Superb

My outer layer for the winter used to be the Nano Puff; when I lost it on a flight back to Dallas after climbing in Indian Creek, I decided to purchase the Winter Sun Hoody as a replacement - with a bit more insulation and the touted breathability, I was hopeful that I would have a warmer experience without the ensuring uncomfortableness. I have since been blown away by the value this jacket has represented. I spend a lot of time outdoors climbing, and there's no doubt in my mind that during the hike up to the crag, the breathability makes it possible to keep the jacket on without being uncomfortably warm; it then is a total success at keeping me warm. I also bike to work every day, and the color scheme and windproofness, coupled with the insulation have solidified this as my go-to jacket for cold weather.

Perfect Warmth

The Winter Sun Hoody is a gem. So warm I had to wait for full winter cold to set in. Otherwise I would over heat even on days in the teens. It cuts the terrible wind completely. I chose this item as an all in one coat for Wyoming winter and more specifically bouldering and climbing through the winter. Even on the coldest days I can wear only a t-shirt under it and remove the coat just before climbing. Finish the climb and, put the jacket back on, warming up immediately for the next climb. I've basically been living in this thing. My only suggestion to Patagonia would be to make a down version for a more compressible/packable version and add a few more color options.

Surprisingly Warm, great buy

This jacket is amazing. When I first received it, I thought it was going to be not that warm, considering how thin it is. I was proven wrong when I took this in 0 degree weather, with 45 mph winds. This jacket holds up amazingly well, and I never get too hot with it. Only downside is that the jacket doesn't have anything like pit zips or other ventilation, but that is my only complaint. The windstopper works like a charm, and the hood, oh man the hood. Insulated and able to be adjusted in so many different ways, that it's guaranteed to fit your head. Only other gripe is that the hood is a little small to fit over my ski helmet.

Amazing Jacket

I was a bit skeptical of how warm this jacket would be at first because it is a lot thinner than I imagined a winter coat being, but I have to say it is warmer than any jacket I have ever had. It is super lightweight and the WINDSTOPPER contributes a lot to what makes this jacket so warm. The hood is amazing, too. The primaloft goes all the way up into the hood and can be easily adjusted so that your head stays as toasty as the rest of you. Bottom line, awesome jacket. You won't regret your purchase.

Woaaaaaaaaaaa Patagonia

Just picked up this patagonia for an overall warm, winter coat. I have to say I was skeptical of how warm the coat would be at first because it is super light weight, but it is pretty amazing. Just having it on inside, you start to sweat. You can tell the primaloft technology they use is really great. Seems to be a very durable exterior. I love the interior pocket where you can slip your phone, wallet, ipod, etc. Overall, great buy. You will get your money's worth on this one.

Can't say enough good stuff about this jacket.

I wear this jacket every single day I go to work. I live in Seattle where it could start (and often does) raining at any minute. This jacket is warm, dry, and functional. I literally wear it every single work day and it holds up to the daily abuse. Can't go wrong with this jacket for keeping you dry and warm in a climate like Seattle. I'll miss the jacket when the sun comes out this summer.

My Go To Mountain Jacket

I wore this every single day while guiding on Denali this June. This is the perfect shell for cold weather mountaineering, alpine summits, and a good belay jacket for off season rock climbing. It's a little on the heavy side, the stitching atop the pockets is weak, and it could use a mesh inner pocket for drying gloves. I love the Mango color, it makes me really visible on the mountain.
Snowvey at Patagonia on 07/31/2012

Awesome and warm!

Really nice and warm for those cold days outside. Best part of the jacket is the windstopper shell and insulated hood which makes this perfect for any sort of cold day! Super light and compressible to throw in a pack with all of your other gear too in case you want to pack it in as backup, or need to take it off and pack it out later.
Andrew at Moosejaw on 12/01/2012

I've used this jacket for the past 2 winters as my insulted ski jacket and have been pleased. It's windproof and very warm. It kept me toasty on a January ski trip in Jackson Hole for reference. I have been hesitant to really test its waterproofness since it's not marketed as being waterproofed but the DWR seems to work well in the light rain/snow I've had it in.

Got the 2011 model for christmas this year and I really like it. Blocks wind supurbly, its very warm fro synthetic, a lot lighter than I expected, and looks great. I have not had any major problems with breathability, but i have noticed my wrists start to sweat at the cuffs- not sure if this is just me but overall a fantastic product

Negative Reviews:

Shofshell backward steps.

I use this jacket in the old and free venting 2009 fabric version, and in the Windstopper 2011 version. For me, all the current Patagonia softshell collection is a step backward from the best in the market state of art in softshells tech of the past. I can't understand this "reborn" in the use of Windstopper tech.I Think that the great improvement was all that genealogy of the free venting tech of Esenshell-Krushell-Dimension-Ready Mix and Ascensionist family. In the case of the Winter Sun, the only word that I can say is: true softshell version is a great cold weather belay shell jacket combo. Windstopper version, only a ski resort jacket( or something like that) except for really killer cold conditions.
In any case, both versions are great in terms of design (fit, details, pattern, enviromental consciouses
insulation, etc.).
Five stars for the old version. Two for the WS version from my personal opinion.
rimaye at Patagonia on 10/06/2012

more R & D needed

This jacket is awesome for bucking the wind and keeping you warm, even with air temps at 0 and ripping on sleds all day. If you are looking for a layer that is warmer than the nano puff but less than the DAS buy it. THE ONLY problem I ran into was both pockets ripping out on the zipper stitches. Maybe it was a jacket that made it past QC or maybe Patagonia cut some corners on the pockets, who knows. Its a great jacket for keeping you warm in the wind and cold but its not tough enough for the action sports world.

Neutral Reviews:

Where did the pockets go?

This is my second Winter Sun jacket. The first one I own doesn't have a hood so I bought this one. I love the old one for its versatility, warmths, stylishness, and practical inside and outside pockets on the chest. The only thing that was missing was a hood for the occasional rain shower. I was therefore more than a bid disappointed that I had to "trade in" a hood for two outside chest pockets. In this day and age where everybody carries multiple electronic devices outside pockets are not a luxury, but a necessity. The hooded jacket also doesn't come with a fleece-lined collar that the old model has (keeps your chin and neck from chafing.) Overall, good quality, but some crucial design elements have been omitted.
MADskier at Patagonia on 01/09/2013

nice but a few issues

Quick notes, Runs a touch small. I'm usually a L in Patagonia but had to get the XL. Good insulation weight and overall cut.
2 issues
- Hood drawcords have a decent amount of slack from when you pull to tighten. This is due to the touchpoint system being distanced from where you are actually pulling so there is 5" or so of shock cord that is stretching before being cinched off by the lock. Kinda anoying.
Secondly - VERY minimal internal pockets. Just one tiny one for chapstick or a GU. Need larger internal pockets for drying out liners and stashing a water bottle. This is a real downside about this jacket and something that should be changed.
Elparsones at Patagonia on 05/29/2012

OK kinda

This jacket lacks the large inside storage pockets that wre in my previous jackets. This is a serious drawback, because these pockets are not complicated but they are very useful when shopping.
