but let's just say the people that know me told me they were tired of seeing me in them :-) So I came back here today to order another pair or two in another color. These things are unbelievable! | |

Fit is awesome! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The meshed lined waistband is super plush and fits right on the hips nice and secure , even after dunking a 5 wave set. Zippers are killer for ez acess and doesn't stick to everything or blow out like velcro does, the zip fly is much nicer to lay on too. Key clip works great and there's the option of using the elastic cord for those large plasitc top keys as well. Drawstring occasionally comes undone, but I just double tie it and it's fine. It's cool to finally have a pair of shorts that gets the job done without all the flashy visual bells and whilstles. I'm very pleased and I can't wait to get a few more! | |

Great shorts | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Great shorts. Don't know what else to say - love the fit, very comfortable, really appreciate the zippered pocket, super fast drying, very well built. I'm 5'11" and 170 and the 32s are a great fit (usually I like to wear 34s because I like my shorts a little loose but since I'm going to be active in these I need a tighter fit). The only change that I would suggest to the folks at Patagonia would be to redesign the tying feature. It works well for me but if I was a little thinner I wouldn't be able to get my shorts tight enough to be able to withstand a big wave and not lose them. | |

Dries fast | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I took advantage of end-of-season sales to pick up Wavefarer, Minimalist, and Light & Variable shorts. Apart from paddling the board and using a (plump adult-sized) bodyboard, I like to walk the local beach's swash zone, which of course means getting wet. Better workout, less hot, and more fun than forced marches on pavement. Wavefarer is working nicely. No chafing problems, and the fabric dries out so quickly, it's making me wonder when better rashguards will become available. The length make the shorts acceptable for the supermarket. The super-fast drying means the supermarket's feasible after being in the water. Wavefarer is decidedly heavier fabric than Light & Variable, which is looking a bit better for swimming. | |

Can't take them off! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| Living and working on the water here in Hawaii has me living sun-up to sun-down in my board shorts. The Wavefarer shorts meet my every need for work and play. Having a zipper pocket allows me to spend less time checking on my keys and more time enjoying the scenery. While the quick drying aspect allows me to drive from work to the surf in dry shorts. The draw string holder, as well as, the center button is a great replacement from the standard velcro. It is a safe bet to say that anywhere you find me, from channel crossings to 5 foot days at the Bay, I will be in my Wavefarer Board Shorts. | |

Make sure you try them on first!

| I recently bought my fourth pair of board shorts in as many years... and I had to get all 4 in different sizes! I wish I could say it's because my waistline has changed, but it hasn't. It's always a gamble with Patagonia and their sizing. The designs are great, but I wish they would chose a size standard and stick with it! | |

Why the button fly | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I have three pairs of these shorts that are maybe two years old. What I loved about them was the zipper fly. The current model has changed to a button fly. I wish Patagonia would go back to the zippers. | |

Larger Pockets | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The shorts are comfy and are of good quality. However, the one zipper pocket is small. If you are going to be in the water all the time, then it is ok. I walk/wade in rivers a lot and usually have things in my pockets that I need quick access to. | |
