But how DURABLE is this piece?
| Rating: | ![]() |
| After 30+ reviews, it is clear that this piece of clothing insulates well and also breathes well...but how durable are the materials? I have put this piece through a pretty rough test (by accident). The (accidental) Test: I was riding my bike across the Michigan Avenue Bridge (Chicago) after a rain storm at approx. 15 mph. My bike slid out from underneath me after I lost traction riding over a wet metal plate on the bridge..I fell on my left side (with most of the impact being on my left elbow) and slid across several feet of concrete. I could only think of two things at this point. (1) how messed up is my bike going to be? and (2) will my bloody elbow be sticking out of the new hole in my shirt? The results: (1) my bike was pretty mangled...and surprisngly (2) THERE WAS NO HOLE IN MY SHIRT SLEEVE! ...whoa. The area of the shirt around my left elbow was definitely scratched up a bit, but I have worn and washed this shirt regularly for the past 2 years since the fall and the material is still intact. Impressive. | |

Near Perfect piece | |

| I live in Patagonia gear; 7/24/365. Except for my boots, everything I wear is Patagonia and no other shirt or top is more frequent on my back than the Cap 3 zip. Having the high neck keeps other layers, like vests and jackets, from getting any of the hair or back of the neck grease on them and it really increases the level of warmth. Being able to vent also makes the top useful over a broader range of temps and activities. There is only one mistake that Patagonia has made and I hope that they are listening: the Patagonia logo is a glued on bit which easily comes off. Sometimes after a single hand wash some of the lettering will loosen and the decal looks very cheap. It was a dorky idea that leaves the top looking like a much less perfect or valuable piece. This is true of other Patagonia pieces which use this glued on logo, like the wonderful Houdini jacket. Please, Patagonia, go back to stitching your name into the shirt. Otherwise this is my single favorite shirt on the planet. | |

Makes me Happy | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
This is one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing i own. The C 3 allows great warmth and protection from cold environments. Recently on a backpacking trip i used as a mid-layer/outer - layer over Capilene 1 T, this was a good combo which served to protect me from the cold but also allowed me to move freely with my pack without getting overheated. I have also worn the "C 3" on colder snowy ventures were once again as a base-layer combo with C 1 crew, Arc'teryx gamma Ar soft-shell jacket, and Theta hard shell it worked great to keep me warm and happy. I have on occasion found the "C 3" to be versatile enough to be worn out around town and on Campus ( Im in college ), i have received several complements on both the way it fits my body and feels. Only complaint is that it will get very stinky after prolonged physical activity. all around good buy will most likely purchase another.

warm....all day long. | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The Cap 3 Zip-Neck is a snug layer and warm as it gets. I use it for a second and third layer all year long and the pocket comes in handy for almost anything you need for quick access. I do however have a comment on one consistent problem with Pata garments: zippers. I have a down sweater and puff vest that have zipper problems, but I continue to wear them as I need them each day in Yellowstone while driving a bombardier These zippers seem way too small and I would rather have a zipper that is bigger and lasts longer. This is not a new thing with your gear and I have had many problems with zippers from all companies including, Simms and cloudveil. When you try to make gear too light wieght it malfunctions. not good when rains or is sub-zero. sorry to be so negative, but since you asked about one piece of gear, I thought I would comment on something else as well. | |

My favorite shirts | |

| I love the Capilene 3 shirts, they are outrageously comfortable and look fantastic. I wear these a lot during the day to work, or under a jacket when going hiking in cooler weather, snowshoeing, etc. I'm 6'3 and in good shape, the Large fit is perfect although if the sleeves were an inch longer I wouldn't complain. Only downside is the [$] price, but they are awesome! I own three and will buy more in the future. If you're curious for comparison the Capilene 2 is a lot lighter, and the fit on the Cap 2's is a lot looser in the same size. The 3 looks very stylish where as the 2 looks a lot more like long underwear. | |

Fits + Feels Great! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought this to serve as a warm base layer. I had originally purchased a Smart Wool brand garment that was very itchy. I'm glad I returned it, this shirt is awesome! Fits like a glove, but not too tight. The zipper guard is a must. SIZING: I typically find the "small" size in sportswear to be too big for me, and I usually wish an extra small was available. NOT the case for this product. I am a small-framed, lean dude and it fits perfect, so if you're a little bigger, you may want to try the medium. I thought the price was a little steep, but honestly, you get what you pay for. Have fun! | |

Favorite Capilene | |

| We've had a mighty chilly autumn, here in beautiful Wisconsin, but the Cap3 has proven to be perfect for trail runs when the temps hover around 40F. It's warm, but breathable; soft but durable. I've been testing out various merino pieces from different manufacturers, but the Cap3 next-to-skin comfort is hard to beat, especially when you compare prices. I'm 5'10" 165lbs and wear Medium Capilene 1 and 2, but I size up to Large in the 3, so that I can layer, as the temps continue to drop...and they will. I like my Cap1s, love my Cap2s, but the 3 is really the sweet spot for Capilene. Perfect in so many ways. | |

capilene fine-tuned | |

| I live in capilene zip t-necks, on their own, or as a base layer under a vest or shell in fall and winter. They are functional and stylish. The venting ability of the zip-neck allows me to control the level of body heat effectively while skiing, hiking, splitting wood, etc. Capilene 2 has been my staple. The addition of capilene 3 and 4 tweeks my ability to match the capilene to the weather conditions. The 3 has just a little more insualting power, without overheating than the 2.All the capilenes keep me warm and dry no matter the level of exertion...Good Stuff!.... Next up....the capilene 4.... | |

Capilene 3 zips are awesome
| Rating: | ![]() |
| These shirts are just awesome, they look great and fit perfect (I'm 6'3 and athletic, wear the large), very stylish and warm for how thin it is. The material and weave feels a lot like a standard Polo shirt but they provide a lot more warmth. I'd wear these everyday if I had more. I aim to buy them on sale since $50 is a bit much, but you won't regret the purchase, Capilene 3 rules. FYI: Capilene 2 is a lot more loose fitting and very thin and not nearly as attractive | |

Warmer Than You Think | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| So warm that on a recent sub zero ice climbing trip I actually took off my fleece intermediate layer because I was getting too warm (Saints be Praised for bivy parkas!). Zip down neck is a plus for venting, plus it's nice and light. It didn't hold too much odor after wearing for six sweaty days on another trip. However, as I wore that as a base layer on the glacier, a lighter color would have been a better pick so as not to soak up all the Sun's warmth. | |

Baggy | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
I am 6'4" 190lbs. I usually wear a large or XL. I ordered a large and to my surprise found it to be quite loose fitting and baggy. Considering that this is a performance base layer I would have expected it to be a closer fit. I do not see how it can "wick moisture fast" if it does not even come into contact with the sweat. There is no elasticity to this product. I do not recommend it as a performance base layer. It may work as a regular clothing item if you like wearing polyester.

Great top | |

I got this for my husband for a base layer for skiing and he loves it. He is 5'11" and about 185, the medium fits perfect. He wears it from early fall until spring for anything outside. The only garment he likes better is anything merino.
